@pax-eterna - The simplest way to play from local files is to copy them into the VLC folder using the files app. Though you're copying, it will not take up any extra space on your device because of the way iOS handles files. You can use folders if you like but I don't think the structure is reflected inside the app. You can also create playlists once the files are available.

Ok, I'll go back and try it again....downloaded and deleted several apps already hahaha!

Oh and mebbe a tad OT, but do you know much about iCloud, and auto syncing?

It isn't obvious at all how to get a playlist going from local files. It took me some time to figure out to try just copying the files into the VLC folder. They could improve the usability there.

Well ... only that you have zero control over it. It works fabulously as long as all your devices are online and have good internet. But, you have no control over what stays local on your device. You also have no control over how much of your device storage is taken up by iCloud files. It is pretty amazing to be typing something into a note on one device and watching it sync letter by letter in realtime to another though.

I learned that one when I was planning to do some reading on a backpacking trip. Nothing in iBooks was available. Now I download everything to the Kindle app.

I still use iCloud as my main repository so that everything is consistent across devices. But planning is needed if internet access isn't going to be an option.

  • Cool, you know more than I haha - my question is, if I create an audio file on my PC and upload to iCloud, will that file automatically appear on every iOS device? Or, do I need to make a setting somewhere?

I looked at the Apple info pages for iCloud but couldn't really tell for sure. More a curiosity question as when I next do some files I guess I'd find out then, but yeah, if I can confirm earlier that would be nice :)

  • So far so good...one slightly annoying thing is if you stop a file, go to another one and come back it plays from where you stopped instead of at the beginning....not a biggie, but be nice if one could stop that.

Shameless ad: MusicFolder does rotate to landscape, but it can only play files stored locally on your device using the "Files" app, not music from your (iTunes) library.

Easy purchase! I had no apps that could play my various Lofi EPs on my iPhone in shuffle mode. This app has saved the day as well as giving a little support your way mate.

Try setting Continue audio playback to Never. I think that has to do with returning to where you were between uses of the app, not this, but maybe it'll work for that.

  • Neutron is probably the best music player on iOS - highly customizable. I’m sure it can do everything you need and a lot more, but has a steep learning curve.

+1. Neutron is the most powerful music player I know.
Here's an excerpt from its play modes (in landscape rotation 😊)

Thanks, I'll check it. Assuming that screenshot was an iphone and not an ipad, it looks like it would be the bomb!

Ok, it's $15 (which is not too bad) so before purchase can you confirm that screenshot in landscape is on an iPhone? The specs listed do not actually specify it.

Bought it and can confirm !

    Did you try VLC?

Yeah I tried it and it's ok - but that Neutron looks pretty cool and has a lot of stuff that might be useful one day. And $15 isn't much really.

  • Sheesh, that Neutron IS the bomb - just been playing around with it (and really only scratched the surface) and wow, very much worth the $14!

Yep, and it's the only one I know (except Drambo+RadioUnit of course) that can apply a fully parametric EQ to a live stream as well. Great for headphones and loudspeakers forward correction.

  • VLC also has an equalizer available. I've never tried it though.
