People that do production (commercial) work with a good income can afford subscription fees, not for people who make music as a hobby. So this kind of payment is not good for an iOS environment. Offcourse there are people who use their iDevice in a professional environment, but what is the market share of these people? Most production studio's use a desktop environment and the software for that ecosystem.
It's the same with people who start photography as a hobby. Would they start out with a subscription of Adobe software (Photoshop, Lightroom), or choose instead for something like Affinity Photo, witch is a one-time payment.

Adobe subscription is on iOS too. I feel the subscription model is fine on iOS because Netflix, Spotify and Amazon Prime proved that a long time ago. $7.99 or 4.99 per month for Sylo is small. The app UX concerns me. I would think the developers would make a slicker onboarding experience that allows new users to use a demo pack without any strings attached.

Affinity Photo is also on iOS. Netflix, Amazone Prime and Spotify are consumer products in the way as cable-TV or a newspaper, where subscriptions for music tools could add up and potentially cost way more on a monthly basis.

If you follow mobilemusicpro’s livestreams you’ll see that several larger developers are orating their stuff over like Scaler 2, Toneboosteds, Eventide etc. it’s a mixed bag .

The silicon integration is pretty benign for most apps. None of the large companies are allowing their stuff to be truly universal with desktop, and the integrations for the few who are, aren't amazing or 1:1 functionality.

Not saying ipads can't be pro, nobody is gonna ask what DAW you used to make a sound or engineer audio, but the silicon thing isn't really a booster for music apps.

On the Sylo point, $7.99 seems high for what it offers if you want the full desktop functionality. I demoed Arcade last month and it was pretty solid with loops, custom sample import, a fully featured multi-timbral sampler with fx, and a ton of instruments included. Not an ad, but if Sylo can't offer that then I'll pay the $2 more a month.

Yeah, Arcade is very well thought out

Are you saying there are additional costs in Sylo besides $7.99 a month? 🤔

…They need a demo pack so new users can try before they buy. Almost pointless to offer a free app and no content to try it with. 🤦‍♂️

So you’re saying if I download this without a subscription and open the app there isn’t a single damned thing I can toy with before subscribing?

    Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeit.

    Nada damn thing!
I’m not sure what kind of marketing strategy this is.

I might be wrong, but that sounds like a violation of the App Store rules.

Probably..though all the anti-app store hysteria from developers and politicians alike will lead to more of this and a gradual decline of quality of the App Store model eventually killing it for most independents.

Lol, that’s tragically funny . .. and straight on point .

  • Yeah, I feel you, the past few weeks have had a fair few releases that I can't get that excited about.
