Why, IK Multimedia? Why?
I bought an IK Multimedia BlueBoard midi pedalboard yesterday. I wanted it right now so I paid $20 more for it at my local Guitar Center than I would have paid online. I set it up, downloaded the app from the app store and launched Tonestack. I haven't done anything with a midi controller before so I thought I'd check out BlueBoard's user manual first. It's not a paper printed document. It's part of the app's help menu. So I click on the user guide link and... it prompts me to register the app before I can see the user guide. I think "Well, this is stupid" and try to see if I can bypass the registration process because all I want to do is read the user guide. I'll register later. Nope. Can't do it. It's forcing me to register the product before it allows me to read the user guide. Who the FUCK does that and why?
So I start the registration process. I already have an IK Multimedia account. I don't use this iPad to access anything that needs a password other than the Apple store so I don't have a password manager on it. I manage all of my online accounts on my desktop pc using the LastPass password manager. After this year's Heartbleed virus, I made all of my passwords as secure as possible. My IK Multimedia password was 32 digits of random characters. I am NOT happy at this point and start typing all these freakin' characters into the password field on the iPad and get an invalid password message. I'm even less happy now and start typing them in again, paying strict attention to each keystroke and guess what? The app's password field is too small to accept all of the characters of my IK Multimedia password! Arrrrggghh!!! I now have to go through the process of having IK change my password to something that fits in the app's password field. They send me a password that's six all numeric digits. So much for having a very secure password any more. So after all that, I finally got to read the damn user guide.
I am not an IK Multimedia basher. I've bought a lot of their stuff both on the pc and iOS. They make some really good products. Their self promotion prompts on their iOS products never bothered me that much. But this! This pissed me the fuck off to no end. I waited 12 hours to post this or it would have been nothing but curse words as opposed to the few that I've included. I ask again, who the FUCK ties the reading of the user guide to a mandatory registration process and why? This was an unreasonably difficult process just to read the fucking user guide!!!!! The fucking user guide!!!! And then I didn't really need to read it after all because the midi setup process in Tonestack was pretty easy to figure out using THEIR help system.

I love much of IK Muktimedia's line—I really do—but their marketing approach is obnoxious at best.
To answer the question (why) my guess is that despite the fact that it pisses most of us off to no end, their numbers show they have better sales with their mandatory marketing machine turned on.

I know an IK person posts in this forum sometimes. I hope he can find out who is responsible for forcing registration before the user guide is available and punch him in the dick for me.
To IK's credit, the BlueBoard works well. I like it.
The inconsiderate approach of devs like IK and Retronyms seriously motivates me to find other solutions. I don't wish to bash, just don't wish to support companies that place profits, marketing plans, etc. above user experience and relationships.
Let's face it the name of the game is marketing and selling products. Making money that's what it is. I do not like the marketing approach of IK but the do make some good products.

IK has done some good things: AB, virtual midi, changing policy of pop-ups. Retronyms doesn't seem to know what you mean when you say that their apps don't work properly; with their sales figures how could they? SensorTower estimates the app worth of iMPC Pro at almost $3 million; Beatmaker 2: under $850 K. iMPC Pro alone exceeds the estimated value of BM2, Samplr, NanoStudio, Sunrizer and Auria all combined. Don't know how credible the source but... sheesh. How could they make changes to such a winning formula?
IK has done many good things for iOS music and has been more or less responsive to the wishes of customers I think.

I encountered the exact same issue yesterday. I was trying to register some IK apps and it wouldn't work. I was copying and pasting them from a password manager though so it wasn't immediately obvious to me that it was the length that was the problem. Eventually I realized my 50 character password had to be changed. Not that big of a deal. I just made a new one that is shorter, you don't have to use their 6-digit code or whatever they sent you. They should foresee an issue like that though obviously.

Maybe if they paid their employees cash instead of forcing them to scrounge for food, IK's customer service and marketing wouldn't have such a crappy reputation...
I actually prefer a roast pork with broccoli rabe sandwich but it doesn't work as well as a username.
