Grumpy man hates modular. I think he has a point though…

  • The important factor I feel has been overlooked thus far in the conversation is that this year, I won’t need to waste money on Xmas lights. I can just turn the modular on.

I have no problems at all with what this man says in the video.
Also, I see nothing were he would be wrong.

    He is wrong:
that Rebirth patch didn‘t even sound remotely like the modular patch
it did not take $16k to make „that sound“, only a few modules were engaged
    not mentioned:
all sounds were tracked by (probably) cam/smartphone mics (except the Rebirth example ;) )
direct recordings would deliver a very different sound, let alone as multichannel mixes, an important aspect of modular synths.

But of course the creator of the video is free to express his personal opinion.
Unfortunately he turns it into a general accusation, supported by nothing but fake arguments.

Real savings in the long run! Maybe I can convince my wife

  • Roll up, roll up, for your 'The People Against Modular Synthesis' t-shirt. This guy is a 5-star troll, but a funny one, albeit this is a bit lame compared to his main anti modular vid. I predict he'll have 1k subs within a few days lol

    There's hope yet!

  • What about the environmental damage from making all these so-called "modules"?

This modular movement is nothing more than a capitalist plot to sell you more crap that you don't need. Forget high heels and handbag unboxings - this is worse. It's Kardashian noise making - think of all the wires, knobs, electronics, metal, plastic you buy to make a few buzzy noises.

Environmental disaster! Think of the children!

    Beardist.

  • YouTube also recommended to me last night. I found it funny. Is this synth populism?

  • This guy is a bit of a cross between Graham Linehan (the crusader) and Jack Black (the playing the nerd thing, though much less funny) - I've watched a couple of his vids now and they're a very mixed bag. And I don't know if the voice he uses is just his voice or sometimes an intentional (not very good) Trump parody, but Nic Cage definitely does it better in "The Colour Out of Space" lol. The one @sevenape posted was hilarious, but I'm gonna have to watch another few before I make up my mind on whether this guy really has mojo or not 😝

  • The problem here is not the modular or Eurorack.

The problem here is that this “Bobeats” has nothing to do regarding music.

One can have a Stradivarius and play like a screaming cat.

  • I love it! “Modular is stuuuupid.”
And yes, in many ways it is. I think it is healthy to take an alternative look at some of the stuff we do. Does it really mean that much to you to have a €15K fart sound machine?
And this guy just goes all the way with childish bravado and even some bullying and other irrelevancies.
It is over the top and very dumb, but somehow, as a whole, I think we deserve it.
So much money spent on so little… (Yeah, I do get it, those fart sounds made you happy, but still…😊)

(And yes, I have a eurorack system myself.)

  • Watched a few more. One hit wonder, sadly

Haha. A few years ago I grew a huge beard — it just kind of happened, and it was pretty impressive. Then sometime in the middle of the pandemic I ventured out to a Guided by Voices concert in Brooklyn. I looked around the room and thought, holy shit that's a lot of beards. Shaved the next day.

  • This popped up in my YT feed today, and was an instant “do not recommend this channel”. Nope, I haven’t watched it, nope, I’m not going to. Better things to do with my time (eg playing with Fluss).

Choice of instruments is a personal thing. Some suit some people, others don’t. It’s not some flipping holy war.

Modular doesn’t necessarily equate to ginormous systems, small systems force creativity. Hence I love working with my Moog semi-modulars, but I also love working with my iPad. Separately or together.

    YMMV.

  • Choice of instruments is a personal thing

In general yes but I think it's relevant to consider the 'influencer' aspect of YT modulars. There's lots of people looking to YT for information and inspiration, so you do need a counterpoint to the enthusiasm/sell on big expensive modular systems to remind people that you can get these things if you have money to spare but you don't need them to have fun and make music. And if you do go the modular route you don't need a big system (I hugely enjoyed seeing Thom Yorke perform with a small system in a case).

  • @Telefunky The point wasn’t to exactly replicate the patch. He was literally making fun of the fact that modular is supposed to make cool interesting sounds, yet it’s really tame compared to fiddling around with an iPad.

At least that’s what I got from the video. If the point was to create the sound, he could literally sample it. But realistically, there’s no point. There’s too many ways to create sound and while one can get the sound, how one uses that sound is completely up to the person.

  • I think this guy watches YT videos for some perverse reason. I’m not a Andrew Wang fan but I do like the occasional modular setup and tear down timed challenge. If I don’t like what I’m watching I flick somewhere else. I get the feeling this guy feels compelled to watch to the end and then is angry that the person has wasted his time with a stupid thing.

He needs to stop watching things that annoy him and try and have some fun creating.

Ov course he’s correct but he’s not much fun.

Of course there was no intention to replicate the patch, but it‘s lame style to pick the worst example you can find and declare it as a general feature of all such systems.
I have no idea about the owner of the $16k modular... if he has and makes fun out it, so be it.
But the generalization reminds me at politics (in the worst possible way) o:)

  • This guy is super annoying. He’s right but what does it matter…

The best modular “performances” I have seen are with very small systems.

