Anyone still use Phasemaker by Bram Bos?

It's a shame it hasn't been updated since 2018. It's probably one of the most CPU-friendly FM synths out there.

  • And it sounds great! Randomizer also gives very melodic results. I love this synth.

Why a shame? It works beautifully as designed. It doesn't need an update. Bram's approach is to invest time up front in designing and implementing so that it is complete and works well and move on to new creations.

  • Bought it today and I'm very impressed with the sounds I'm getting out of it, and I agree the randomization is high quality. Anything from this dev is the highest notch

I suggest you also try NFM. Its sound is closer to the classic DX synths, it has a matrix, and you can use feedback on any operator.

  • Yea, not constantly but I use it, it is lightweight, has a cool patch randomizer, and some really nice bright keys, bells, but also good bases and pads.

I have several more, but it is the only FM synth that finds its way into things. Very user friendly and it just sounds…right.

  • Yes, like all Bram apps, it's fantastic. A great take on 6op fm, an underrated gem.

I use it all the time. It not having been updated isn't an issue. It works great. It doesn't need feature updates. It's "complete" - as in it doesn't need further updates.

PhaseMaker, RuisMaker, RuisMaker FM, Hammerhead ... they all fit that category.

If it's not broken, no need to fix it. It's hard enough for devs to make a bean without them having to constantly upgrade apps for free just to satisfy some user expectation that there should be constant updates. Not to say that some of his apps wouldn't benefit from updates and or even things as simple as a proper user manual - Rozeta Suite being the most obvious example.

Yep like this Phasemaker app is really thought out to make the best use of a modern 2023 iPhone screen.. sure... 🤡

  • Yeah lots of wasted space there. Personally I wouldn't want to make music on a phone, far too small a screen and many apps will be a bad experience, but for sure, I agree fully that that UI is far from optimal for a phone

  • I've slowly migrated to KQ Dixie. Lots of presets, including the generated ones from "thisdx7cartridgedoesnotexist" and the ability to layer different presets help getting more than the typical FM sounds out of it.
I still like Phasemaker's macro knobs though.
For FM sound design, NFM is still my top pick. Simple, straightforward and free routing between operators!
    No iPhone version though.

  • Bram is not only a great dev is also a to0´GUI designer with is very scarce on the market.

The UI was made in 2016, when Jobs was still alive and there was only a single (or maybe 2?) screen dimension for the phone. This code is so old and different from what I'm using today that it would be a pain to touch it again.

I'm afraid Phasemaker is (and will remain) what it is :)

    Fine with me!

I don't know why anyone would use it standalone like the person saying it wastes space on the iPhone anyway. It works great even on my tiny iPhone 7.

  • I think this is the only FM synth available on the iPhone with family sharing. As my daughter is pretty obsessed with FM it’d be cheaper for me to buy this rather than buy her her own copy of KQ Dixie or Omega

  • I still use it. Just gets me there quick.

  • Yes, I like it so much that I forget it’s FM.

Funny you say that… FM is my favorite form of synthesis… I feel the way others do about subtractive… it’s just much easier for me to program (which I realize makes me an oddity lol)

It rubbed off on my daughter. When I was in the throes of my addiction I once pawned her Nintendo Switch to buy drugs in a moment that brings me great shame . I’ve since made amends and recently I asked her if she wanted another one. She said yeah but if I could she’d rather have a Yamaha reface DX … that’s my girl 😂

  • She is a great daughter!

Nambu is on iPhone and also has family sharing. Probably going on sale soon too. I believe all IceWorks synths have family sharing.

  • Phasemaker is ace.

  • I have every Bram app and basically every FM synth app…except this one 😂 the demos all sound great though, and I’m sure it’s of the same quality as his other apps. I just don’t need anymore FM synths.

Yep. And if you use the zoom, you can easily make it fit your iPhone screen.

Holy crap.. I OWN Nambu and use it all day the time but forgot about it 😂

  • Korg Gadget's Chiang Mai, while simple, is also worth checking out because it has a very high modulation intensity or richness with little aliasing. Aparillo and Omega are also interesting.

  • True! I have Gadget projects with a lot of Chiangmais layered, a fun and easy to use little FM synth.

It's one of the very few from BraBos I didn't have.

FM is one of my least favourite synth architectures (I blame the DX7 and the sounds of which were slathered all over so many of the songs of the 80s I liked the least I think -- especially that godawful electric piano!) however I one of my first ever synths was the Yamaha FB-01 4 operator thingy. I don't think I ever got it onto a finished track though!

I think I still have the FB-01 in the loft. If it still works I'm going to have to try and use it on a track in 2024 LOL

I might even discover a liking for FM. I love Casio's PD version of (kind of) FM so it's not all bad. Also I love Ruismaker FM. FM percussion is lovely.

TLDR: Bought. Note to self. FM isn't all DX7 electric pianos and horrible late 80s ballads.

If I made a pack of Brian Eno Oblique Strategy style cards for myslef to help me when I'm stuck, I think I'd add "make a tune in Logic on the iPad using only BramBos instruments."

I am not aware of any App that drops out of family sharing.
    Do you have an example?

Quite a few apps don’t allow family sharing, such as the aforementioned KQ Dixie and Bleass Omega
