Hi all. Just wanted to update you all about my current roadmap with MIDI FX:

So, for now, the next update will start including the auv3 hosting support.

With the promise of auv3, I just bought it. I can't wait to check this out when the new update drops - always cool to see a developer respond to community suggestions/wants/needs.

Hi all. Just wanted to update you all about my current roadmap with MIDI FX:

Right now I’m both creating new modules that will allow for more ways of algorithmically creating music with the app and integrating AUv3 plugins into the app (so the app is a host). Instruments, audio fx and most importantly midi fx

When I started developing this app the main goal was to create a way to integrate many different MIDI devices in a way that would allow me to create live music more easily and fun, through a hub app that would let me control how midi was sent to external hardware synths from keyboards or sequencer input devices.

What I didn’t realice was that many people would be using internal sounds through AUv3 plugins (I thought Inter app midi would be good enough). That’s why I first want to expand on this.

Later, as I get more familiar with AUv3 I’ll see how it would make the most sense to release an actual plugin with some of the functionality of the main app. It’ll probably be a stripped down version with all the midi related modules but I have yet to investigate this more and get a better understanding of what I’m getting into.

So, for now, the next update will start including the auv3 hosting support.

Great dev feedback - this reminds me of the journey piano motifs made, from being a much-loved app despite having minimal connectivity, to having IAA support and finally AUv3 support. In the process it ended up being one of the most viewed threads on the forum, as well as one of the most-loved apps. I’m hoping Midi FX can follow this path, and if it does, I think it will be huge!

  • Hi all,

Just wanted to let you know about the progress integrating AUv3 plugins into MIDI FX:

For now I have Audio Instruments and Audio Effects mostly done. MIDI AUv3 plugins are somewhat undocumented and I'm having lots of problems making them work. I'll keep researching the topic. And last, making some kind of AUv3 version of the app is also quite hard, but I want to look into it eventually.

Right now the app can host audio instruments and effects and you can use all the MIDI processing modules to generate music inside the app which I think is very useful for musicians only using the iPad as a tool. I also want to remind everyone that you can integrate MIDI FX into other apps that support inter app midi connections too.

Lastly, as I say on the video: I'll keep the 50% discount in the price until this update is released (probably in 1-2 weeks). After that it'll go up and stay there. The discount was meant as an incentive for early adopters.

Looking even more interesting now - I've just bought the IAP in anticipation of the update...👍

  • Adding AUv3 hosting to this is a tremendous feature, that will make it a great tool for those of us who work mostly in iOS. I’ve purchased the app, and am very much looking forward to its progress.

  • Nice! Would love to see an option to duplicate a sequencer module with its current settings.

Also, the settings switches to toggle stuff like background audio on and off are reversed from what I’m used to seeing in apps. Made for a slow start until I realized I was shutting options off instead of leaving them on, lol. 🤣🤪

The other devs in the community are helpful. If you were to reach out I’m sure they could point you in the right direction - esp regarding AU

Bram Bros, Fred Anton Corvest, @j_liljedahl perhaps

  • Does this app come with any demos or preset templates?

  • Thanks all!

There are some example sessions which I have to update with the new audio chain, but they don’t show all the modules. I’ll try to add a few more

  • Hi all! The update is almost ready. I’m currently testing trying to make sure there are no loose ends. Here’s a video showing how you can use the new Trigger inputs to make generative music:

    Looks awesome! <3

  • So the update is out... I guess it'll be live in the next few hours. You can read about it here: https://www.makasoft.net/2023/01/08/midi-fx-1-3-out-now-auv3-support/

Please, send me an email if you find any problem. I've only been able to test AUv3 support with a few plugins. I'll try to fix any problems as soon as I can...

  • update 🚨
    v1.3

    • Added support for AUv3 plugins: Audio Effects and Virtual Instruments. Use the app as a complete music generation/production
    • Added audio modules: Audio Fader, Audio Mixer, Audio Meter
    • Adapted old audio instruments for the new audio chain
    • Added module to separate Note ON and OFF messages
    • Added a new Trigger Input to the Sequencer that lets you control when notes are played by sending a message from another module.
    • Lots of small fixes
  • Is AUv3 plugin on the roadmap?

  • It’s something that I have to look into and research but it’s going to take time and I don’t have a lot of free time right now to dedicate to this. Also there seems to be almost no documentation on midi auv3 plugins.

What I plan on doing is: start by learning more about auv3 plugins in general, then develop a few simple plugins and then see how something like my app would fit best as a plugin. So, step by step as time allows. But I can’t promise anything right now…

If the plugin is released with the capability of being a MIDI AUv3 which can be used to build MIDI FX then I'm definitely interested.

Maybe it does this already, but I haven't read up extensively on it ... if not, and MIDI Auv3 is on the roadmap, then it will definitely be on my purchase list.

  • update: v1.3.1

    • Changed how the modules receive MIDI Clock for a 3x boost in performance
    • Added the option to duplicate the currently selected module (just click on a module and it will show in the Add Module Screen)
    • Fixed a small problem where you couldn't drag the Sequencer module from the area of the Select and Copy buttons when they weren't visible
    • Added a new project to the Examples to show the Trigger Input on the Sequencer
    • Fixed some memory problems
  • Just downloaded the free version to try out. Don’t know how I missed this one, seems great.

  • I'm so curious what algorithms you may be wanting to add in the future? I'm really interested to find out more about algorithmically generated music and trying to find an app that will use different methods along these lines.

  • Hi! The thing is I started a new job recently so my time is very limited but eventually I do want to get back to the app. I was exploring how to turn it (or a limited version) into an auv3 plugin and I also wanted to add a module that took a list of commands and fired them when a trigger is received. Kind of a simple program in the module.

Anyway. I do listen to suggestions and if you have any particular one you want just let me know.

    Cheers!

  • could you add 'doubletap to add module' function @makageorge

  • I’ll take note of it. You mean double tap on an empty space and bring up the add module window, right?

yes! it would make macos ux a lot more easier @makageorge

  • MIDI FX 1.4.0 is OUT

It includes a new, fully configurable, Hexagonal Keyboard module. Great on the iPad:

I've updated the app with 2 requests from users that recently wrote me:

    • A "pure" delay module: Delay commands by milliseconds and/or beats. Set a number of repetitions and set whether you want the original note to play or not.
    • The Hexagonal Keyboard now supports negative intervals. You can make it go down in tone as you go up and/or right on the keys.

Edit: BTW, Happy new (and musical) year!
