Previous title: So what have you been up to these past 48 hours?

Curious to know how everyone is doing. New month, summer is over.

Yep, my follow up post will be iOS related. For now, want to know what everyone else is up to.

Reserving this space for my iOS related post. Will update in a few hours.

    EDIT:

So, it took me a bit to write this up. Mainy because the past two days for me, I've been catching up on much needed sleep. But let's get to it...

On Saturday, I was pretty much on the go. Stopped at a Tim Hortons after work to finish up the production on a project that was due on Monday. This was a musical project for a JUNO nominee which I did all on my iPad.

Was doing the final production work before I needed to mix/master it. Got some new gears over the past few months (specifically, new shirt (gotta catch them all), Audio Technica headphones.

Later into Saturday evening, I get a reminder about a private event that I was supposed to play for. Turns out, the mayor was coming. So, I set up my mobile music piano gigging rig and played for the entire session using only my iPhone connected to two controllers (specifically, the Arturia Keylab Essentials 49, and the Yamaha MX61). I'll explain my live rig in a later video but here are photos of the event.

RIght after that, I did some work for a local bar, supported a local church, then went all the way downtown to grab media and to support the security staff at Armin Van Buuren's event over at Cabana.

Yep, that guy from Masterclass. Seriously, I really recommend his class. It's one of the better ones on the platform.

Headed back home for the evening. Had to prepare to launch the project on Monday.

Monday came, and had its own drama. Honestly, it deserves its own post because it was one of the most frustrating, yet exhilarating moments where I had to literally drag an artist into the studio to do his own song.

Yeah, I hear you. Been contemplating finishing a college program I started and I’m realizing that they’re doing this hybrid model where the teachers stay home all day, and the lab assistants have to do the job of teachers and lab techs at the same time, all in the name of Co-Op education.

I may still do that course (or at least a similar program).

Edit: Hope the Syntakt treats you well. I’ve never made Techno but I have heard a lot about it. Do you feel the Syntakt is the creative tool or are there apps that evoke the same feeling as the Syntakt?

  • Took my daughter to a classic car show this afternoon, and had a piano lesson this evening.

Yesterday spent half the day trying to get hold of the contractor that is supposed to finish putting a floor in downstairs.

  • Labor Day weekend? Playing Soul Hackers 2 on PC, sitting inside in the AC, eating some good food. Wife paints in our studio/office (work, music, and art) when I game and did some work on a pet portrait for a client.

I took Friday afternoon off and took my wife on a long lunch date before the heat wave hit. We had brunch outside at a cafe in Alamo, CA (Alamo Cafe) and then went for espresso drinks and cookies at an independent shop in Danville. Daughter (youngest - kid number 3) turns 16 tomorrow and we planned a trip to her favorite restaurant but then number 2, also known as “Petri dish” got sick with a cold and fever (negative covid test - we had it at the beginning of the summer when a variant was breaking though vaccines everywhere around here). So we had food delivered instead. She is getting an ice cream cake tomorrow after school.

  • Learned how to use a local installation of the text to art program Stable Diffusion and figured out how to load up the gui.
I'm not very tech savvy when it comes to command line interfaces and Python in general so just being able to figure out how to install everything felt like a victory.
Trying to think of interesting ways to incorporate these cool generated art pictures into my videos on YouTube.

Currently laying on the couch waiting for my ear lobe to heal, looking at scans of old comic books.

Earlier walked around the park, beautiful day. Yesterday was playing around with stable diffusion doing stuff for work. Day befote was playing on Maschine and Endlesss / Samplitude. Noticed my ear was hurting. See line one.

I am staying at Monte Faito till Friday. South of Italy. 🙂

Made a lot of tracks in Drambo in the downtime.

  • The wife and I just bought a new house so all I'm doing now is packing. Not much music being made...

  • Still hard at the coal face of tour visuals, perhaps last day today, maybe not though…

  • Programming Nambu 😁

Was there a few days ago. Exhausting!

  • Cutting the tops off the trees in the back garden, was going to finish the job today but a seriously heavy downpour has put paid to that.

Trying to finish a track. Guitar part, then maybe some strings, then should be ready for mixdown. Then work on possible video.

  • Syntakt i guess is just another tool and personally i find there are apps that cover everything. Drambo with a range Auv3s gets close to elektron boxes but i like the hands on and ease of using the box. I have the ipad and syntakt linked in my octatrack to sample from them both. I’m just happy making music no matter what its on :)

  • Had some Labor Day gigs. Planted some fall vegetables.

  • Alright, I've edited the post from above with a quick summary of what happened. Let's get back to the comments...

