Not a fellow Scot by any chance? :#

Yes indeed. A Glaswegian now living in Forfar 😃

    Where are you?

Currently in Liverpool area, from Stirlingshire originally. Spent 10 years in Glasgow studying, working, but I've been around a bit since. Passed through Forfar often on my way to the Moray Firth, and I'm sure I stopped at a chippy there once or twice :)

OK, I’ve knocked something up in Drambo if anyone cares to try it?

I’ve called it Drumbo. I’ve only tested it on the Think break so far in the video below.

I have no idea if this is anything like Knock as I don’t own it, but I’ve tried to recreate the steps.

The biggest missing part is auto makeup gain on the ‘punch’ compressor as I don’t think Drambo does it.

Anyway, file attached if you want to try it. Load it as a preset for the processor rack module.

I’m very far from a Drambo expert so if anyone can suggest a better way to do any parts, I’m all ears.

Oh, and I’ve put a compressor on the end of the chain acting as a limiter so it should be safe for your headphones/ears

Hip hop vernacular “Knock” is not typically a subtle effect, it’s distortion that hits your chest 🫡 it’s like taking drum chops and heating them up in the pan until the oil starts popping 🍳 and they have some artifacts, drums ALL UP FRONT

    Here go some “Knock” 👊🏼

When drums “Knock” they can survive on their own and move a freestyle cypher 🤝

Yeah it's hard to underestimate how far this can push a sound in terms of volume and texture without any clipping etc. I don't think it's just hype that has made this plugin popular

Yes! Clipping is key, although Knock, the plugin, can do other things than just make drums hit hard.

Before Knock, personally I was using RX950 for drum PUNCH, grit and dirt:

Oh for sure. I think I made a little video using it for something more ambient.

Is it a must have? A bit overrated?

After a couple of months with it, I find that I prefer Beef over Knock. I'm not knocking Knock. It's an amazing plugin and was worth dropping 30 quid for it, but I'd buy Beef first by @CaelumAudio . It's what I use on my beats.

The thing that’s stopped me from jumping on it is owning Beef already. I definitely think I’m still gonna get it at some point, I’m just not in a huge rush.

Doesn’t Fosfat do something similar or am I misremembering?

It really is! I started using RX950 upon recommendation when I began producing Lofi. It provided such a great sound. Even though I don't strictly produce Lofi when it comes to beatmaking, I still stick RX950 on a master buss, then MagicDeathEyeStereo, then Barricade, and then Youlean's Loudness Meter.

I never did buy Fosfat. I think it's iPad-only sadly. And yeah mate, Beef is so excellent. "Expensive" doesn't always mean "better". I prefer Beef to Decap (although no cap I like Decap's GUI a little bit more), but I don't regret purchasing Decap. Great plugins.

Interesting, the RX950 was one of the first fx I bought, will try this as well on mastering. So you stick this on the master, then MagicDeathEye and then Barricade, etc. But since Barricade is also compressor (you put after MagicDeathEye), do you use it only for Limiting then? And I wonder if you can measure the Lufs with it, I kind of struggle with the correct loudness levels, as I understood that it should be -14 Lufs for steaming content or else stuff gets smashed. Was thinking about getting Trinity for this, but since it’s not auv3 I can’t put any fx before or after it.

And I agree completely. Some of my favorite apps are free or under $5-$10. Beef is definitely awesome. There’s also Roast Beef which is like a preset version. If I don’t wanna fiddle with parameters, I’ll load it up sometimes.

Yep, I first use a gain of some sort to get the loudest part of a track to peaking around -12dB roughly. Then I slap on RX950. MagicDeathEyeStereo is for gluing the track (with reduction to about -2 to -3 dB, fast attack, release on setting 5). With Barricade, I use the "loud master" preset but I turn off the compressor before adjusting the limiter's gain. I trust Youlean Loudness Meter as it seems the most accurate LuFS meter and usually target an LuFS level of between -14 and -15.

Trinity is truly a gorgeous app, but there are way too many moving parts within it for my caveman brain to fully comprehend. 😂 I just like to keep things simple and mimick the way mastering used to be done while adhering to modern loudness standards and not squashing the bejesus out of a mix. (I used to master to -8 LuFS when producing EDM as that's the modern loudness standard for modern DJs, and it's just so fatiguing on the ears.)

I wish that was ported to iOS. Would be cool to try it. I don’t have a desktop unfortunately

  • I finally bit after talking to a buddy who uses Knock on his desktop Ableton setup. My interest was piqued after I learned the sub control had a full chromatic note control. Now my songwriting is much more rock and indie based than hip hop but I love to experiment and try stuff.

Knock is wicked on drums… but it’s also cool on bass. I tried it on my Jazz bass with flat wounds on it and on my Music Man StingRay with round wounds and it yielded very useful results. I love this plugin…

Oooo RX950 is a great one. I haven’t tried MagicDeathEye. Think MagicVerb is the only plug-in from him that I have but I do love it. Sounds amazing. I have trinity as well but I haven’t finished a track since buying it so I can’t truly test it out 😂 there are lots of moving parts for sure. I’m gonna have to watch some vids about it lol.

I get on you on the iPhone thing though. There are lots of times I just find myself twiddling with some random app on my phone. I need to carry by Bluetooth buds everywhere in case inspiration s tricks somewhere quiet 😂

Also meant more of the recent releases but I’d be interested in hearing both. So many good apps over the last few months.

Thanks for the info! Youleans Loudness Meter is a great tip, this is what I was looking for :)

Just FYI you probably shouldn't master to anything below -14LUFS because you could end up with a master that is quiet compared to other tracks. It's safer to aim for something between -13 and -14.

This is because if your track is louder than -14 LUFS the streaming services will turn it down to comply with their loudness normalisation, but if it is quieter than -14 they won't necessarily turn it up. Long story short: if you master to -15 LUFS your track will be quieter than everyone else's. You would be better off with a louder master, between -13 and -14.

Ultimately though you should compress and limit your master so that it sounds good, and is somewhat louder than -14 LUFS (for safety). This should still result in a very dynamic track that isn't crushed by the limiter: even at -13LUFS there should be plenty of headroom for transients.

Thank you Richard, really great info!

Ah see I didn't know this. This is valuable to know. Thanks mate. :)

  • Lots of chat about Knock in the Knock Clipper release thread so figured I would jump back into this one.

I wasn’t able to get Beef sounding close on the Knock settings I liked. Knock sounded far crisper and cleaner to me.

I think there’s room for both.

Does Beef have oversampling? I couldn’t see it in description. It looks like Knock does (or at least HQ mode)…? Thanks

Does anyone know how long Knock’s on sale for?

Edit: never mind. I bought it. It’s great
