Anyone still using Rebirth-RB338

I’ve just re-downloaded on my iPad. Forgot how much fun it was. Still sounds great.

Amazing how Rebirth has stood the test of time. I remember using it as a student in the mid 90s (in fact I still have the original boxed version for PC/Mac from that time).

    It's still great!

  • Yep, still got it on the ipad and use it from time to time. It’s very well featured. Amazing for its time.

No, sadly, long gone. I think you can still re-install it if you own it, but that's it. Had to be taken down because of allegations of copyright infringement of some sort I believe.

I had it on Amiga 500. Very fun.

It's awesome. Unfortunately last time I tried installing on my PC it was a pain. Gotta try it again.

A fun thing I tried only one on iOS was that option to jam with someone else on the same device. Two modules got flipped the other way  Edit: The DUO mode. Unfortunately couldn't find the promo videos on that

That's a known problem of iPadOS 16.1.1. Try updating to 16.2. It's somewhat better.

If it says "Cannot connect to App Store. Retry", just be persistent with retries, and it should work, eventually.

I just hit the download button. Took about a minute.

  • I had forgotten I even had this… and that it includes some of the good mods that were available. Aaaah, I wish one could get some of those other old mods into this version.

  • Still have it on my iPad. Bought the Mac version many years back on CD in the 90s. Back then it was really something..

For a good old school acid mix I add this youtube. Brings back memories B)

Yes that’s what I thought. I do have it on a couple of my iPads but not on another two older ones that I recently got a hold of for a variety of reasons - that would have been good. I do feel really lucky to have them to play with at all.
I can’t understand why It had to be taken down?? I think it was something to do with an objection from Roland- but then Berhinger go and release an almost replica of the original - and they are allowed to do so. How is this? - and there is also many ther emulations that are allowed to continue. Why Rebirth only? I don’t understand.
Anyway, and probably slightly controversially I think it is a great pity because my belief is that Rebirth is a significant bit closer to the 303 sound than the current closest available -Pure Acid (brilliant as it is) - and it’s something that should be right there but is so far away. So many people will miss out - but I can’t understand why? Why hit Rebirth and let the others thrive?

  • sweet thing is it exports the full tune as AudioCopy, to the Retronyms AudioCopy app (Rebirth on ipad is Retronyms after all). If you don’t have that app installed the .wav goes to general pasteboard (pops in AudioShare among others…

  • I was still using it until recently, but after discovering Pure Acid I find it can’t compete with that. Two instances of Pure Acid running via Audiobus obsoleces Rebith for me.

Pure Acid does sound fantastic. Wish I could automate parameters (as in Rebirth).

Just a guess, but I think it's from lack of will to maintain it. Some lawyer sends a cease and desist letter, or complains to Apple. They do that kind of shot over the bow all the time.

Propeller Heads take one look at how much revenue the app is bringing in vs. how much it costs to maintain it, and decide it's just not worth the bother to fight. Hell, even a response letter, or appeal to Apple would probably cost more than the app could bring in for years. Just not worth it.

I say this with some confidence because something similar happened with the iPhone version. The iPhone version was a separate app / purchase. It had some problems, and rather than continuing to maintain it, they nuked it. This was long before the complaint that led them to stop selling the iPad version.

If own iPad version on any of your devices, you can probably back up the apk with iMazing (the free version is fine for this), then install it on your other devices. Maybe.

Once it's gone-gone from the App Store, and no longer available in your purchased apps list, it's too late to do an iMazing backup.

Berhinger probably paid Roland some money to license it.

Behringer aren't exactly known for going that route. They have good lawyers and are infamously not afraid to use them. When it comes to lawyers, it usually just becomes a game of chicken.

Good lawyers would tell them not to steal other people's intellectual property without paying for it. Or do you have "inside information" on them not paying?

Sorry, not gonna get into it with you. I don't care enough about the subject.

What I've said is all based on anecdotal conclusions drawn from much reading of sources mentioned in rants against Behringer on this forum. I went down that rabbit hole based on people here that think they're evil incarnate. I had never heard a thing about it so I did some reading up and learned a few things. It was enough for me to understand why people feel that way while not enough to put me off of buying their products if I ever wanted one of them.

If you're interested in digging in, it doesn't take much searching to find plenty of material calling into question Behringer's ethics.

Me neither. But I did see that Roland has alread sued Behringer:

Cool to see the article uses one of Doug's ReBirth videos.

Thanks Wim - there is no iMazing app in my AppStore though - it looks like Mac only.

  • One thing I never understood from Roland is why it took so long for them to bring alternatives for their 808/909/303 line. It became such a hype in the early 90s, but it took so many years for them with an answer. In the meantime other companies already jumped in the gap. Why didn’t they re-release their old line, maybe an extra connection here and there? They invented one of the most important rhythm and baseline machines in history.
