Analog style sequencer for iphone

Sliders, like the arp sequencer,
I’m using synth one , but the sequencer is a bit limited, not terrible.

But I’d love a list of apps that are like this for both the iPhone and iPad for quick idea chasing

Thanks

Btw, the Triadex muse web site is wonderful, great Java based version, only wish it was for the iPad as well

Thanks

  • I'm not going to mention the name but...
    It's doable.

The Triadex Muse could be recreated and the sliders for sequencing notes,
cut off etc can also be done, well anything that can be modulated really.

    Here's an example.

    I think that's one. 😂

Wim's suggestion for MiRack is a good one though I must say.
The combination of the two is quite something.

If only I could wrap my simple mind around miRack though. Another topic, another day. I do like tinkering around in the app whose name shall not be mentioned as I can wrap my simple mind around that one well enough.

Then again, I fancy myself more of a beatmaker these days, but I still muck about with the odd live Ambient jam in AUM now and again. Now that I have Twin 3, I'm inspired to go back to Ambient for my personal works while still producing beats professionally.

In No particular order, I only listed Au apps. Are you mostly looking to sequence synths? Or everything

rozeta - it has a Xox type drum sequencer, Arp Au , bassline Au, and a few other great ones. 10 au apps inside one app. Maybe 5-6 are different sequencers.
Polybud - basically like multiple stepbuds in one
    Stepbud - step sequencer
    Chord Bud - chord sequencer
Mozaic - has a bunch of great sequencer scripts on Patchstorage. Basic to more experimental.
    Drambo - bunch on Patchstorage
All the 4Pockets sequencers have randomize. Midi strummer, Digikeys, Digistix 2, etc…
Step Poly Arp - a beast and very deep, should at least be in the mix. I think it works on both devices.
Piano Rolls are sequencers - Atom 2, LK, Helium, etc…
Pure acid is a Groovebox and a midi sequencer, has a Xox style for drums and a bassline sequencer
More experimental stuff - Zoa Riffer, etc…

I’m a big fan of sequencing, and there are a lot of them available. i think it might help if you mention what you were looking to sequence. I see you mentioned a synth… Some are better at drums some both, some leads, som bass

OH NO! The app whose name shall not be mentioned was mentioned! 😂

(Joking, all of what you listed above are amazing. I'm definitely fond of Zoa, Riffer, Ioniarics, etc for more experimental sequencing.)

What I really like about MiRack are the oscillators , filters and effects.
I leave the shaping to dRambo and outboard now that
there isn't a track limit anymore in dRambo.

Im just looking for a simple slider based app that mimics an analog sequencer. With control over gate time. Extras are welcome. But I mainly just want to play around and come up with melodies to use in the real world on real machines. Don't really care about what it sounds like. A simple square wave with an envelope will do. Extras like locking to certain scales would be great, too.

StepBud fits your description the best.
midiDREAMs is excellent, and somewhat simpler, but iPad only.

Neither makes any sound though. You send midi out of them to play other apps.

I thought that privilege was Snuvox

  • Some of the Korg synths have sequencers with knobs instead of sliders, if I remember correctly. Ms-20 for example.

  • Analog style would be (repeating some options mentioned above, but focused on your request)

Quantum (preferable over midisequencer because you have more racks)
    https://apps.apple.com/app/quantum-sequencer/id1207932898

    MidiSequencer (cheaper than quantum)
    https://apps.apple.com/app/midisequencer/id787934896

    MidiDreams (the Audio Unit option)
    https://apps.apple.com/app/mididreams/id1553799788

Little Midi Step Sequencer (was free, not sure if still available)
    https://apps.apple.com/app/little-midi-machine/id394018004
    http://syntheticbits.com/littlemidi.html

Phaedra (pretty sure it's unavailable lol, having some issues checking here)

    Sliders, like the arp sequencer

In that case ARP ODYSSEi is an option (with a great sounding VA as bonus)

  • There’s an app called......Anilog which I’ve heard good things about if you’re into that sort of thing

    Anilog is rather cool.
I've had fun with that one as well.

  • damn, cool stuff. Thank you

  • I def want an internal sound engine. Not interested in midi sequencing. I need flow . Just a little app to play with ideas. It’s so disappointing that some of these have no sound, I was going to go with quantum, but it’s only midi I believe.
What is the best one? I don’t need more than 16 sliders. Or even 12, but timing and other stuff added is what I’m looking for.

  • And doesn’t cost more than 10 dollars, I’m not looking for some huge app. Just more features than I get in synth one’s sequencer, but closely resembling it

There are very few synths that have a built-in sequencer, and even fewer that have the analog/slider style you're looking for, if any at all. Even ODESSYi mentioned above doesn't have many of the features you're looking for other than the sliders.

  • It honestly isn't that hard to hook up a sequencer to a synth in a host like Audiobus or AUM. And you only have to do it once, then save that as a session/preset for instant recall.

If you don't have a host app then yes, it's more trouble than a standalone app with a built-in sequencer.

  • edited February 2023

For me, since you asked for a sequencer, I thought midi sequencer too automatically  Maybe i'm old fashioned.

Anyway, I'm with @wim on this one. With a dedicated sequencer you'll probably have more power on your hands with more wiggle room regarding sound. (For example I have a template with Quantum and BS-16i for sketching phrases)

BUT... Since you may want something quick and dirty to play with ideas, I would guess the best option would be Chordflow
    http://apps.apple.com/app/chordflow/id1219789464

Second option is TuneMaker from the same dev
    http://apps.apple.com/app/tune-maker-compose-music/id1489705836

For your needs, Chordflow would be ideal. Not sliders, but you can draw the flow of your melody with points or lines (longer notes), on a track for melody and other for chords and whatnot. Really fun and fast to try out stuff

Unfortunately, Dmitry's sites are offline, and that's an awkward sign. One that makes me wanna backup his apps through iMazing

  • A sequencer by definition doesn’t make sound, it sequences other things that make sound, so there’s no point being disappointed, that’s how sequencers are – they read out a set of values over time, that’s what a sequencer does

If you want to hear sound, try a synth or something, and control it with a sequencer

One that I like is Korg’s iMS-20, which is a synth, and includes a sequencer
    https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/korg-ims-20/id401142966

  • Yeah, it takes a matter of seconds to hook up a sequencer to a synth. My advice would be: just get the best midi sequencer for your needs and forget about whether it has internal sounds or not.

  • Thanks everyone.
Im not new to sequencing. But I am new to the iPhone being used this way. So I dont know much about multiple apps open and linking them internally.
Can I play Synth One with quantum?
Chordflow looks very cool,. I have suggester on my iPad. I'll have to check them all out. I have to be frugal at the moment. But this is a great thread I'll be coming back to, Thank you
