SeekBeats v. 1.1.1 Update & Other Suggestions

SeekBeats was updated on 8/9/14. First update in some time and it now functions as an IAA instrument/generator, which is a big help.

But it got me thinking of some other maddening things about the app, which is otherwise fantastic. Is there really no way to audition sounds with a pad or preview button unless you are playing the sequence? Given that the strength of the app is designing synth drums, it seems nuts that you can't just trigger the sound to test it out, and you can't start it playing unless you are on a particular screen.

The sequence length was increased to 32 steps, which is also nice to throw in some variety or change time signatures. Just a few things that bother me from enjoying the app as much as I could - the sound design is awesome!

  • Pressing the "seq" button twice takes you to the pads. But you're right about SeekBeats needing to run for the pads to work, seems weird. You could choose an empty sequence slot if you have one, press play, and use the pads. But def would be better if you could play the pads even when it's not running.

  • I have 2 straight forward yet maddening things: no tap tempo and difficulty in dialing exact speed.

  • This is one of the coolest drum synths on iOS, I wish wish wish I could midi sequence it as IAA or Audiobus into my daw/sequencer of choice

If you tap once on the bpm, a popup comes up where you can type in an exact bpm.

  • Not for notes, clock only

  • That's the thing, no note midi. Now that Audiobus and IAA are implemented, and I can make tracks in my iOS daw using the full powers of the SeekBeats synth, I have no use for its onboard sequencer which is great but no match for sequencers in BM2 or MTS for iPad, where I can track each drum separately, sequence triplets etc etc.

  • Was/am v. put off by the 'no auditioning/must be playing' modality. Put it in my 'Not Yet Ready' folder. Was hoping the update would address this, but apparently not. Deal breaker. Or maker (if the developer is listening or has any suggestions).

  • Really want to externally sequence it as well. I love the internal sequencer and randomization stuff but for most things i'd rather have the control of a piano roll and the ability to sequence changes in long form ala song mode.

  • please tell the dev your wishes he's a very cool and receptive cat

  • I like receptive animals

Don't make it too easy for Paul please.

  • Been stuck on London m25 for the past hour. Any interaction will do

  • Meaningful or meaningless :-)

  • Seems like @PaulB is off line anyway or he's out of crackers?

Cool, thanks. I've missed this one. Tap tempo then, should be on the developers list already.

  • I've pointed the Dev at this thread. He seems a nice guy.

  • @rugoso is already on this forum.

  • IAA timing between this app and BM2 is really good. The last update has me focusing on this app again. Love it!

  • I can't use it in my set up because it is quite ram hungry but I'm programming some kicks, hats and snares in it to use elsewhere.

I've used it for the same. Make a kit of sounds, trigger them in the sequencer with fixed spaces between them and then into chop lab autoslicer in BM2.

  • @syrupcore
Cool interim move until I can program the synth and sequence into BM2 on the fly.
Am I wrong, or is this not only one of the best drum synths on iOS, (with IAA/Audiobus) it's the only one? (Except for the bread and butter synths that do drum sounds along with lead, bass, pads etc)

  • MoDrum, Robotic Drums, Stix, and iElectribe are AB, but not IAA.

    @CalCutta
    Thanks, good list.
These suggestions help focus what I like about SeekBeats, and remind me of what I am already able to do with Stroke Machine (which I'm now reminded may be the best iOS drum synth with IAA and Audiobus!) Stroke Machine has IAA, and a ultra tweak-able and midi sequence-able drum (and otherwise) synth

I like Modrum and iElectribe for their tweak-abilities but neither are as broad synthesis-wise as SeekBeats or Stroke Machine, and Stix is an odd one, full of cool sounds but isn't it truly a sample-based synth using (PCM?) wave samples, or draw-able waves (which is cool, and sounds cool, but is a different animal than the real time synthesis on offer in SeekBeats and Stroke Machine).

  • Yea Stix is samples. Not sure what to make of the drawing your own waveforms thing it does...It's a nice little rompler if you're looking for some lo if gritty nasty drums (depending on the current AppStore price I guess)

    @ChrisG
I like the sounds a lot, but the implementation is a bit spotty somehow, I kept downloading it then deleting it because it can be crashy, or opens but is silent and requires its reboot.

The custom wave bit reminds me of the draw-able waves in trackers, doodle a single cycle or something crazed...fun for sure

  • Hey everybody, SeekBeats developer here!

    thanks for all the feedback

I think the tap tempo should be easy to implement.

the pad thing was done this way cuz i wanted the stop button to stop all sounds (including long sounds or sounds that don't go to zero amplitude), i think there were also some battery considerations... but I agree that being able to play the pads is important so i'll add this somehow

and the midi note is sort of easy to implement, the thing is it will always have a small delay because of the audio buffer, that's why i'm not such a big fan of external sequencers for computer synths/samplers/drum machines (or iPad on this case), but sure i'll implement it, with the option to set the audio buffer to some small value to minimize this delay

    thanks for all the feedback!

  • Is it correct that there's no audiocopy from the app or did I miss this function alongside the BPM setting?

  • love seekbeats!
