  • Ooooh an Ondes Martenot app, count me in!

Is this one gonna be Universal?

  • Does Maarten know?...

  • @PaulB, Wait let me get my pouch with chicken bones! I'll let you know in a sec...

  • Mmmm... Pouch with chicken bones... Arhghhh..

  • I love this.

  • Nice one! I'll be waiting for it.

What about Petites Ondes? A good virtual Ondes Martenot which never got updated, no Audiobus, no IAA :/

  • @benkamen - Very cool! I thought dot-Melody was a great concept and especially loved Chordion, but always appreciate the effort to think "outside the box". This looks to be (extremely) polyphonic and the interface already makes it easy to follow what notes you are playing, which was one my initial concerns with dot-Melody.

Questions I have, though I don't expect the dev to want to answer all of them right now:

    • Is there a record/automation feature, similar to Propellerhead's "Figure"? In the video, there are multiple notes sliding around simultaneously, but this would be much easier to program one at a time!

    • AudioBus, IAA, ACP, or all of the above? (May be too soon to ask)

    • How many presets? The video displayed several different sounds, but is it a full synth engine where you can mess with the waveforms, or more of an "instrument" where it makes just a handful of sounds.

    • Can you assign different filters or mods to the Y-axis? Pretty sure I heard the sound change depending on where the notes were depressed.

Looks great, and will definitely keep an eye out for it. Reminds me a little of Virtual ANS (from SunVox developer) but I like the control interface on this one better.

  • @StormJH1 some of your answers:

    • yes, Audiobus, yes IAA.
    • it is a full synth engine and you can make your own presets. it will of course come with a handful of built-in presets.

    Perfect, fair enough...Sounds great!

Maybe come back here and post in this thread when it is submitted to Apple, helps the app sharks in this forum to keep their eyes peeled for a new release :)

  • @JohnnyGoodyear My guess is end of August / beginning of September. But I can't promise!

  • Get (back) to work!

    (and thanks.... :)

  • Thumbjam kinda covers this area, right?

  • Not really, this appears to have a "real" synth engine, vs ThumbJam's sample based one.

  • Here's a demo of the Oscillator Section:

  • @benkamen in the off chance you haven't noticed, Ondes is in the featured apps up top in music (the scroller) and is the first app in "Best New Apps". Congrats!

  • @syrupcore thanks! yea, I saw that :)

  • @benkamen I have purchased some of your apps and am quite pleased with them. If you are still following this thread, I have a user request. Consider Bpm sync and midi out. Thanks

  • I don't think MIDI out is possible according to @benkamen's comment in this thread

    http://www.forum.audiob.us/discussion/5894/appsscala-files#Item_11

  • Thats to bad. Ah well, theres always hope with other apps.

  • Hi. Yes, I've been preparing a FAQ about why this isn't in the cards. Here it is, sorry I haven't edited it carefully yet....

    FAQ:

Can you add MIDI out to Ondes?

In short, no. While it might be possible to do in some regard - the real problem would finding a synthesizer that would respond appropriately the MIDI data being sent.

There are several types of MIDI messages. A few of the most common are note messages (note-on and note-off), continuous controller (like the mod wheel), and pitch bend. Another type is “polyphonic aftertouch,” which is less common (more on that in a minute).

Note messages look like this : A note number (60 is middle C) followed by a velocity (0-127). A velocity of 1-127 is a note-on message, and a velocity of 0 is a note-off message. Because note-on messages are given velocity only at the beginning of a note, this rules out the use of note messages for controlling the volume of a note. And, also rules out the use of note message for pitch bends.

Pitch bend is a value in the range 0 to 16383, where 8192 is “no pitch bend.”

So, why not just use pitch bend from Ondes to control another synth? Pitch bend is applied to an entire MIDI channel — if you hold down two notes and use the pitch bend wheel, you bend both notes together.

In addition, different synthesizers have different pitch bend ranges - some synths have a pitch bend range of +/- a whole tone, and some use a pitch bend range of +/- an octave. Some might also have adjustable settings for pitch bend.

Continuous controller, or CC, messages look like this : a controller number (1 is mod wheel, 7 is volume, 10 is pan, etc) and a value (0-127).

Similarly, CC messages apply to an entire channel, so changing the volume of one note also affects the volume of all other notes unless they are on separate channels.

That brings us to polyphonic aftertouch. Some MIDI keyboards have an aftertouch sensitivity that send per-note data in the range 0-127. Ondes could conceivably send a MIDI note followed by polyphonic aftertouch to represent pitch bend. Importantly, the range of 0-127 is not a fine enough resolution for pitch bend, especially across multiple octaves. With a 1 octave range, the resolution would be almost 10 cents per step.

The best MIDI implementation that I can think of is to use a separate MIDI channel for each note, and to use pitch bend on each channel for pitch control while using CCs for volume.

    So why not do that?!

Here’s the real problem : for this implementation to work, it requires that the receiving synth knows what to do with that all that MIDI information. A deep and customizable synthesizer could likely be set up to approximate the desired effect, but it wouldn’t be “plug and play” by any means. It would require careful and deliberate routing of the MIDI information to control precisely the output. Because of this, it seems unlikely that anyone would actually use the MIDI out of Ondes, and those who did would be probably be disappointed when it wasn’t obvious and easy to use.

  • Great, readable FAQ on the subject. Cheers.

For what it's worth, there are synths out there (on iOS) that support this though I couldn't tell you which off the top of my head (but @sonosaurus probably can). Thumbjam and I believe the iFretless apps transmit this way (channel per touch + bend).

  • I just picked this up, and holy crap am I having a blast! Ondes > Stereo Designer > Crystalline with a sequence of Bach's Passacaglia bass line running in the background via Xynthesizr.

"Oh bliss! Bliss and heaven! Oh, it was gorgeousness and gorgeousity made flesh. It was like a bird of rarest-spun heaven metal or like silvery wine flowing in a spaceship, gravity all nonsense now. As I slooshied, I knew such lovely pictures!" — Alex

  • I'd love to hear how the MIDI out on those apps is working and also if it's not generating complaints/confusion!

@kgmessier !!! seems like Ondes and Holderness media apps are good friends :)

  • Ok, just a thought on a way to expand Ondes so could I leverage say Wave Generator with this very playable instrument that is Ondes. Back to Tc Data for that.

Bpm sync on the effects would make a difference for a user like me.

No reason to respond as I have already purchased this app, I'll just wait and see what comes of it. Thanks again

  • Thanks @WMWM, like a tap tempo function for the LFOs?

  • That would be great. Im not sure if its possible but an assignable one would be awsome. I do really like Ondes' freedoms, just looking for more ways to weild it. This app is worth the asking price and I personally would buy IAP of functionality and content.

    Thanks for the great apps.

    Peace
