This is one of those "from the moment I saw it I wanted it" apps .. this is where Want eclipses Need.
I feel like the developer is creating plugins from his hardware sound modules, smart!
$14.99 in USA
Love this UI. Now I want a 6x9 MIDI knob controller to use with it!
Looks interesting, don’t know the original machine. I hope someone will demo this.

Where’s the Hihat?. I love/hate these toms, they give me good shivers.
“One engine recreates the sounds of the famous electronic drum module known as the Simmons SDS-V (very similar to the later SDS-8 model); at the same time, the exclusive GSi WLF Engine plays a multi-sample of real cymbals recorded exclusively for Drum-80.”
Ok.. sounds very pop-80s, not sure if it’s for me, but maybe a dry sound demo might convince me. Looks good.
I’m definitely interested in this, but would also love a few more demos.
Welp I can’t resist this.
Not trying to be contrary, but I always hated the 80s synthetic pop drums
Yeah, it could get very cheesy, that’s why a demo of the dry sounds would be welcome. My first drummachine I bought in 1990 (I think) was a Yamaha RX7 from 1986, that was very pop in my memories. It even had a ‘get funky’ speech sample.. It sucked to hard.
Your verdict, sir?
I think it was a sound of a specific era - you hear it and you can immediately date a song to within a relatively small range of years.
I had an RX5. It was one of the best drum machines I ever used. It had all those funky speech samples. It could also pitch those samples +/- over 2 octaves. It also had envelopes, pitch bend, reverse etc. Many of those things could be programmed per step. I believe the RX7 had many of those functions. There’s a lot of capability there if you look for it. Too late now though I guess…
Fantastic! I've been looking everywhere for a good non-sample based version of the Simmons drums. The current version of GarageBand has a Simmons kit built-in, but it has none of the customizability I'm seeing here. This looks awesome.
Downloadable demo for Mac or Windows: https://www.genuinesoundware.com/?a=showproduct&b=61
I downloaded it for testing and I'm impressed so far... Now if only they'd make an add-on for Remo Rototoms, my quest would be complete.
“Get funky yeah!”
I gave the RX7 away, it was only used by the spiders in my basement. Indeed, you could pitch the samples and some other stuff I can’t remember. I later bought a modified tr606, way more simplistic but it had the sounds I liked.
Ah, rototoms! I had two on my kit, along with a JHS drum synth and a DR 55 rhythm machine. The drum machine was the only part that kept good time…
Might have to get this. Lusted after an SDS5 at the time, despite the risk of ‘Simmons Wrist’ (the original kits had surfaces of hard plastic, like Formica, and beating on it for too long created an industrial injury just for drummers…)
Amazing developer🙏🏆
Echo vari gs is powerfull plugin😎🌋
Yeah - I had a 606 too. That was a good one. Remember this? And I’m done hijacking this thread! 😆
Did you like it enough to buy the full version?
Oh yeah, that’s exactly how it sounded, and I still have no regrets that I gave it away 😆
I’m messing around with it and seriously considering. My biggest concern is that it’s not available through the desktop App Store. I really don’t know why any developer chooses to not offer more ways to sell their software to make it convenient for their customers. Anyway…
I like the sound of it. Nice and to the point.
Also I’m extremely envious of people than can finger drum like this!. I just can’t get the bass drum/snare play right with my left hand. If I use my right hand I can’t do proper Hihat… so I guess the problem is my left hand . Wow, that was off topic..
Wasn’t a huge fan of the GSI demo vid for this. From the appstore description, the non-cymbals part is based on the SDS-V, which sounds similar to the SDS-8. Below is a cool demo of the SDS-8 which is much more up my street. Can Drum-80 sound like this? Would love for someone who has this to post an experimental demo!
Also, does this app not have multi-out? Don't see that mentioned in the app store description
It can definitely get into that territory when messing with the FM module and pitch and decay. It’s probably my favorite GSI app at the moment. I have work for the week/weekend, but if I get the chance I can try and post a demo of it in action, running through some saturation and distortion.
Imo, for me it’s worth the price and does what it does very well. Probably a top 3-5 drum app for me at the moment.
Nice! No multi-out tho?
