Chordjam or Scaler 2?

What are the pros and cons of each, and which do you favour?

I'm looking to choose one of the two, for iPad and desktop. But I'm new to this type of app. I'm hoping to both create and learn from whichever I choose.

    I favor Scaler.
    ChordJam is great for randomization.
Scaler makes you a better musician by giving building blocks for songs and allowing you to apply different performance types.
Over time you improve as a player using it.
I find myself thinking in a more musical way since using Scaler.
Both plugins are great, I would say Scaler is more comprehensive.

This is what my instincts are telling me. There would be benefits to both for me. But learning / relearning is key to me at the moment.

Yeah, Scaler doubles as a learning tool - most interesting thing is that you don’t realize you are learning while you’re using it 🤯

Even better: you can try Scaler before you unlock everything 🤩

  • If you have scaler 2, buy chord jam. If you don't have scaler 2, buy scaler 2. I have scaler 2, so I bought chord jam, and it's great as part of a generative music setup. But Scaler 2 is simply amazing and I wouldn't want to be without it. I have it on PC and iPad both.

  • Scaler also lets you capture chord progressions from audio or MIDI. Like the incidental music in a TV show you are watching? Just hit the chord capture button to see what it identifies, use those as your building blocks to arrange a sequence you like and then away you go.

I love mining the audio world around me for interesting beginnings.

    I need to try this!

  • Also worth mentioning 4Pockets Progressions here, a really deep tool. Like almost all 4Pockets apps there are things that annoy me about the UI / UX, but it is an amazing chord generator nevertheless, and works in a different way to both chordjam and scaler 2

Yessir, I got this one too as well as ChordPolyPad

  • …although I use Scaler 99.7% of the time on iPad and desktop 😆

If learning is on your goalsheet, it's not even a fair comparison tbh. Scaler it is, hands down, all the way. Try (and see) before you buy.

Apple Music has music from Torchwood and the newish Dr. Who series. Some lovely chords to play with from those tracks, especially when arranged for totally different music styles. Play a track on the phone and chord harvest in Scaler 2 on iPad.

I didn't realise, but I already have ChordJam on my iPad, from before my 1 year hiatus away. So I can try it, and see if it's a viable investment to have it on desktop too, whilst it's on offer. Scaler 2, I have downloaded, and I'm confident the full purchase will be a wise investment on both iPadOS and MacOS.

I fear you have asked a much deeper question than intended. Allow me to paint a bit of context before my answer if you will.

You may agree that we have all become inundated, even jaded with great tech in the past decade. So much so that the term “gamechanger” has become water downed. Especially here on ABF where amazing yet affordable software is most rabidly celebrated by enthusiastic appoholics who pen billion word threads, fuel hype machines around the latest and greatest, etc etc.

From the first time I opened Scaler 2 I knew…this was not just another game changer. It was different. It was a Herculean effort keeping the impact that this software had on me to myself. I became a better songwriter, producer, keyboard and sax player, husband, father, Human—because of Scaler 2. True story lol.

Then, one fateful day ironically exactly one year ago the unthinkable occurred. A Scaler 2 dev tagged me on Scaler Forum to announce that my beloved was headed to iPad in a 1:1 port! 😱

At that point I knew it was time. I had to alert the masses here at home base. How could I convey such an extinction level event? I mean music theory, chorder apps, off key, boring and lifeless harmony and melody would never be the same. Dude.

I searched my soul before penning the announcement. I gathered proof, took a deep breath and shared this thread with the world this day last year:

    https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/49040/scaler-2-2022-gamechangier-ipad-port-out-now

The community was in an uproar. Those in the know clashed with skeptics. Skeptics became true believers. A term became minted and used in inside jokes forum wide bleeding over to the Tube. What is this gamechangier app you speak of and even more…wtf is gamechangier bro?

    In two words… Scaler 2.

    As for Chordjam. It’s cool.

Like all latest gen Audiomodern apps, it shares a simple, familiar, playable and aesthetically pleasing interface. It can aid in song creation and has a unique approach to finding and sequencing chords.

In my humblest opinion, there is really no comparing the two apps. Deciding which to purchase really just comes down to the type of impact you want a chorder to have on your workflow.

Do you want a cool, explorative addition to your music theory tool box (Chordjam)? I have no doubt that you’ll be satisfied with your purchase and enjoy using the app well enough. Will it improve, boost or change your songwriting ability. Probably not. The randomizer will help you come up with things you wouldn’t have though.

Or, do you want an absolute impact on your entire musical being (Scaler 2)?

You will indeed become much better at songwriting, harmony, melody, expression if you invest $20 and consistent time in S2. You will likely become a better human for it. Dare I say, you will become…Gamechangier yourself.

In conclusion.lol. If you do purchase Scaler 2, I recommend starting your journey with @sfm Scaler tutorials here:

Thanks so much for the link, and the glorious adventure in your words! :D

  • One question that I'm not sure is answered here, mostly because I haven't asked it yet, is — what app might I install on my iPhone to get similar benefits on my phone? I wish there was a Scaler for iPhone. I could do with this kind of magic in my pocket wherever I go.

  • I've loaded and bought the full Scaler 2 package on iPad, and am already learning so much. I will definitely get it for my laptop too, as soon as I am able.

Tonality!!! And with the new update you can import scaler 2 chordsets!! Just did a video on it:

Doctor Who ended with the last Capaldi episode.
    Which is incredibly sad.

Ahh…but the music director just keeps getting better.

Also potentially interesting is soundtrack stuff from the show Avenue Five. The music guy for that show is really innovative.

I do think that for chord or tonality mining, TV soundtracks often have more freedom to try new things than producers in other areas can get away with.

  • The only one thing I dislike about Scaler on iPad is the app size… 1.2GB is way too much imho
