Best mobile song sketchbook app?
Hello guys
The release of Ableton Note made me think, which app is the king of the (let’s call it) sketchbook apps for song ideas on iPhone and iPad? I was on holidays when Note came out and didn’t have all my apps with me on my device (not enough storage, more video editing and some movies etc) but immediately gave it a spin and had great fun with it in creating a basic song idea.
Now I know there are other apps like this which one could put somewhere between a full DAW and a groove box and therefore I am interested in your opinion which one you prefer for what reason.
I did not include Koala here despite it having a sequencer build in and effects. As it doesn’t come with any samples included to allow for immediate music making.

Koala Sampler and Ampify Groovebox are the ones I tend to pick up when I'm on the iPhone.
Ableton Note triggered my interest initially but I really do wish the Sampler gets some additions taking it closer to a Simpler with slicing and warping, 'trim' before saving the project and loop export without the empty slack at the end...
🔘 Gadget
Oh forgot, I also enjoy using GarageBand on the iPhone...
Groovebox
Medley and Groovebox on the iPhone
+1
Nanostudio 2
Used to be Apple Music Memos, but the fools at Apple discontinued it!
+1 if I’m not using Note
Loopy Pro. I have a template with all my favorite auv3’s and midi controller preloaded, so I just click open and start playing.
Ampify Groovebox if synth based, Ableton Note or Koala for sample based.
All 3 are extremely quick and efficient, with almost no learning curve. I think some of the other suggestions like Gadget and Loopy Pro are excellent as well, but there’s more potential for option/feature paralysis.
Groovebox and Note are pretty much all I use lately.
These days I tend to do most of my own quick and dirty idea sketching in Drambo. Though it’s not what I’d recommend as a sketchbook for someone new to the app. The feature density can be overwhelming to newcomers, but it can also be dead simple and blazing fast to get up and running once familiarized.
My typical sketch workflow is to load an AUV3 drum app (Analog 909, etc) in track one and Zeeon in track 2 — or just load a saved drambo template project with these basics already setup. It’s one of the quickest and most intuitive sequencers I’ve ever used.
Auxy was my go to but it’s subscription (which I didn’t mind) and there’s been minimal updates over the last many months (which I do mind).
Everything else mentioned (especially Gadget and GarageBand) are places where I’ll finish a track so not sure I’d use the term sketch pad.. but yeah those three are/were my primary go to’s on mobile.
NS2, Gadget, Figure, and I'm learning Ableton Note.
If I have an idea of a melodic direction I wish to go in, I will open NS2, load a piano patch in Obsidian, and lay out chords and a melody. (Same in Gadget with Marseille.) If I get stuck on a melody, I usually use a 3-6 note melodic motif and fiddle around with that. (A lot of Classical composers used the technique of melodic motif.)
That said, if my brain is empty and I have no idea what I want to do, then I just putz around with Figure. Note however is quickly starting to become another go-to for when I'm stuck.
I used to like Auxy for formulating ideas, but it's not as quick as just opening Figure and going ham with it.
Koala has sounds
Bottom of the app in text it reads samples
FLSM, SunVox, and now Note
Koala didn't used to come with samples but now it does.
Koala is great for quick perc/drum loops. I sample my voice and stuff around me for making drums/percs/synths.
Korg Gadget is amazing for going from loop to completed song fairly seamlessly. The layering is super simple and sound design is as deep as you want.
Loopy Pro is my favorite by miles and miles - except for Koala which is in a decently close second. I guess Loopy Pro is disqualified because it doesn't come with samples?
Grooverider GR-16 is by far the groovebox I've pushed out the greatest number of and most successful ideas with. I just don't use it much these days for some reason.
Yea they added some in a recent update
Gadget.
Note.
Silly poll - only 4 choices.
KOALA!
100% agree.
Endlesss!
I made a lot of ideas with GR-16 but I replaced it with Drambo 2, it gives me the perfect mix of inmediacy, full control and simplicity.
I've made a lot of music now with Note, at it forces me to make music very differently, so I use them both now.
I agree that Drambo is a great groovebox when used as one. My problem is keeping from getting distracted by all the other things it can do. There's less potential for that with GR-16.
