NS2 cost $30 when released then the price was slashed quickly because stubborn iOS music producers sat on the fence due to the lack of audio tracks and waited for bargin basement sales. Had everyone jumped in and supported the app at full price (still a fraction of desktop software) then audio tracks would have been updated already.

Image-line was formed in 1994 and is a team of people working on desktop software that runs $100-$400. I think comparing that company’s software to one guy selling an app for $30 (now maybe $10? I don’t know) of which Apple takes 1/3, is a pretty unfair comparison.

Everyone has unique preferences so there is no one perfect DAW for all. I only tried FL Studio on iOS, but it didn’t click with me. I don’t diss it at all, and keep it and other DAW apps on my iPad for some experimentstion. They are all useful tools. For me NS2 works best. Some like FLSM or other other apps better - that’s cool. Why not use multiple apps for the strengths of each? We really have a great range of apps for super cheap on iOS. Just my 2 cents.

@Slam_Cut : Not everyone learns so easily though. If you’re one of those who can pick up things very easily then yeah, jumping around makes sense

    Yes, nice video.

But then, why not simply use Xequence 2 instead of ns2, add any number of instruments and tracks for Scales and then reference them as Ghost Notes in your track!?

    A fast example:

And then use them, also exchange them fast and easy for using different scales:

But works for any other track, so you can work on bass notes and drums based on the chords and so on

Because not everyone writes in 4/4 time and leaves it there . You can’t switch time signatures within a song like you can in NS2.

I just got started using Studio One 5 Artist, and the workflow is a lot like Nanostudio 2.

Would you still be using Studio One if NS2 had audio tracks?

  • i use this method for years, utilising fact that NS2 keyboard (in Obsidian, AUv3 instrument and External MIDI instrument) contains actually scales .. so i just set scale, play all notes and then normalize them and put to right to use them as guideline

Yeah, I kind of agree. Had audio tracks been present at launch, I think more people would have jumped on it at full price. I don't think it's completely the fault of the stubborn iOS music producers though. The developer had kind of promised it ... I remember at the time that it was the biggest reason to switch to NS2. It's a superb App for what it does do and still one of my go-to apps

Yes, for desktop plugins that are not available on iOS. Also, I can simulate audio tracks using Koala Sampler after the audio units are recorded in AUM.

I’ve talked a lot of shit about FLM in the past but I may have finally seen the light. The interface isn’t THAT wonky, just takes some getting used to. And I keep coming back to the fact that, minus a few bits and bobs, it basically amounts to NS2 with audio tracks. And I’m not paying for a new daw. So I’m glad I’ve kept this on my iPad, had a feeling I’d come around.

I think that was my biggest issue was FLSM's interface "being wonky", but I finally clicked with it after all these years. And I talked a lot of shit about FLSM too, but now I've produced my second Lofi EP in it (the first was in NS2), working on my "Winter" Lofi EP in it, and entering a beatmaking contest with it.

So FL Studio doesn’t host AUs, correct? Can it drive AUs hosted in AUM?

    How would this workflow look?

Not sure about the latter, but from other comments, seems like time signatures and hosting AUv3s is on the 2023 roadmap, which I'm excited about!

Hahaha! All good mate. 😃 Even next year it'll be further along than it is, yet even in its current state it's super useful. Just when AUs are added, I can then utilise my Lofi effects directly in FLSM rather than bounce to AUM. But I don't mind my current workflow either. I'm pretty quick in NS2, but quicker in FLSM! 😄 Such an easy app to use.

  • I’m intrigued by FL proper but I don’t have a laptop and I’m thinking I’ll just stick with iOS . Something to think about though along with where AEM will be going soon.

FL proper is much deeper and more involved than any iOS DAW, but it's also pretty fun to use. I don't have a laptop/desktop either and do miss FL proper.

But yes, I think I'll be sticking with iOS as well. As you said, FLSM and AEM are top-quality DAW apps and shaping up to be even better. NS2 is also a top-quality DAW app, and it's perfect for instrumental music like what I currently create. I do miss using Module in NS2, but I also wish NS2 had a humanise function for its piano roll, lol. (Which is why I have to adjust everything "by hand" in NS2, lol.)

I meant insofar as missing using NS2. Meaning I can't use Module in FLSM. I prefer FLSM, but I hope we get the AUv3 functionality soon so I can use Module within it.
