Do you not find that the quality of the sound when connecting headphones to this is subpar? I found with units I used that there was a background hum. Pretty sure they were original units and not knockoffs
absolutely crystal clean sound (both with or without connection to charging adapter)
that hum + your previous experiences of burned usb ports looks like you have really some serious issue with electricity at your home
Ive used one non stop for months, no problems, audio or otherwise, the only annoyance for me is that it continues to draw power even when the iPad screen is asleep with all apps closed.. other than that it was a total winner, Ive given up on the whole midi controller/iPad thing now and just use the touchscreen so I just use the official tag nut but I've not noticed any difference in audio quality or volume.. tbh I think the audio quality over usb compared to the old 3.5 is marginally better but volume wise it feels quieter to me..
I can't rewire the house unfortunately! This hum happened even if I wasn't plugged in though I think, though hard to remember now for sure. What should I buy to prevent the shitty electrics damaging my stuff, if indeed that is the cause?
definitely always use power strip with surge protection, something like this, it should filter out all bad stuff, then in worst case it burns - but it saves your devices connect to it

If you are getting hum issues even if you aren't connected to power adapter, then it looks like some more serious problem .. It may be electromagnetic induction caused by improper grounding but that is hard to solve without experts with proper measuring equipment to identify what exactly causes problems ..
i heard once funny story about house where outside of house, under the ground, were forgotten old copper pipes (used decades before that house was built there for water) - those pipes formed a kind of closed loop around whole house and worked actually like kind of induction coil, causing all kind of electricity issues inside that house (starting with weird noises in radio/tv , ending with light bulbs randomly burn out) - people initially thought it is caused by poltergeist lol, cause it spawned all kinds of very unusual strange phenomenons inside house - but then they found it was actually just electromagnetic induction caused by those old forgotten copper pipes , and when they digged them and removed from the ground, all problems disappeared
Yeah light bulbs get fried in this house easily - will be leaving in a few months anyway 😂, cheers Dendy. It's also possible I misremember the detail about the hum happening while not charging. But I currently have yet another problem where, despite having just had a new USB C port installed on my ipad, my inline mic quality is terrible. There's nothing wrong with either the mic I am using - checked it on another ipad and it works fine, also nothing wrong with my dongle, it's a new one, as is my cable. Both bought in the official apple store 🤷♂️
Thats another strong sign there is something causing strong electromagnetic field fluctuation there .. it may be caused (as i mentioned) by lots of copper (or other electro conductive material) in closed loops (it may be cables in walls, or pipes in walls / under ground) .. Or neighbour having something which eats lot of electricity and sends spikes of voltage back to grid (in that case also other people around would suffer same issues)
good you are leaving that place, in those cases it is very hard to identify what causes problems and often even more hard to fix the issue ..
At the end i may be really some ghost Did you check if there was not old burial place or if there wasn't some mass murder or burned witch in past ?
Hahaha....lucky I'm not the superstitious type, otherwise I might not be getting much sleep tonight lol
any chance you live in this kind of house ?
No, thankfully, but that looks like a place i would have loved hanging out with friends drinking in as a teenager lol
Thunderbolt hubs work too…at least on M2
I use this:

Daisychained to this:

Works great!
Also, if you have screen noise issues… the Ebtech Hum X solves most of them…
Wish someone would just make a sturdy case that the ipad could slide right into that locks firmly into the usbc and has a headphone jack + perks that you could walk around with, hands on both sides without resting your hand on some dumb dongle. They should have just put the usb c where the headphone jack was. Does anyone actually need it in the middle? Le sigh.
I’ve had a lot of hit or miss experiences with hubs too (mostly miss), but I finally decided to splurge on a more premium ($230) hub from Caldigit (4-element hub) for my M1 Pro Mac. It’s been rock solid so far - by far my best experience with any hub.
Definitely plan to get another if I ever get an M1 or later iPad Pro. Running a 8 port USB-A hub off of it, fully utilized for midi and low bandwidth input devices , plus a couple TB and one USB HDD — never breaks a sweat.
so - reading this post and still dont know what to get...
I would like an
is there anything like this ?!
thnx
after some time of using it - i’m still extremely satisfied with Hyperdrive 6-in-1
None of those which just latch onto the iPad (just about) are much use in reality I don’t think. I had one by JoyGeek, which I only bought becaseu it had 3.5mm jack at the time. But it constantly came loose.
I will say that a simple workaround was to mount 2 bits of blu-tac top n bottom of it to keep it attached to the iSlab.
But it looks crap tbh… haha
I don’t know, I still feel that Apple never really gave enough sht about usb-c connectivity … and maybe (hopefully) that’ll change now they’ve been *ahem nudged towards usb-c.
But for now, I’ve gone with an updated version of my (other) previous VAVA unit.
Only upgrade this time being , inclusion of 3.5mm and 60Hz on the HDMI over the 30 on the previous.
But who knows!! It may end up not working at all and I wouldn’t be a bit surprised!
Will let you know when it arrives…

I'm really satisfied with this Digitus DA-70893 hub. I have it for 3-4 months and everything is working as described - audio, plugged MIDI keys (USB-A), audio interface (USB-C), HDMI, charging. It has a removable L bracket and longer plug so you can use it even with an iPad cover. It is for $20 in my country which is a ridiculously good price. I have found only one drawback: I have to unplug it at night because of the LED, it eats battery (15% in 8 hours approx).
German company, assembled in China (no surprise). I'm thinking of buying another one just for backup.

EDIT: Ignore this review, I explained reason here https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/comment/1300295/#Comment_1300295
Something like this but built into a sturdy otterbox case, so you could carry it around, would be great.
@AudioGus Like this one?
Uhhh, thinking something more like... oh wait looks like somebody did make one a couple years ago.
I can't find an actual website that works where you can order it though, so, unless it got re-branded, I think the project may be dead in the water now? But yeah that extends way too far on the side anyway. I find the 11 inch screen a little too big compared to the 9.7 for using while holding. A shame we never got a 9.7 with a headphone jack and the USB-C port. Oh well, ipad had potential.
This looks interesting. USB hub + audio + HDMI + SSD slot.
This is by far the best UsBC hub. The second best is the cheaper version of the same hub.

Do you need a special power supply for these usb-c hubs? All of these small c-hubs come without power supply. What are you using?
@tobi77 Good question.
I have 2 USB-C hubs. First one is simple Belkin 4 port USB-C https://www.belkin.com/uk/usb-c-to-4-port-usb-c-hub/AVC018btBK.html
From specs: "Pass-through charging up to 100W PD, with 85W PD to host** "
I have 3 options for charging: cheap ADATA powerbank, Xiaomi charger (15W) and original Apple charger (15W). And guess which of those three chargers doesn't work through Belkin? Yesss, the original Apple charger
Second hub is Digitus mentioned above and all three of my charges work as expected.
Agreed, detachable cables, like many hubs had prior to USB-C, should be an obvious feature. Didn’t Jakob actually go for this one after creating this video?
Edit: yep, and he is still happy with it:
Nice. Wow @jakoB_haQ you never updated your thread to let the folks here know you struck pay dirt.
It is a fantastic product. I have a few products from the same company and they’re all stellar.
Can it work with an SSD into the iPad also?
The ones I have work great. This one is much cheaper and also works great. 4 USB C ports however it isn’t powered. This isn’t an issue for me because I use Magic Keyboard as a stand which has pass through charging.
Great, thanks! I’ve been researching them lately as a way to use headphones (via usb c adapter), SSD, and a midi controller all at once.
