Cubasis 4? - (fake news)!

  • yeah let's get back to speculating about Cubasis 3.5, no more of that wild 4.0 talk.
Lars has previously mentioned they are working on it, and that issues with bluetooth connectivity were being looked at (I've reverted to a cable), beyond that, anything goes, but bugfixes and better midi / automation editing (at least fix the 'hunt the playhead' game you have to play everytime you edit anything) would be my pick.

  • Hi @belldu,

Please let me have more details regarding the "hunt the playhead' game" topic.

    Thanks
    Lars

Cubasis was almost unusable to me, but I realized these problems were always linked to using AirPods (I know, I know, but they are small and lightweight and the latency doesn’t matter when arranging/mixing). Since I use wires headphones it’s stable.
But the midi editing is just disappointing compared with NS2.

    Hi @Fieberstaub,

Unfortunately, using Bluetooth phones or external devices leads to high latencies, which make these devices unusable for DAW applications (except for mixing or listening tasks).

Nevertheless, we are aware that many users wants to use these devices nonetheless. So pairing/using BT devices with Cubasis will be improved with the next update.

Latency when using Bluetooth remains to be another story, which is fully unrelated to Cubasis...

    Best,
    Lars

I know about the latency and that wasn’t the problem. But I had all kinds of bugs or crashes – like everything suddenly going at half speed – that seem to be linked to the AirPods. Nothing like that happened anymore since using wired headphones.

@LFS I’ve never really had much of a problem with stability and Cubasis 3. I think it’s a great app!

But…I did run into a bug last night…

If you are recording an audio track in loop mode (short, 8 or 16 bar loop) the app will crash after about a minute or so. It can be repeated consistently and It only happens in loop mode.

@Lars I can confirm this as well.
Started new test project, 1 audio track, setup 8 bars in the loop markers. Recorded myself talking and after a minute or two, it crashed.

    Hi @JMmusic, Hi @mtenk,

Are you able to share a simple project with me, where the issue appears (and can be easily reproduced)?

Alongside a few more infos about your environment (CB version, iPad device, iPadOS) would be perfect!

This would be of great help, to allow our engineering further evaluating the problem!

    Thanks in advance,
    Lars

    @Lars I’m on an iPhone SE2020, iOS16.1 latest Cubasis 3 (3.4.3?)
    Simple to reproduce:
    1. Start a new project and add 1 audio track

    1. Start loop record (loop any length, but you can use the new project start default 1 bar)
    2. Run loop record. On my iPhone it crashes at around the 9-10th time through

Just audio clips though. MIDI clip loop recording = no crash

    Hi @JMmusic, Hi @mtenk,

Thanks again for your help - greatly appreciated!
Will share the issue with our engineering!

    Thanks again,
    Lars

Hey @LFS, thanks for passing this along to your team. Keep up the great work and try to tune out the haterzzz 😎

I think he is referring that when you want to edit a midi clip, many times the edit windows is empty. You have to scroll left, right, up ,down to find the midi notes.

    Yes, it’s a recurring problem.

Great! I would certainly use Cubasis for general editing, sample library creation etc. if it supported bluetooth.

  • yes, hunt the playhead and hunt the midi notes are both mini games in Cubasis when opening a "MIDI event group". I DM'ed Lars with some suggestions to resolve, so fingers crossed!

At least there's sale on Cubasis 3 so we'll have to see if we get an update or if it's 'just a sale' for BF :sunglasses:

    Hi @Samu

    Hope you're well!

Cubasis and all IAPs are 50% OFF during the Cyber Weeks promo lasting from Nov 14 to Nov 30, 2022!
    Hope that helps!

    Best,
    Lars

@LFS I already bought everything there is to buy in Cubasis. Give me something new to buy :)

  • @LFS :Any hope for mixing time signatures?

For a $50USD app ($70CDN), there should be more updates.

The last one was 6 months ago.

As @LFS mentioned, currently there's a 50% off sale on the app and its IAPs until November 30.
But no word on if there will be an update or not, it's mysterious as usual...

Actually, the last real update 3.4 was over 9 months ago, and the following few were just bug fixes/tweaks from that release.

And since @LFS mentioned earlier that they're not working on v4, then 3.5 is definitely due soon, imo. Maybe early next year?

To most of us, that’s quite a large outlay in cash, but really - at that price Cubasis 3 is for nothing. When you consider the price of one reverb app or one synth and look what’s included in Cubasis and the investment of time involved. The updates are far apart, but unlike most developers, Steinberg seem to prefer huge updates over lots of little bits and pieces often. When you look what’s included in a Cubasis 3 update - that’s a lot of work. I think it would be better PR to update more often but then, there are plenty of other developers in iOS music who just don’t update, ever. The improvements to Cubasis 3 and extra features have been huge and have cost us nothing.

Yeah, I suppose I just expect a touch more when the product is more expensive. And that's not even counting all of Cubasis' IAPs which total almost double the price of Cubasis itself.

Still, I'm looking forward to v3.5 by early next year, which would equal the longest time between 3.x updates. (not expecting anything this year as I don't expect anyone over there wants to be tweaking and fixing bugs during holiday season)

I have no insider knowledge on this because even though I talk to Lars, he absolutely does not tell me when there will be an update. They work on what they want to get done and when it’s ready, they submit to the App Store. I think it’s a good idea. No deadline.

j_liljedahl publicly mentioned months ago that AUM will get Audio Tracks and Automation!

wait are you serious? like, with timeline?

While @j_liljedahl didn't specify as far as I recall, I would assume it's with a timeline. :) I'm sure he can explain it more here if he so chooses, or at least can confirm what he already said publicly months ago. Cheers.

Yeah, this is so far only big plans inside my head. But the idea is to have an IAP add-on that brings the typical DAW audio editing experience integrated in AUM.

Exciting times! Best of luck on building these new IAP features mate. :) Looking forward to what you come up with.

  • All I need for happiness is AU organization. Right now it's a bit of a mess, I wish I could create folders.

I never even glance at the list of AUs. I habitually just swipe down and type a character or two into the search box. I get to every AU within 3 seconds with no distraction of thinking about sorting, or (if the feature were added) where I put things.

I think he's using something other than Cubasis :sunglasses:

  • Huh. Somehow my brain triggered this as an AUM topic. I guess it was seeing j_liljedahl in the thread a post or two above. Sorry for the confusion.

However the changes/fixes might not make it in v3.5.
