Best Chiptune Synth AUv3s in 2023 (that still function fine)

Hi everyone! So now that my latest EP has been released, I'm ready to get crackin on my next EP, which will be very much Chiptune! If you have any recommendations for the best Chiptune synths of 2023, I'm all ears.

I'll start. I do know Pure Synth Platinum 2 has a great 8-bit pack (already owned!), and I know Saga Synth (which I also already own). What else is out there I may have forgotten about, have missed, etc? :)

  • SquareSynth 2 and OPL are two good candidates for starters... :sunglasses:

SQUARESYNTH!!! That's the one I was looking for!!! Also checking OPL! Thanks mate.

  • Yep, would 2nd both of Samu’s recommendations there, I’m a more dabbler in chip sounds here and there, but if he gives you a recommendation about this kind of thing, you know it’s legit!

  • I was just thinking of finally using some synths in one of my projects and the first thing I thought of was the Commodore 64 SID sounds. I found a couple of apps out there but none are auv3. Am I missing anything?

I purchased both. I didn't know Squaresynth had a sequel for 10 quid. Easy instant purchase. And OPL is a chiptune FM synth, probably to produce more Sega sounds. 7 quid. So, 17 quid and change, I have what I need to produce the wild and raw synth sounds in my mind.

Yeah, the only apps that do SID type chip sounds are SidTracker 64 and Deflemask (which does a lot more).
SidTracker64 can be used as an IAA Generator (Launch first before making any connections) and Deflemask can export stuff.

Other apps that are suitable for the genre but need a little (ok a lot) more patience are SunVox and tadaaa Drambo.

@jwmmakerofmusic In case you already have Drambo you can download this Instrument rack for Drambo.
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/sjayhr4gk4ahpft/ChipLead.zip?dl=0
(Extract and copy to Instrument Rack folder in your Drambo folder with Files.app).

This is how it sounds for those interested...
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/dp0axcx1ydfdnxv/ChipLead.mp4?dl=0

    Cheers!

Hahaha, I had a feeling someone would mention Drambo here, lol. 🤣 Yeah, what can't Drambo do? Well, I guess it can't cook me food, but it can cook up some sick beats.

Well if Drambo can do it, Audulus can indubitably do it too!

Don’t forget the ones in Gadget. More romplers than synths but may have something you can use. I can’t vouch for the quality of any of them as it is not a genre I am familiar with.

Edit: oops, yes as Robin2 said, you wanted AUv3 which would rule Gadget out.

  • Wouldn’t Nanoloop count?

  • And the Pixitrackers?

  • Sorry, sorry…you wanted AUv3!

  • Sunvox (which has SCC/PC Engine-style wave draw modules) and shapesynth by humbleTune!

I used to love playing in Sunvox. I'll redownload and have to give it a go again! "Shapesynth"? I'll check it out, thanks. :)

Well I do love Gadget and have built some chiptune-styled stuff in it before. <3

@Robin2 Thanks for the suggestions. I miss playing with the Pixitrackers. I'll have to muck about in them again.

    Thanks everybody!

  • I love SunVox but it’s a lot more complex app. Shape synth can yield good result quicker.

  • @jwmmakerofmusic And, of course, don’t forget the Pixitrackers can export to XM which can be dropped straight into Sunvox without any hassle, where you would have that extra connectivity.

  • Haven't purchased OPL yet but that's on my to do list. Squaresynth 2 is excellent although the faders are a bit fiddly (you have to drag by placing your finger slightly to the side of it rather than on top of it)

Also, since this post came out, Minibit was released (which is also on my list), same with SNESynth (getting that next Friday)

Minibit is fantastic! Used that on my "Neon Dreamscape". :)

  • Yeah I gotta check that out. Been meaning to do an entirely chiptunes-based album for a while now

If anyone's interested in SquareWave 2, this was done using it (it's my daughter's song, my patches)

Your daughter made a song?! How cool is that?! 😃 Will check it once I'm off of Discord voicechat. Videogaming at the moment lol.

  • On the Desktop Deflemask finally has some real competition form Furnace tracker...

    https://tildearrow.org/furnace/

The available chip list is HUGE can even contains an YM2413(OPZ), the FM Chip used in the TX81z...

Thank you! I posted her first solo album in the creations thread (the original version of this song was on there); she has been playing keyboards since she was 7 (there's videos on YouTube of her lol ; she's 16 now), and also plays bass, guitar, and is learning drums. Money permitting will be getting her a Reface DX for her birthday next year

@jwmmakerofmusic SNESynth from AudioKit is a new one. I have it and it sounds good but I haven’t used it extensively.

    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/snesynth-chiptune-power/id6455731509

And it’s on sale right now including free expansion pack.

  • I hesitate to say this, because I hold Matthew in some esteem, but per Appsliced...

    Recent Price Changes
    $3.99 since Sep 27, '23
    $2.99 for 1 day Sep 25, '23
    $3.99 for 14 days Sep 11, '23
    $2.99 before Sep 11, '23

There was a discussion this a while back that the "sale" price is the actual price and isn't really going to $14.99; this is basically the new version of the "limited time/sold out" strategy used before. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad because that means I'll be able to get it on Friday, but it is a bit misleading

  • I have not tried it but the recently released Squarebeat may be down you alley. It is a auv3 tracker.
    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/squarebeat/id6464103210

  • I gotta look into this one too!

  • The new AudioThing app is brilliant. MiniBit it’s called. The audio Kit one too. The tracker mentioned above is also a really great one.

Some others: SunVox, both PixiTrackers, Squaresynth (maybe my favorite one), Sinusoid, and the IAP in PSP. Gadget is amazing for those too.
