I've just been trying Touchable Pro with Live (as a long term Logic user). It's stable for me and useful in some ways, but yes, Ableton really need to make a proper remote... and there are a lot of things Apple could improve in theirs. The Studio One remote is quite good for mixing etc., but not for creating... no pattern input or anything like that. When I asked about adding pattern input and some decent UI for plug-in control, I was told I was being too ambitious and that it just wasn't possible... then I look at what iOS apps do and can't believe that a decent UI and pattern input is too ambitious!
With the most recent ableton you can load both drambo and koala on your m1 mac. That’s another way of having a hybrid workflow.
I have tried both, but neither is good without a touch screen. You could use the iPad as an external touch monitor and put the iOS apps on there, but then you need the pencil. No touch.
Sorry for not reading thoroughly through this thread as I had not much audiobus forum time lately but is there no way to use Abelton (desktop daw) as sequencer and the iPad as external „synthbrain“ and just record the iPads synth into a track?
So basically „track 1a“ (midi) sequencing let’s say Animoog-z and „track 1b“ (audio) receiving the audio from the sequenced synth (this way you could also use your favorite fx plugins too from ios
Yes you can do that. IDAM or use another interface but the thing is IDAM is laggy AF and just kills the vibe.
It’s (sadly) better to just separate the two devices and airdrop files as needed.
The point is: Transferring a Drambo project from iOS to desktop is a no-brainer if you have a WiFi network available.

I used one of these: https://reverb.com/p/iconnectivity-iconnect-midi2-plus-multi-host-2x2-midi-interface for a while. Works very well. Plus you get two channels of bidirectional audio.
I totally hadn’t thought of that!
oMG OMg OMG, before this thread I'd never heard of IDAM. This is such a game changer I can't even begin to process it. It's such a game changer that the game crashed. In fact it uninstalled itself and then went through the intarwebs to its developers' office and smacked them around until they let it download all of its own DLC for free, then pumped its way back through cyberspace and reinstalled itself.
Uh... anyway. What's the best way to go about using IDAM? I might not even have to, I got this cool thing that adds an aux in/out via Bluetooth so I can either use headphones or attach a microphone or somesuch to my iPhone. So I could theoretically just plug it into my Aux jack but I'm not sure if i need an interface or something like I would with a guitar,,,?
IDAM is both ways for MIDI, but only one way (iPad => Mac) for audio.
And what to do then? As @mistercharlie said, Drambo is pretty much unusable with a mouse. Recording the tracks into Ableton is not really an advantage over stems. Routing Drambo‘s multi-out into separate Ableton tracks and then mangle them further on would be great but does that work?
I use a 24 touchscreen. While not being the most responsive (way less than iPad, also less than windows), it's very convenient to do all the routings. For playing notes on the screen you'd better have a midi controller controller especially the keyboard and the 16 Drambo track pads.
A touchscreen for Mac? I thought MacOS doesn't support touch. Which touch screen are you using?
BTW, I tried Drambo in Ableton, and yes it basically works running Drambo in a Midi track with 8 outs and then routing them to 8 audio tracks. But the real show-stopper is that I can't resize Drambo's plugin window and the default size is too small. If that would be fixed it could be a feasible approach.
It does not indeed. But you can buy a universal touch driver from UPDD which work svery well, if you accept to cough the 70 USD. Buy hey ! You get supersize Drambo. And I can get rid of my faders
I dabbled around some more and it doesn't crash and had no glitches so far. Another problem apart from the not resizable window is that I couldn't map Drambo parameters to controls of the Ableton plugin wrapper. Impossible to automate or modulate Drambo from Ableton in the normal way.
Hmm, curious on this? Can you share more details and how to get it.
@krassmann
Drambo isn't a dedicated MacOS app, and tbh I'm happy that the developer has allowed installing and running it on MacOS for free if you own the iOS version.
I've mostly used the standalone version so far but I find the option to use a project from the iPad as-is inside Ableton worth a lot already, even if it doesn't support 100% integration.
I tried opening an iPad Drambo project on the Mac, but immediately realized that all (or most of) the AUv3 parts don’t come across.
As for touch, you can run Drambo on the Mac and put it on the iPad via Sidecar or whatever, but that only works with an Apple Pencil.
I wonder if you can drag and drop audio from Drambo’s recorders to Ableton via Universal Control. That would be neat.
Right now I’m looking for a good IAA multitrack recorder on the iPad to use with Drambo, something that syncs, and lets you record loops from Drambo. Probably Loopy Pro would be great here. Edit: Drambo doesn’t do IAA.
@rs2000 you are right that it is already quite useful what is working. A workflow where you don’t actually tweak Drambo in Ableton but just use a project as it had been made on the iPad is already working quite well. Maybe it could also work to control Drambo parameters from outside with CCs.
I also changed my opinion about operating Drambo with a mouse. I find tweaking knobs actually quite okay. The worst problem is solved if I ommit Drambo’s pads and play notes with a Midi controller as @jazzmess proposed.
@krassmann Maybe a MIDI controller with knobs would help with Drambo on the Mac.
i find BM3 works well for this, just be sure to activate background audio in BM3 first.
Yes you can even try it : https://www.touch-base.com/
Could AUM be the solution you seek perhaps?
This should already be possible in both directions as the recorder, flexi-sampler & shot-sampler support drag'n'drop.
While I don't have Live I've been able to drag'n'drop audio in both directions between Logic on the Mac and Drambos Flexi-Sampler running on the M1 iPadPro.
How does it receive Drambo audio if Drambo doesn’t do IAA?
👍 I will test
LOL kind of ironic that all this is why the OP decided to ditch the iPad in the first place.
Uhh wait, I am confused. Drambo is an AUV3 and you can record it. What all is it you want to do now?
🤣 Facts, lol. Then again, this whole decentralised workflow is why I love using the iPad and iPhone for my music. The decentralised iOS workflow vs a centralised Desktop workflow is like comparing apples and oranges. One may not like apples but love oranges and vice versa.
But if Drambo is used as an AU, you can’t use any AUs in Drambo. That’s the problem.
