Midi FX by Jorge Arroyo

Just stumbled upon this in the App Store. It’s been out a week.

Midi FX - free with IAP full unlock. Unlock is on 1/2 off introductory pricing at $4.99

I don’t see any connectivity list but it sounds like it has core/virtual midi from the description.

  • It can connect to your iOS synths and hardware via midi.

I just bought it, and left some comments on his YouTube videos. I hope more people engage. For 5$ it’s a good tool. Does it beat, say for instance Drambo for parameter locking and sequencing, probably not.

It’s a good tool and he’s adding more.

I quite like it so far. It’s filling my need to get a MIDIHUB (blokas)

  • is there any AU compatability in the in app purchase?

  • update version 1.1.0

Some great new features for the Sequencer and Arpeggiator modules:

    • You can now select steps while playing both on the Sequencer and Arpeggiator modules, so you can edit steps on the fly while playing
    • Added views for all step parameters on the Sequencer. Switch between: Note, Velocity, Length, Probability, PC, CC and Transport commands
    • Add/Remove/Edit notes/commands on the fly while playing the Sequencer
    • The Arpeggiator supports empty steps now (select the X between the -1 and 0 values), also you can long press on a step to mute it (on all patterns)
    • The Arpeggiator now has a note length parameter (on the settings screen)

    Fixes:

    • The probability parameter on the sequencer wasn't working
    • Fixed some problems with long presses on different modules

unlocked version of the app -same price as the iap in the free version- is available now MIDI FX Pro

  • whoah is this a dream...

  • Do you have this @cazel

Is it good? Do you like it?

  • The pro version is currently at half price at $4.99 Midi FX

  • So it's a modular synth setup? Or am I not seeing the whole picture here?

Modular midi sequencer with chain able splittable signals (some of which have delectable rules) - includes probabilities and program change - among others

And it outputs to internal iOS synths and hardware

    Basic internal sounds

  • I like that one price covers both iOS and desktop usage. Seems worth a flyer for a fiver.

  • Some tutorials online by the dev for those interested:

Seems pretty straightforward and I think the inclusion of graphics is helpful to visualize what is an usually an esoteric and difficult to understand process for people new to MIDI.

  • This is great. Sugarbytes are not porting “Nest” to iOS, and I can see this as the best alternative for the iPad. Bought it already, and I hope for shift registers, multiplexers and an Auv3 plugin version.

  • @Poppadocrock had several crashes today. not stable so far

  • edited October 2022

First app for macOS that I've encountered which claims to require 12.0 to install. I am happily on 11.7. Emailed the dev to ask if there is a coding requirement for this or if he can build for Big Sur as well.

Anyone who goes looking on his website for an email, you won't find it. However it is inside the app in the info screen.

[EDIT:] He got back to me rapidly and said it was an oversight and a new build that will support 11.x releases. I can recommend the supportiveness of the developer. Anyone experiencing crashes or bugs should reach out to him. He seems very willing to work with people to squash them. I also told him we're talking about him here, so maybe he'll make an appearance.

  • Hang on - this is not AUv3?

Not Auv3. Hoping maybe it's on the roadmap.

  • I’ve using it this morning as a way to program my c64 with MSSIAH MIDI thing, nice and simple way to step sequence cc controls…

  • Hi all, George here, developer for MIDI FX...

First, thanks for all the comments. I was made aware of this forum yesterday and had some trouble registering (seems like the anti spam measure works with ANY text except actual names of Audiobus compatible apps...)

MIDI FX was a personal project I started at the beginning of this year, mostly because I needed it for my own Live Hardware based jams. I thought it could be useful for other people and tried to shape it into an app that could be released. So this is basically a one man operation.

I saw about the crashes some have reported and today tried to "break" the app and found a couple of problems which are fixed for the next release which should happen sometime today. Of course, I can't know for sure if that's the same problem as was reported, so I encourage anyone having problems to write me an email (my email address is displayed as a link on the Info screen in the app itself).

As for Audiobus support: That's something I thought a while back but didn't have time to look into it. Now I've got a little more time and I want to investigate it... read the docs and give it a try. I can't promise when it would be ready though.

