Sub bass
What would be my options for sub bass on iOS? I'm thinking Agonizer would have me covered, would I be right?
This is the sound of the kind of sub bass I'm looking for…

I like samples. Or anything that can create a sine wave.
One tip is to take a bass sound you like, cut off the sub frequencies with EQ, and add in a sine wave. Dirty that sine wave up until it also works on smaller speakers. And cut the lowest lows out, even on the sub, so the speakers don’t waste energy trying to reproduce sounds you can’t even hear.
This might be an interesting app for eq/controlling basses https://apps.apple.com/nl/app/bass-enhancer/id1508482793
I think you can get a subbase out of a lot of synths. I currently made one from the free Bleass Monolit. But controlling a subbase is the hardest part, takes me a lot of tweaking eq/compressor to avoid overpowering.
I suspect you have skills I am yet to develop.
That's the tricky bit. I'll check out the app link.
Are there any eq apps you might recommend, especially cross-platform apps (iPadOS, iOS, MacOS)?
You can try the Bass controller for free btw, I love all RedRock apps, they’re top quality.
I can’t tell about cross platform, I switched to iOS music making 100%
I can't find it in the app store. Any clues?
I use layering
Sometimes up to three different synths (more usually two though) and very often one of them will be a fairly nondescript bass guitar patch from iM1 or iWavestation that acts as reinforcement for the others
That way they can also be compressed differently — which was nice
Search for "RRS Bass enhancer", I think that's what the colleague means
Ah, that's the one I downloaded, following the earlier comment, I thought he meant another app. Thanks!
Also try just bass enhancer then. This is what you are looking for:
It should be available in the UK store...
Don’t know about cross platform (sorry) but I’ve been using this in iOS since its release:
https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/bass-mint/id1638381373
They have it for the desktop as a separate app, but very often on sale with huge discounts on plugin alliance (like all unfiltered audio stuff)
I wonder how this compares with the RedRock Bass Enhancer, which is half de price.
Nice, thanks.
Thanks. I'll take a look.
Yes, the prices are very high on the desktop versions. I was lucky to buy the iOS versions when they were on launch discount. I'll look out for a discount online for the VSTs.
Poison 202 does a surprisingly nice sub bass.
How does it compare to Agonizer?
sure thing. in the meantime, you can get a "used" license of Bass mint (perfectly legally) on knobcloud.com for 6 USD + the transfer fee which I think is prob 20. that's if you don't want to wait a for the next sale, likely some time soon
I was on the impression that sub bass should always be a sinewave or at least a very simple wave, so just layer it? That means get whatever synth that makes a simple sine and hi pass the “real” bass from 60Hz up (or what you need) and copy the midi on both so they do the same thing.
In that way you can have a clean sub and a more complex bass tone
Personally I've never been that happy with sub bass from Agonizer, I tend to go for Zeeon or the Synthmasters, but was pleasantly surprised by Poison's too.
Thanks, that's helpful.
Thank you.
That's a pretty good deal! I use Knobcloud, so am happy to buy there.
The simplest method is probably BASSalicious, some great sub presets in there. Mess with the legato settings to customise it to your bass pattern (if there’s overlapping notes)
I tend to use Zeeon or Alpha, though as mentioned above Poison202 is also good
There’s a sub preset in the Saga app. I used it on the track I posted earlier today, you can check it in the Creations thread. I doubled up with a more audible Don’t know if it’s earthquake-y enough for you, but I liked it…
Thanks, I'll take a look.
AudioKit Bass 808 might be worth looking at, also you can get some really low stuff out of MiRack, and FX wise UA Bass Mint is worth trying. And Agonizer is built for the job. NB I’m not an expert on this!
Examples: check my YouTube channel (username - bygjohnuk) for the following Jamuary days -
19 - Bass 808
24 - MiRack
26 - UA Bass Mint doing its thing to a DFAM
29 - Agonizer
I've been exploring AK808, yes.
I hadn't thought of MiRack. What is a DFAM?
My first thought was Agonizer, but there's been little response to that aspect of my question until you came along.
DFAM (Drummer From Another Mother) is a Moog semi-modular “percussion synthesiser” (same family and form factor as the Mother-32 and Subharmonicon, ie technically it can be a whopping huge Eurorack module). Not really a drum machine, as it’s not got a lot of what you’d expect from a trad drum machine - it has other strengths, particularly when interpatched with other patchable instruments. Bram Bos’s Ruismaker Noir is loosely based on/inspired by it, if you’re familiar with that. Mylar Melodies on YouTube has a really good video on it called “A love letter to the Moog DFAM”.
I suppose people tend to think of it mainly for those noisy/aggressive wub-wub bass sounds, but it’s capable of less wild stuff. I haven’t used it a huge amount, I confess.