Look, this guy is using Bo and Huang as a broad brush for all Modular-Heads. Huang makes good music but using Bo to measure is a massive injustice. The guy is a fvcking cornball and possibly has a search-bot for his name where he can tweet screenshots of posts like this [really won't be surprised if he does it here... again].
This grumpy guy is almost as annoying as Bo.

Let ppl enjoy things; let folks talk about their $18k wall of Christmas tree lights... I mean modules to just make fart noises, and let folks talk about their endless list of pretend-instruments... I mean apps that emulate vintage gear and imagine they were back in their shitty band from the 80s again.

I willingly adopt the ‘China doll and train set’ mantle.

I’m very clear that often a module is basically an iPad app that costs ten times, sometimes 100 times as much and yet does the same, or less. I’m also aware that save for a few gifted individuals, eg MylarMelodies, few can actually use their setups live with the facility of a standard synth to produce fully rounded music. But I find it a different experience. If I want a finished piece of music (or at least the noises I make which pass for music) 95% of the time apps inside AUM are my fast, cheap, and satisfying route to that.

If I want to, literally, ‘play’ with sound, though, to experiment and surprise myself, and to engage in the work mediation that is sitting with a fistful of cables and tweaking a knob here or there, then, as a non musician who literally can’t play my keyboards and guitars, only the modular allows me to both make noises which I find pleasing and intriguing and surprising, and also interact with them in ways which very few apps permit (Fluss being a most recent noble exception), which in turn may or may not actually be useful if dragged into AUM for more work. Process not outcome, the journey not the destination, and other Hallmark greeting card observations. And that is fine.

    Also: flashing lights!

After all, a retired chick can only play so many computer games in the course of a day, you know! ;)

Also also: I was in a band in the 80s. Maybe you heard of us? Crème Brûlée? Here, I’ve got a cassette in the car. I’ll sign it for you if you like.

Same for me. Google knows better what I like to watch than me. It was on the very top of my home page. Who else? I guess the Google AI thinks that ABF member like rants about modular - not too stupid. I found it funny, too. I love the Devo hat of his avatar. Anyway, I think he should have taken miRack instead of Rebirth.

  • edited December 2022

Ha ha that Crème Brûlée clip cracks me up everytime, it’s the essence of so many old guys I’ve met over the years in music shops and gigs etc.

As for modular/euro rack to me it seems to be the longest and most expensive route to get to Your destination, however I will admit having looked at the occasional module and gotten slight G.A.S. but then reality kicks in and I know I’d get lost in a nest of wires.
Like many things in life it’s simply horses for courses.

Wear it with pride, sister. Lol

    >

But that's not true. There are loooooaaaaads of Eurorack musicians who play live eurorack - PanicGirl, JakoJako, Helene Vogelsinger, Julia Bondar, Colin Benders... are just a few I can impulsively rattle off that are more popular than the other random finds on my IG.

That's 1000% true. That meditative session where time no longer exists, meandering through a forest of sounds is most delightful.

    Also: flashing lights!

    Also, guilty as charged

    LOL

  • If you're using a modular to create music that you could have just created with a VST or a standard synth, that's silly obviously. But, that explains nobody I know that uses modular. They are creating things that would have never been created with other tools. And not farts or blips or bloops. Sounds from a modular synth are as capable of beauty as any other instrument in the right hands - and it can lead you in much different directions than standard synths, which are effectively pre-patched or limited-patching modulars, often with the same old boring "modules" and fixed or limited ways to inter-connect them (especially long chains of connections and parallel processing). I love modular (but have no interest in watching clickbait videos and, although I think they are interesting, I've gotten along with virtual modular as much as I've gotten along with on-screen keyboards)

this whole topic is kinda funny - grown men are arguing how much $ is too much and which gear aquisition is ridiculous cause you can do same with more cheap gear or SW (absolute top of ridiculousity is one youtube channel where this is literally what guy on this channel is doing - showing how all people are super dumb when they buy HW cause you can get same result from freeware apps)

Most people are missing point - it's not result, it's the process which motivates lot of home hobby musicians invest hard earned money into expensive electronics dust catchers .. is that hard to understand that somebody simóy loves play with cables, connect things, laborate with richt connections, tweak physical knobs, etc ? It's the process, not result what is important (at least in many cases). Old buddhist truth - the patchitself is the destination (or something like that if i good remember)

As soon as one can afford i vest 16k of own money cause he simoly have that money - i don't see nothing wrong in burning those money in modules , even if result sounds just like bunch of bleeps and beeps. As soon as the process made him happy and allowed him for a short moment forget about dark reality of this world, it was meaningfull.

Spot on. Use the tools you find inspiring and that you can afford. I don’t really get why some people have such a problem with that idea. Envy? Dour utilitarianism? 🤷‍♂️
