We'll have to wait and see what the next update brings...
...I've set my expectations at a super low level so I won't get pants about it.
AUM is still the undisputed king when it comes to Audio & Midi routing on iOS and that is an important aspect for many.
Sure AUM is not a 'Traditional DAW' but it's close to perfection for creating stems from noodlejams that I can drag'n'drop straight to the time line in Logic using Universal Control (ie. share Keyboard and Mouse between iPad and Mac).
Even though my M1 iPad has more juice than my MacMini I feel far more productive with Logic on the Mac than trying to practice mental torture on myself with Cubasis on the iPad![:sunglasses: :sunglasses:](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/sunglasses.png)
Cheers!
I totally understand the concept of, creating jams on the iPad in AUM or loopy and transferring them to a desktop DAW of choice. I can see why that workflow would be attractive. But, a lot of people also, just create jams in AUM and that’s where it stays. On iOS I hear an awful lot of awesome jams looping around but not a lot of finished work. If I want to record a piece with an intro, full arrangement through to outro in AUM, with real audio as well as midi, it can be done but it’s monumentally harder than using a traditional DAW. I find transferring the jams from AUM to Cubasis 3 really easy and productive. I also find your frustration with Cubasis 3 difficult to relate to. I’m not saying you’re wrong, simply that I don’t see it. I wonder if this might make an interesting livestream topic. Take an AUM jam, bob it into Cubasis 3, make a finished piece.
I must be a masochist 'cos I really don't mind iOS DAW limitations. Fun to work around perceived problems or just realise that being able to do "complicated scenario A/B/C" doesn't necessarily make your track better. The end listener won't notice or care and only you will get hung up because you couldn't route the audio into another track or whatever...
100% not a dig at any of this forum's tech heads, just my take on things![<3 <3](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/heart.png)
Totally dude. There are far too many people nit picking about what we don’t have instead of celebrating the huge leaps that have been made in recent years. Compare what tech you have on your iPad to what the Beatles, Queen, Zep, Bowie etc had at their disposal. Check how much it cost compared to desktop equivalents. Now smile and go record something amazing.
I try to remind people all the time that top 40 hits were made with an asr-10 and a two track.
Would like to second this. Every update has made the DAW better and better. Nothing is perfect of course as we all still want a tempo/signature track, drum sequencer and a real sampler but as is the case with anything, you can make it work if you try because there's always a way.
I remember very clearly all the complaining about how long it took for version 3 to become stable. I'm not trying to cause drama but any look back through the forums will show that as fact.
Yepp, and the don't forget the classic Roland W30 with barely 512KB or RAM for samples.![:sunglasses: :sunglasses:](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/sunglasses.png)
When I did beta on BM3 way, way back in time I kept thinking about the Roland W30 all the time
BM3 is still my #1 choice for sample based 'stuff' on the iPad regardless of genre. It can do 'anything'.
Something about it just clicks with me.
Yeah to be clear again I am not talking about now - I'm talking about after release - again, any going back through the forum, it's all there on record. Again, I repeat I am not talking about now. So let's not cause any unnecessary drama via misinterpretations
It all boils down to a bit more in-depth audio and midi editing tools and especially when working audio files/events & samples.
(Check the midi editing & arrangement tools in NS2 and sampling capabilities in BM3 or Koala for some ideas).
I get it that for those needing a linear tape style environment without any need to do deeper editing Cubasis works quite well!![:sunglasses: :sunglasses:](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/sunglasses.png)
Maybe that is the prime Cubasis target audience and not über-geeky 'Techno Heads' ?!
Thankfully we do have choices even though they may not always be available for the iPad.
Also worth noting is that my sometimes harsh tone is NOT meant to diss Cubasis but rather lift up points where it can be improved and sometimes the 'mildly annoying' tone is needed to bring up the discussion to a constructive level!
Sometimes I have a pretty hard time to find proper formulations and thus can be miss understood as English is not my main language but enough about that...
I look forward to the next Cubasis updated with 'sensible' expectations...
Cheers!
After that atrocious C3 launch (and still terrible selection/navigation compared to C2) I will never buy a Steinberg product again.
Oh wait, did someone say Sampler track?
Thanks Lars
@LFS I’ve never really had much of a problem with stability and Cubasis 3. I think it’s a great app!
But…I did run into a bug last night…
If you are recording an audio track in loop mode (short, 8 or 16 bar loop) the app will crash after about a minute or so. It can be repeated consistently and It only happens in loop mode.
Thanks for clarifying this @Gavinski!
Best
Lars
Hi @JMmusic, Hi @mtenk,
Are you able to share a simple project with me, where the issue appears (and can be easily reproduced)?
Alongside a few more infos about your environment (CB version, iPad device, iPadOS) would be perfect!
This would be of great help, to allow our engineering further evaluating the problem!
Thanks in advance,
Lars
@LFS : Maybe not Cubasis 4 but 3.5 w mixing time signatures feature would do it for me!
@LFS This is a really nice 'Flashback' to 9+ years back on what Yamaha was up to with their Mobile Music Sequencer!
![](https://img.youtube.com/vi/l0WRyJuaoag/0.jpg)
(Which still has one of the most fully featured and easy to use piano-roll editor I've ever come across on the iPad!).
Considering that Yamaha 'owns' Steinberg it would be nice to see some 'cross-breeding' between the developer teams from both companies...
Imagine we get the FM Essentials (DX100,TX81z etc) , AN1x.app a full XG engine with effects, Phrase Libraries, Chord Tracks etc. all baked-in in Cubasis X?![:sunglasses: :sunglasses:](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/sunglasses.png)
Yeah, I know I can dream, but that is thankfully something that no one can stop me from doing...
Take Care & Stay Safe
@LFS It’s happening exactly as @JMmusic is describing above. I’m on a 2020 IPad Air 4 with iOS 16.1. Cubasis version 3.4.3
Initial launch and the first couple of updates, it was horrendous. I was one of the most vocal critics because I was disappointed having spent money on it and I was worried for Steinberg’s reputation having been a Cubase fanboy for years and a heavy user of Cubasis 2. But for a long time now, every update has been very positive and has made Cubasis 3 in my opinion, easily the leader of the pack for most workflows. In your post you said “every” update so thank you for clarifying that this is not what you meant.
Hi @JMmusic, Hi @mtenk,
Thanks again for your help - greatly appreciated!
Will share the issue with our engineering!
Thanks again,
Lars
Ah OK Jamie, that was sloppy of me, and I know loads of ppl are loving CB3 at the moment 👍
Exactly! I was thinking about this earlier after reading a thread on FB about iOS DAWs, which seemed to be all about what each one can’t do rather than what it can (my impression only!).
I’m reminded of an interview with Brian Eno I read once (a looooooong time ago), where he described going into a studio, looking round at what was there, and thinking something like “we’ve got one of those and one of those, but not one of those, so we won’t be doing … but we can do …”. Essentially, checking out what tools are available and letting the toolbox dictate the process/approach.
Hi @Samu
Hope you're well!
Cubasis and all IAPs are 50% OFF during the Cyber Weeks promo lasting from Nov 14 to Nov 30, 2022!
Hope that helps!
Best,
Lars
Cubasis was almost unusable to me, but I realized these problems were always linked to using AirPods (I know, I know, but they are small and lightweight and the latency doesn’t matter when arranging/mixing). Since I use wires headphones it’s stable.
But the midi editing is just disappointing compared with NS2.
As @LFS mentioned, currently there's a 50% off sale on the app and its IAPs until November 30.
But no word on if there will be an update or not, it's mysterious as usual...
