Soundjoy by bangzero, a wonderful patch for Drambo and a demo of just a little of what it can do…

I’ve recently been really lucky to be a bit of a beta tester for a drambo instrument by @bangzero. He’s just put it up on patch storage and it’s amazing. Can’t gush enough about it.

I would never want to put words into anyone’s mouth, but I see SoundJoy as the perfect 4 track generative ambient machine. I’m sure it could be a whole lot more too! But that’s how I’m playing with it. It’s inspired by ongaku by giorgio Sancristoforo, but adds some great features! It’s kind of like an organic, generative experimental four track groovebox thing!

Both songs are made entirely in drambo using only SoundJoy to control the sounds and a couple of effects auv3s, namely reelbus in the first video, and rymdigare in the second. Generator 2 in the first video is using model d as a sound source.

Hope you like the song. You will definitely like the patch once it’s released, along with one or two other apps/patches it’s changing how I make music on my iPad!

And here’s one I made earlier.

midi in feeds a latching arp on each generator track. so play/sequence chords to select a range of random notes.

What you've done here is nothing short of incredible, man. Thank you immensely for your work and for sharing this with everyone. I'm truly stunned and hugely grateful.

  • @bangzero this is some patch. The default notes in here are just doing it all for me right now. I just like listening to this while I'm hanging out. I know I need to go in and play with it, but what it does out of the box is just lovely the way it is. Appreciating the zen of this moment. Cheers.

  • Looks very promising! I hesitated downloading until a version with documentation is put up, but don’t do that; the included zip file already contains a good text file to get you started.

The sound textures are gorgeous. If is really beautiful. Makes me want to learn Drambo which I already own but always felt so intimidated to drive in. It seems one needs to spend a long time before being able to get results.
Do you think a noob (but with some basics understanding of synthesis) could get the hang of this patch easily or would you recommend first to go through all the existing Drambo tutorials on YouTube before even trying this ?

Hey! Thanks! I’m a bit of a noob with drambo and certainly I have not 100% mastered this patch but I think it’s not so complicated… it’s basically a random midi sequencer attached to 4 very similar synths with effects. I would probably start by deconstructing a simple synth or two to see how everything slots together, but even if you don’t know drambo you can get this going.

If people are interested I’m happy to do a sort of beginners guide by a noob to get started!?

That would be great. Please do it

If you could do this that would be very nice. I know there is plenty of great in depth tutorials on YouTube, but the app is so deep that it is easy to drown with so much information. I sound like a lazy brat who doesn't want to do his homework 😅

  • Ok no worries I’ll do a screen grab style quick and dirty tomorrow evening!

  • thanks for all the kind words folks. most of the credit for soundjoy should really go to Giorgio Sancristoforo for Ongaku and @giku_beepstreet for Drambo. it's the synergy between Ongaku's general framework and Drambo's modularity that makes soundjoy so amazing! for instance, i'm excited about using Drambo's step sequencer & p-locks to vary the random elements over time.

thanks for mentioning this. there are docs. i try to mention everything. it's a bit cryptic at times.

the more you know Drambo, the more you can get out of soundjoy. but you don't need to watch all the tutorials imo. read the brief manual, especially about morphs: https://www.beepstreet.com/drambo-docs/

and maybe start by watching the big walkthrough: https://youtube.com/watch?v=WND26C9qv6E
and the 2.0 quick walkthru: https://youtube.com/watch?v=9jtElknJlgw

    those will get you going.

oh. and a quickstart vid would be great @sevenape!

  • @bangzero thank you so much for sharing your work with the community. Definitely have to dig this app and will definitely download Your patch. It sounds great on the video posted here, and it seems possible to do a lot more.

  • If people are interested I’m happy to do a sort of beginners guide by a noob to get started!?

That would rule, thanks @sevenape . Slow and low, that is the tempo…. 😉

  • Just opened it up. Literally NO idea what the fuck is happening….

It'll be online by this evening (European time)!

  • Thanks immensely in advance @sevenape 🙏

    <3

  • Here it is. I tried to be as concise as possible and there’s stuff I know nothing about, but it should be enough to get anyone started.

It’s unlisted but feel free to share the link if you think it’s interesting or helpful to someone with the patch…

    Also…

Sorry @bangzero I probably made a pigs ear of explaining your synth. I’ll take the vid down if you hate it. It’s really just a rough n ready explanation for people here.

  • Thanks so much, mate!!!

  • If I wanted to use Soundjoy as it’s own instrument rack with other instruments, effects, and whatnot, I should just host Drambo within Drambo?

that works, except you can't use au intrument plugins as sound sources.

  • Oh wow. This is amazing. Thanks @sevenape and @bangzero for endless hours of pure bliss😬

  • hi folks! working on the next release and this fun little autoplayer just sort of happened. :^) enjoy! /dan
