Song Of The Month Club - December 2022

What is the Song of the Month Club?

It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.

The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.

The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow and improve and correct their mistakes.

All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. We like all kinds of music and we are particularly fond of vocals (but of course we still love a great instrumental). If you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.

We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material

And finally, iOS is not a requirement for posting here. If you've recorded your song using nothing but a ukulele and a Fostex 4 track, that's fine.

  • My entry for the month, lyrics in the spoiler:

    Walking through your gilded palace
    Searching through your marbled halls
Looking for a glimpse of solace
But comfort never heeds your calls

    We’ll walk into the waves
The tide will wash us both away
I’ll walk into the waves with you dear

And we will count the days
The dwindling days that drift away
And we will count the days without fear

    We’ll walk into the waves
The tide will wash us both away
I’ll walk into the waves with you dear

Listened through a couple of times now - I like this! The lyrics are skilfully written and the theme reminded me of The Smiths song "There is a light that never goes out". Your song has a relaxed vibe going on which draws you in. Production is good - listening through headphones I felt it could have benefited with a bit more use of the stereo field - I'd probably have used a touch of Infected Mushroom's Wider on the master track just to open it out a little. Good song!

Thanks for listening and for commenting. I love that Smiths song so more than happy for the comparison (and yes I guess the lyrics are on a similar theme, although Morrissey'sare far cleverer than mine).

  • This is a music track that I improvised on two MIDI keyboards connected to an iPad.

I used Bome Network software to send the iPad's MIDI notes to Bitwig Studio running on a desktop PC. There the MIDI was routed to Noire for the piano, as well as Omnisphere, Augmented Voices, Lumina, Lores, and Vocalise for the background instruments. I also used Bitwig's Spectral Suite as an audio effect for the piano.

After bringing the audio recording into Vegas Pro, I applied the Lurssen Mastering Console plug-in to the audio mix.

    It's titled Radius.

Collaboration is great fun isn’t it? I do something similar by truly collaborating with my graphic designer with my physical albums - we really try to get the images reflecting the musical content. There’s something about music and art as complementary bedfellows. The imagery in the video is stunning. I’m probably not best qualified to comment in a meaningful way on the music as it is so far from what I produce myself, but it was still a lovely 3 minute experience 🙂

  • This was my project this afternoon, so its as fresh as can be 😀
A bit more chill than my usual stuff.

Thoroughly professional sounding ambient piece to my ears (again, I’m no expert in this genre, so forgive my lack of detailed insight!) You’ve obviously taken great care to produce a lovely piece of music. As an irrelevant aside, I use Omnisphere myself a lot and it is one of best value purchases I ever made, years ago.

This is a bit softer, as always great songwriting and great text, I like it, I think its among one of my favourites of yours, cant really tell why that is, but I think its as a whole is a very solid song and keeps my interest very well both musicwise and text. great job! wish I could write text like that!

  • Loved the guitar playing @BillS . Felt a bit Jethro Tullish at about 1:20 and 2:30 (Thick as a Brick if you know it?). Great ending as well.

Thanks so much. It just so happens Ian Anderson is my all time musical hero. I’ve seen Tull live literally scores of times over the years. I never consciously try to bring their influence into my songs but the comparisons have been made many times - I’m always surprised, but I have to admit I must be guilty as charged!! Cheers again, really appreciate the comments.

A bit more chill than my usual stuff.

A masterclass in taking a simple but evocative theme and developing it over the course of a track. The main part is hooky and memorable and carries the track really well.

  • Very slick production, with a great mix and a very well-thought-out arrangement. The guitar playing is outstanding, and really embellishes the track, and the vocals are super-clean and smooth. The chorus is great, very enjoyable and catchy. Great song.

Beautiful musical textures, and a lovely theme running through it. I’ve listened twice through and it gets better each time. A lovely piece.

A very minimalist piece with some interesting and unusual textures, and the sparse harmonic and melodic content create a very unusual experimental vibe.

The visuals are really hypnotic, and I enjoyed them, but then I listened again without paying any attention to the animation and the music gave me a completely different feeling once I heard it on its own.

Very nice ambient work, the vocal pads in particular are very beautiful, and the music is enjoyable and relaxing. There is a lot of space in this track which really helps to give it that calming atmosphere, and the sparse notes are well chosen.

  • I nearly missed your piece @martinsa82 … I’m glad I didn’t… it was beautiful !

Still amazed at the lyrics and the music is growing on me compared to my previous listens few weeks ago. I especially like what is happening around 2:09. The pad fits incredibly well (both notes and timbre). It is one of your most beautiful lyrics, Richard !

Love both music and visual, and agree with @richardyot, the music sends different vibes with our without the visual. C'est très beau !

David, it sounds great as usual. I feel guilty not to find new words. But it's great. Thank you for sharing !

  • Here’s mine for December - wintry theme but definitely not a Christmas song !

All created within GarageBand IOS (apart from the vocals, within cakewalk / emvoice )with no external controllers

Really beautiful piece ! It reminds me a bit of the atmosphere heard on Nils Frahm or Olafur Arnalds works. Great job. Thank you for sharing!

  • Songwriting, performances and production are all very good. Great job.

My entry for this month is a collaboration with @LinearLineman, who recently shared one of his improvisations which immediately inspired me some lyrics. It is the first time to write something like this and in this style but the lyrics came to me so quickly that I had to try to sing them despite my vocals limitations. Full of imperfections (including my cat's meowing and purring !)

    Lyrics in the spoiler

    When she smiles
    She can spread the colours
    Of a thousand rainbows
    Over stormy weather
    Yes you'll see her
    From afar

    When she smiles
    She can break the wall
    That's tearing us apart
    Light up the Northern Star
And guide us through the dark

    When she smiles
    She can bend
The laws of space and time
    With a pantomime
    Make the old younger
    With a laughter
    Turn a lonely winter
    To a feast of Everlasting
    Sweet neverending summer
    Oh dear, you'll know
    When you'll see her
    Glow in the dark
    With a laughter

    With her smile
You'll end up naked as you came
And it won't take much longer
    For you to surrender
    Yes she's much stronger
    With her laughter
