What apps would you use to create music like this on iOS?

I have a love of listening to generative ambient modular music, and particularly love this guy's creations:

What techniques and apps might I explore to create something in this kind of sound direction?

Obviously, miRack, and I'm sure someone will suggest Drambo soon, but what else? I was thinking of Xynthesizr too, but I'm wondering what sound sources/synths I might look to? What else?

It's not my main genre, but something I've long wished to explore, for the sheer delight of it.

  • Audulus 4
You could build all of this with terra pro (semi-modular) and external sequencers.
Or use mi-rack midi in AUM to play synth…maybe back into miRack Audi effects or other effect apps.
    I don’t like Drambo that much, because I can’t get into it😅

  • A good spacey reverb app will do more than 1/2 of the heavy lifting… EOS2 is where I start for these large spaces.
    A good selection of synths…

Tera Pro with the BrainZ IAP can cover a massive range of synth technologies including Modular approaches and do the
    Strings and such.

I’d start with those 2 in AUM using the AUM keyboard to trigger notes and record the results.

  • Sequencer of choice (low probability on most notes) + really slow tempo + shimmer reverb (maybe another pitch shifter/harmonized as well) + huge reverb

Multiple LFOs to modulate some of the shimmer and secondary pitch shifter parameters, as well as sequencer gate or adsr parameters on synth.

Never actually tried this myself, but this is my best guess from watching Andrew Huang and Jeremy Blake do this lol

I've begun my miRack journey, and VCV Rack too, on desktop, but I haven't done more than open and close Audulus. I always feel a little lost in there.

I love your daring honesty about Drambo!

I'm actually looking for a sequencer too. What would be your suggestions for that?

As I said to @DarkAum3o I love your honesty too!

  • I haven’t collected too many iOS sequencers (because Drambo covers most of it  ), but Euclidean by 4pockets May be a good one. It has some good random features, gate control, velocity and probability. It also can accept chord changes from another app, like scaler, if you really wanted things to evolve over time.

  • Again, I’ve never tried this and I’m no expert. But after suggesting that combo of apps, especially scaler 2 and eulclidean at low tempo, I’m super pumped to try this out!

  • For me the fun in modular is dreaming up the generative part of the patch. (I’m far less interested in synthesis.) So were I to take on this project, I’d build that sequencing part myself in MiRack rather than farm it out to an app.

    Brilliant! I'm happy you're inspired!

That makes total sense too. I guess I like to look at this both ways around, to get to the root of what I'm loving about this and why.

  • Probably the opposite of what you want to hear but there are honestly tons of ways to get this sound. A sequencer like Autony into virtually any synth (but especially one with good plucked sounds like in the video) with a reverb like Alteza or EOS would do the trick. Or if you want a cheaper modular synth, KQ MiniSynth through said reverbs and sequencer would also work.

Xynthesizer can definitely handle the task though I’d say.

  • Low BPM, generative sequencer and shimmer reverb

That's all definitely what I want to hear.

Sounds easy. But I suspect there's a little more to it, if I'm creating it at least. 😊

  • Yep, a long good reverb is more than half of the story, I agree with @McD.
The rest can be done with one, I repeat, one simple polyphonic synth, no matter which one you prefer.
No need for a modular system at all here.

I have a nice stable of good ambient friendly reverbs. But I hear more than just bleeps, bloops and reverb in this.

The drones sound like from a standard synth too.
The plucked sounds could also be a guitar if your favorite synth doesn't come close.

  • I would use Bram Bos particles as midi source controlling modal (in the spectrum bundle) going through FAC Alteza. All in Aum.

Describe what you hear which usually means an instrument and we can recommend a way to get those sounds: Korg Module Pro is a good for coverage.

    BeatHawk has good IAP options.

    Pure synth platinum

ThumbJam is amazing but is IAA which means it opens in a window outside AUM and is limited to one instance.

  • Decent Sampler is free with samples available for free at PianoBook.co.uk

ROLI noise has IAP packs of high quality.

Here's a simple & quick example feeding first the drone, then the plucks into a reverb.

  • Yep, as others have said nothing too complex going on here. I think you would really like sqsl Temp as your main semi generative sequencer. Sorry I haven't got round to making a video on that yet lol. It now finally has a save presets function BTW. Tera Pro with the IAPs - tons of great presets covering a huge variety of sounds. Decent Sampler as McD says for lots of great plucked sounds. Some kind of lfo - MMM by GS DSP - on open beta at the moment would be an excellent choice. Then a big reverb of your choice. Alteza, for example.

Or just let Wotja generate pieces for you, making some tweaks here and there. You could churn out hours of this kind of thing with very little effort. The only effort with Wotja is that the manual and menu interface are pretty off-putting for most users.

  • AUM, Drambo, Some granular synth (Quanta is here), MPE controls (WoodTroller, for example) for live touches and many strange reverbs and delays....

I’m looking forward to trying the sqsl apps. They’re right up my alley but I can’t afford them just yet. Seconded on DS through MMM and Alteza. Stratosphere is also great for that, imo.

Also how is the manual for Wotja? I desperately want to get into it but man every time I open it up I immediately get overwhelmed.

Same lol. I just let it generate stuff basically and have a very minimal understanding of how to tweak it. Great app, extemely detailed manual, just a very uninviting UI for me.

I think the Beatcutter manual put me off reading very detailed manuals for life, I just don't have the patience for it any more in the way that I used to 😂

  • To me it’s the Mutable Instruments sound + massive Clouds what really stands out here... I would definitely go with miRack

set this up in literally 2 minutes including re-downloading alteza :)

  • You offloaded Alteza!! Sacrilege!
