okay to ask here?, for Sunvox, what is a "tracker" vs a daw or sequencer, whatever it compares to?

Of course it's OK to ask ... one way to define a tracker is a pattern based type of sequencer, often with a simpler, often text-based interface, which were popular in the days of the Amiga/AtariST ... so notes would often be entered e.g. as C2 or F3 rather than on a piano roll type interface for example. Trackers did many of the same things that modern DAWs do but with a more primitive interface.
I used to use tracker type tools back in the 90s when I was running an AtariST, before I got into Notation and more graphical type sequencing tools.
That's my understanding anyways.
Without wishing to divert this vital thread too much, a more traditional interpretation of a tracker on iOS is VividTracker (by the same dev behind the new VividShaper). I've spent weeks now in a 90s timewarp reminiscing about demoscene music etc...
Trackers date back to the world of DOS and the Commdore Amiga computers before there were graphical user interfaces and the creator had to design a way to present the text and drawings. As a result they have a custom interface that looks a lot like a huge spreadsheet of data to define every note and how it should be treated with FX, volume changes, etc.
It’s so painful to contemplate for modern music producers that it’s considered to be torture to learn and master.
Most of the time the app sales kick in here at the same time as the USA (the app goes on sale everywhere globally at the same time).
Other times it is set to local time so we get it first and the sale ends here first.
I guess developers have that option in their settings when they put an app on sale...?
Some people compare it to writing music in a spreadsheet.
That’s the compliant but as the video emphasizes MIDI players in that era were non-standard in their sound fonts and Trackers allowed the composer to implement their own samples. That was a huge improvement.
The only commercial product that had a similar approach was Thomas Dolby’s company Headspace and their “Beatnik” software. But Dolby created a file format called the Rich Music Format:

Interesting timing on the Tracker topic.
Huh. Interesting i never really thought about that. I just figured the majority went into effect staggered by time zone. Since it seems there is two ways to unveil the sales it make sense that it is a developer option, but I do not know.

I don't have the space to try this on my iPad (too much music stuff!) but if anyone is interested I saw this app being discussed at the Stable Diffusion subreddit r/ StableDiffusion .
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/draw-things-ai-generation/id6444050820
The initial download is only 34.6 MB but after it installs it requires a 2gig download for the model. iPhone X's and up, macOS 12.4 and above. Runs Stable Diffusion from 1.5 to 2.1 in resolutions up to 960x960 according to the developer.
In case anyone is interested.
It does what it does and doesn’t do what it doesn’t do. There’s no reason to own it, but I’m glad I bought it.
An app that punches way, way above its price point, $3 is criminally low for its depth. Remember this puppy has QWERTY keyboard -> note support. One of the few in the AppStore.
An app from a guy who wrote an entire album on his freaking Palm Pilot — using a daw he wrote himself, obviously.
You said it better than I ever could. 😆
Haha fair enough! Might pick it up just because.
There are so many. I think WOMBO is still mostly free. It has trackers and It has a paid subscription but last time I used it I could do several things.
I think imaginAI is free
Wombo though, has that cheesy looking framing is there any way to get it to produce stuff with just a clean rectangular frame?
SunVox was one of the first apps I bought on iOS, 12 yrs ago. I’ve used it on 4 platforms now. It’s the mystery I can’t quite fathom or leave alone. I strive and it gives me a whack and sends me back to strive some more.