That's awesome. Went to a classic car show restaurant when I was in Chicago. Was pretty interesting to see how the times change, yet the culture remains.

But yeah, getting contractors to do work is always a pain. Even when someone assigns me work to do, I give them an extra 4 hours before I plan to be done. That way, when I finish early, I look like a miracle worker :D , but it also gives me extra time to properly do the job incase any problems happen.

Yeah, it's that time of the year. Here's hoping the winning party actually does some positive changes. That's usually all I hope for whenever my party loses.

Sounds like a great time on the weekend, at least the Soul Hackers and art projects.
Yeah, I have a cousin who is allergic to a lot of things. Always a challenge to figure out what to get him for his birthday, but he's a good dude.

Yeah, that sounds awesome. I've been out of the news radar for the past 2-3 months and nowadays I'm seeing a lot of mention on AI generated art. I have to take a look at it soon.

Yeah, Endlesss is so cool. Really like the application. I'm just hoping it doesn't close down like a lot of other apps. The fact they went free is a little bit worrying, not because I don't like it being free, but because a lot of apps first go free, before they completely disappear.

Hope for swift recovery on your ears. Lately I've been using the one ear on/one ear out method that a lot of DJs use. That way, I have another ear to work with if one gets fatigued, haha.

Shoutout to @Ben for the comment.

@lasselu - Yeah,I hear you. Had to help a few friends move last week. End of summer/beginning of fall is always a rough transition. Gotta get out the winter gear, haha.

@Krupa - Hey, have fun, enjoy the moment. When it gets cold, warm up with the memories.

    Hey, when in rome...
Jokes aside, hope you're staying hydrated. Something I've learned this year is to wake up early before the tourists show up to enjoy the sunrise, go to bed in the afternoon when the sun is high, and come out in the late afternoon/early evening just before the sun is setting.

Yeah, the weather has been a bit of a bummer. Have some roof repair that needs to be done. I don't own the place but it's a drag to have water leaking so I gotta fix it.

Awesome. Curious what you use for strings and guitar. I tend to default to Garageband, then Pure Synth Platinum, then Korg Module but I'm wondering if there are any other excellent, yet affordable options?

@muzka Makes sense. Yeah, I can see how Drambo can do a lot of things. I still need to make a few Drambo templates to allow me to work quicker. Else, I'll spend a lot of time recreating the wheel.

Aye, given the overhead with server costs and such I never got too attached to it, even when I was subscribed, feeling it may be gone one day but it seems more actively developed than the vast majority of things on iOS. But yah, not sure how the economics work out but there is some crypto something something about it, but I have no idea really as that world is alien to me. The vst workflow with it is pretty sweet now. The collaborative part was always amazing fun but I could never find meatspace folks I knew who wanted to partake. That would have made a huge difference. So for now I am mainly trying to use it for an overdub phase that goes between writing/mixing where I make a bunch of nicely trimmed sample fodder jams for use in the final mix of Maschine tracks.

For this particular project, the guitar is an old Gretsch archtop that I found for real cheap at a garage sale. I've never used it in a project before. These are the strings I put on it:

Looks like 12s on the E. Apparently "pure nickel" is what they used for strings back in the 50s, early 60s ...suppose have a smooth, warm tone. Who knows?

I've rarely, if ever, had much luck with a ROMpler for guitar. By chance, I happened to try a product called AAS Strum on this project, just because it was something I acquired at some point and was looking for an excuse to use it in a project. It uses object modeling. I got reasonably good results after some effort, but ended up abandoning it and replacing it with real rhythm guitar in this case.

@seonnthaproducer: I live in the south east, the beginning of planting zone 8a. Short winter down here. Lots of vegetables like the leafy greens, beets, carrots, leeks can be planted this month. I planted 2 more rows of ‘dragon tongue’ bush beans and Swiss chard over Labor Day. When COVID hit and I lost all my gigs, I really got interested in growing things. Just had to do something. My gigs are back but I still enjoy growing edibles.

  • @seonnthaproducer "Haven't heard of Nambu until now. How's the app treating you?"

I think it's IceGear's best and now my favourite synth to tinker with on iOS. 🙂👍

I’ll have to check it out. I keep thinking about Drambo, KQ Dixie, and Yamaha FM Essentials for FM Synthesis but I’ll take a look at a few videos.

@Dav - Great to see. I need to research ways to grow vegetables in the winter. I’m thinking of a greenhouse but idk how it’ll work.

@Lady_App_titude - I hear you. Pure Synth and World Piano seems to sound the best for me, but a guitar is usually the best.
