Has the Ipad Air enough ram to make music?

Not after I've seen what I've seen

@Cinebient if it works for you. The clamshell design for me is too much of the 'guy in front a computer on stage'. iPads can be put flat on the table/Stand, seems more discreet. Also laptop seems more delicate compared to an ipad with a thick case. Each to their own I guess.

Where does the idea that an entire studio needs to be contained inside a little tablet come from?

It comes from the fact that these devices are, slowly, moving towards that very capability. My iPhone 5 is my music studio.

    Cream filled? Nah, I'm good.

  • I'm taking credit for making this thread actually worthwhile.

Emphasis on the word "needs", as in the argument that devices that can't accomplish that are not useful for making music.

My iPhone has a terrible keyboard, it's not even velocity sensitive. Its mic isn't very good either.
I'd much rather use it as only part of my setup.

    Only if you brought donuts...

  • Not sure this can be of any help, but one of the issues I've experienced with the iPad is that some apps and services seem to not release all the resource they use when you shut them down (a bit like windows basically)
So I've invested in Sys-Activity, a small app which just refreshes the memory pointers and is able to release a lot of memory when you open and close a few apps. It's like shutting the system down and restarting it. I've perceived a lot more system and apps stability since I've been using it.

There are probably other apps that do the same, just wanted to point at a possible approach to reduce the hassle :)

    HTH

I think the title of this should have been "Can I make music on an ipad given i want to use a program like Reason". The answer to which is probably no.

I think the title of this thread should have been "can the iPad sustain a low altitude and still maintain control like a hovercraft".

  • Elvis has left the building.

  • Now I want a hamburger...

  • Speaking of hamburgers, has anyone tried Five Guys? That's good stuff. More the fries than anything. I like them with vinegar.

  • And here is a unicorn trying to drag a rainbow he shat out off his butt.

  • Nice to see the quality of a thread improve over time.

  • Yeah, I've been to Five Guys. Their fries are good, and they give you enough to feed a platoon.

  • Yeah, ordered large fries once, and they talked me out of it- regular is still a shitload of 'em....

  • If we don't see at least a doubling of ram on the next ipad I see no reason at all to upgrade as I always max out my ipad airs ram before it's CPU....

In fact I can't remember the last time I maxed its CPU...

  • I've been eating at Five Guys for almost 20 years now. I have to limit my visits to only once a month, though. I tend to go overboard on the fries and then fall asleep on my ipad.

I highly recommend the cajun spice on the fries.

My friend, a graphic artist, once threatened to make a new Internet meme: "Two Unicorns, One Rainbow" by superimposing illustrations of such over a certain famous Internet video with a similar name. I wish he had so I could post it here.

Also, Nanostudio. 15 synths + effects on an iPad 2.

I think more ram will open up Audiobus' multi-routing capabilities.

I wouldn't mind live sequencing iSem, Thumbjam, Nave, Sector, Alchemy, Sunrizer, Mitosynth all together along with a host of Sugarbites, Chris Rice and J Liljedahls Fx all automated through Cubasis/Audiobus and saving all of their states.....oh and squeezing it all live through Final Touch :)

Only a few months and that could be a reality when the latest ipad hits the stores (ram permitting of course).

  • You can make incredibly complex music on an iPad Air. As someone stated earlier, it just means you don't have multiple different synth apps playing in real time all at once.

It's a different workflow than most traditional PC/Mac based DAWs, but it can work very well. Cubasis, BeatMaker2, Auria and NanoStudio all have their own workflow, but it can all be done.

  • GBK was pretty good too when I was in London. The relish was really the kicker.

  • All the RAM in the world won't stop clicking and popping if the CPU can't keep up.

I don't think CPU is a problem on air. I'm always at ram 97% and CPU 30% roughly speaking.

  • I'm pretty sure it is on ipad2 though.
What do you use to see those figures?

  • App called System Tools. I think it is free.

  • Thanks.

  • Even though I had Reason on my computer at home, I abandoned it to make music exclusively on my IPad. The apps are amazing, and there was no way I could effectively use Reason and eat at 5 Guys Burgers & Fries with that old school set up!

    ROFLMAO!!
Reminds me of a recent story: A couple decided to make fun of a group protesting outside a clinic by making their own signs with blurbs like ''I LIKE TURTLES' and join the protestors.
