Song Of The Month Club - September 2022

What is the Song of the Month Club?

It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.

The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.

The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow and improve and correct their mistakes.

All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. We like all kinds of music and we are particularly fond of vocals (but of course we still love a great instrumental). If you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.

We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material

And finally, iOS is not a requirement for posting here. If you've recorded your song using nothing but a ukulele and a Fostex 4 track, that's fine.

  • My entry for the month, lyrics in the spoiler:

Out of the shadows love came
    So alive no longer numb
    So alive and overcome
Out of the shadows and pain

    Don’t be so sad
It was the best chance we ever had
The doubting will tear us apart

    If you could see
    There’s something in me
If you could see in my heart

Out of our sorrow love came
    So alive no longer young
So alive and so far gone
Out of our sorrow and pain

    Don’t be so sad
It was the best chance we ever had
The doubting will tear us apart

    If you could see
    There’s something in me
If you could see in my heart

  • Nice track as usual. I like the pad. It sounds similar to the same one you used on I Fell For A Lie.
I feel that you pushed the de-esser a bit too hard, I can hear some unnatural s here and there.

Thanks for listening - and you're right about the de-essing, it was actually done manually by editing the audio in the timeline and I went too far. Luckily the edits are non-destructive (just shaping the envelopes in Auria) so it's easy to fix. If I decide to keep this track I'll revisit the edits.

Maybe you can get better results with FF pro DS. You tracked your vocals with your new Mic?

Yes the last two months have been tracked with the SM7B, definitely much more forgiving with my voice :)

I quite like the control you get with manual intervention on the timeline, that is how I've been de-essing for the last couple of years, I usually do a better job than this :)

I am always scared to mess up with envelope. Is it really non destructive in Auria? I should definitely read in detail the manual, (or ask you, you're the living Auria manual 😉)

Yes it's definitely non-destructive: just split the region and then you can move the envelopes at the start and finish. It's very easy, and also good for volume automation (you can make certain words louder or quieter).

The winter we will go in a small pink wagon
    With blue cushions.
We will be well. A nest of crazy kisses lies
    In each soft corner.

You'll close your eyes so you won't see
    Wail the evening shadows,
    Those snarling monstrosities,
    Of demons and black wolves.

A little kiss, like a crazy spider,
    Runs around your neck

And you will say to me,
You'll say to me, "Look!" and bow your head
And we'll take time to find this beast

    And we'll take time,
    Much, much...

    A thousand years of happiness!
    ...

  • This is a music track that I improvised on two MIDI keyboards connected to an iPad.

I used Bome Network software to send the iPad's MIDI notes to Bitwig Studio running on a desktop PC. There the MIDI was routed to Native Instruments Noire for the piano instrument, as well as Lumina and Lores for the singing voices. I also used two instances of TAL-U-NO-LX and one instance of Alchemy for the background instruments.

After bringing the audio recording into Vegas Pro, I applied the Lurssen Mastering Console plug-in to the audio mix.

    It’s titled Remembrance.

  • This is one of the tracks I made during the summer.

Nice track, has a gentle vibe that I like and your vocals suit the track both in terms of its texture and the heavy reverb. I felt the drums got a bit lost in the mix and could have benefitted from a bit more variation, but a very pleasant listen overall.

Difficult for me to comment with any authority on a French poem set to music, but for what it’s worth, the musical accompaniment works well with the spoken word.

I’m sure this was a lot of fun to make, and it’s an immensely relaxing listen, and well produced. Interesting how you are using iPad alongside desktop PC. Try as I might, I still can’t quite get the results I want purely from iOS as I’ll describe when I post my own track later!

The musical textures are great, as is the piano sound and the acoustic (upright?) bass - interested to know what instruments they are because the sounds are top notch. Listened through a couple of times and the melody is quite memorable too. Good production and well mixed too to my ears.

What a voice! Great throwback song to a previous era. Would liked to know how it was made, were you exclusively iOS?

  • @richardyot first ever contribution to the Song of the Month club…

The main ideas and the recording was done in AUM, using Scaler 2 for the keyboard and bass sounds, and GeoShred for the sax sound. Only bought AUM a few weeks back and despite it’s obvious abilities as a jamming app, I was determined to squeeze it into singer-songwriter territory - 4Pockets multi-track recorder inside AUM helped with this. I did export the stems to my desktop and mixed and mastered in Studio One which is my natural music making home - although I’m pretty sure I could have got similar results in Cubasis 3.

    Thanks for listening!

Good well-crafted song, it's great to hear some vocals as well :)

The vocal performance is excellent, smooth and very clean (I could learn a thing or two from this). And the story as told in the song is engaging, and contrasts with the sunny musical style which belies the sadness in the lyrics.

The arrangement and production are also great - nothing to criticise there. I would probably have liked some slightly edgier or more melancholy sounds in there, but that's just my aesthetic :)

  • @richardyot thanks for listening and the kind feedback. I’ll try to get my finger out and contribute each month 🙂

@martinsa82 That would explain the brilliant sounds then! I use Spectrasonics Trilion when I’m looking for an upright bass. I’ve relied on EZ Keys mainly for my piano sounds, sometimes augmented by Waves Greg Wells Pianocentric.

I like the track, quite simple guitar chordprogression but effective with your vocal melody I think, your voice is special and fits good the music as usual, I like the bridge at 2 min mark

Hypnotic, and beautiful, like the warm sound of the piano, the rich reverb. Nice job!

(I like Bitwig studio alot, but work most time in ableton, the groovepool and fold to scale are features I miss in Bitwig and thats why ableton is my goto daw right now, a combo of the two would be the ultimate daw :))

Nice vocals and vocalmelody! great songwriting and production, only complaint the bass is a bit static to me maybe, agree with earlier comment about interesting contrast in the very happy tune and the sad lyric