Last: AUV3. I've never programmed an AUV3 before and am not really sure how I could do that or even if it's possible... Any ideas are welcomed. What would you be interested in? Individual modules as AU Plugins? The whole app?

So, again, thanks and I'll be here reading comments. Any feedback is welcomed, ideas, questions... and especially bugs.

Thanks, I was curious about this one.

  • Welcome @makageorge , nice system you’re developing, more fluidity in editing the sequencer would be ace, and definitely probability on the CC as well as the notes would also be great… it already feels quite comprehensive in many ways, but definitely feels like it could develop into a much more quick to use environment; I think that word fluidity is key - think painting notes and other modulations if possible, but also keeping the really nice granular control if people need to dive that deep (using it to control the c64 is a case in point, many of the cc controls only go up to 16 or 32 and each increment is a vast change; waveform or filter mode for instance)

    Welcome again 🙌

Great to have you hear Jorge! For most iOS users AUv3 is a must as it allows state-saving in apps like AUM and Cubasis. It also allows multiple instances though with this app multiple instances might not be so important. Most people here are doing everything on one device. Some are using their ios device to send midi to hardware or desktop apps but even those ones would likely prefer AUv3. Looks like an interesting app, but yes, making it AUv3 would indeed be a fair bit of work. You could charge for the auv3 version with an iap as @azul3D_Apps did. He's another dev who released his app first as standalone but recently redid it as an auv3 and could maybe give you some tips on how to proceed, if you're up to the challenge! 👍

This is something really easy to add. Expect it in the next update.

think painting notes and other modulations if possible,

Hmm... I could maybe add another view to the Sequencer to display notes and parameters in a more "graphical" way... My intention was to reproduce the workflow of a hardware sequencer, like the ones in Elektron machines... The whole concept of the app was very much hardware oriented...

    Welcome again 🙌

    Thanks!!

I think I'm going to first investigate adding Audiobus support as it seems simpler, then I'll try to get as much information on how to do AU plugins and will see then... This could take a while though...

Nice, all sounds great, and I too love the elektron way; hold a step with one hand and spin a parameter with another, really fluid and instantly accessible, different views are always welcome though, drambo has some great takes on ways to do that…

  • @makageorge i could see that this app could be a host in its own right wherein AU midi apps work with your modules and the resultant midi is sent to say AUM or another DAW running whatever sound modules the composer wishes

So AU HOST could be another other for you.

  • Welcome @makageorge ... I like the energy and enthusiasm you bring to things. Just keep making it a better tool for yourself, and the rest will follow. Simplifies some concepts in a useful modular way that made sense to me and I want to see where you take it.

Could be more interesting for this to host AUs over being available as AUv3, but I have no idea how much work any of that would entail. It all seems like a lot of work to me. lol

  • @makageorge thanks for this app. I would love to see some “turing machine” related modules, for example: A counter module that steps through a configurable range of note, CC or PC messages whenever a message comes in. And a shift register module that shifts incoming messages through a register of adjustable length - maybe with a tap that allows to pick out notes from the middle of the queue.

Yes. Holding a step to change parameters seemed a bit of a difficult manouver in a touchscreen setting and especially on a computer so I went for the “select a step and cycle through all the parameters” way…

Hi all. Just wanted to update you all about my current roadmap with MIDI FX:

Right now I’m both creating new modules that will allow for more ways of algorithmically creating music with the app and integrating AUv3 plugins into the app (so the app is a host). Instruments, audio fx and most importantly midi fx

When I started developing this app the main goal was to create a way to integrate many different MIDI devices in a way that would allow me to create live music more easily and fun, through a hub app that would let me control how midi was sent to external hardware synths from keyboards or sequencer input devices.

What I didn’t realize was that many people would be using internal sounds through AUv3 plugins (I thought Inter app midi would be good enough). That’s why I first want to expand on this.

Later, as I get more familiar with AUv3 I’ll see how it would make the most sense to release an actual plugin with some of the functionality of the main app. It’ll probably be a stripped down version with all the midi related modules but I have yet to investigate this more and get a better understanding of what I’m getting into.

So, for now, the next update will start including the auv3 hosting support.
