One thing I never understood from Roland is why it took so long for them to bring alternatives for their 808/909/303 line.

They literally invented the (still massively popular) Groovebox concept as an acknowledgment of the popularity. And they even priced it to make it accessible for anyone. Remember that synths and music hardware was typically still really expensive in those days.

They just underestimated how much people wanted a 1:1 remake of the original product rather than a further development of the concept.

People ridicule and make fun of the MC-303. But I believe it was a milestone innovation at the time.

Yes, I do remember this one, it’s a rompler with some adjustments. Even if the concept is revolutionary, back then and still now people just wanted the real deal. And not a funny box aimed at amateurs. It costed me a small fortune to buy and import a used 303 and 606 from England to the Netherlands as it was so impossible to find them here. I remember I felt kind of disappointed at how small, cheap and plastic these things where irl. They came with a silver carrying bag, to think off how cool that would be now to walk around a 303 in its own purse :)

Got to remember the 303 and 606 were “funny boxes aimed at amateurs” in their time too. In fact, the mc303 was actually aimed at a more professional demographic than the original boxes were. Check out the album with Beck, Sonic Youth, Air etc they used for promotion: “At Home With The Groovebox”.

True. To think that the purpose of a 303 was to emulate the sound of a bass guitar. It kind of sounds like everything and his brother except a realistic bass guitar.

Really? You don’t think so? I suppose I have some unconventional opinions of the 303, but I’m best known as a bass player, and I often use the 303 as the stand in for an electric bass guitar on recordings. Filter and resonance closed, envelope on 3/4 full, decay closed. Then lift resonance and filter just a little to taste. Sounds just like a bass guitar to me as long as the sequencer is programmed with a bass guitar part.

Of course, I also think the sequencer is the simplest sequencer in the world to use, even to program a line you have in your head, rather than just a happy accident. I know most people don’t agree with me 😄

I have rebirth on an old ipad mini. Is there any way i can install that on my ipad pro 18?

If both iPads are using the same account the log into the App Store and go to your purchases. Keep scrolling. You'll eventually find it.

Well, I think it’s very cool you use a 303 as a stand in for base B)

It's taking too much space on my shelf, but I cannot part ways with mine for two reasons... historical meaning and sometimes I do like to have fun with it too

I think that's interesting. And back then there where some bands that used the TB as a normal bass and it still sounds good on those tracks. Of course it didn't sound like a Jaco Pastorious playing, but it did have space on non-acid stuff.
(I'm trying to recall a track that even used both TB and a human player together)
