Spacefields and alternatives for Mac
I'm looking for something similar for desktop, but couldn't find anything.
I saw that Spacefields is now available for MacOS. But I can't find where to download it, plus, I'm not on Apple silicone, so it might not be possible for me.
What else might work on Mac for me like Spacefields?
Comments
SpaceFields is one of the very few apps that work on my M1 Mac, though I usually have to load it in twice (the first one crashes out in Live).
I just downloaded it from my purchases list.
the only thing that comes closer is a vcv rack 2 (free) module.

vcv rack 2 as standalone is free - but as plugin is payware.
enjoy.
Not the same as Spacefields but great ambient tools : Tracktion/Dawesome Abyss and Novum.

https://www.tracktion.com/products/novum
@andowrites Ableton would be great for that. Worth sticking with it for sure.
I like Unfiltered Audio Byome and Triad for the kind of thing that I do on space fields — evolving ambient mangling that responds to incoming audio. They are both incredibly deep and flexible but easy to get started with.
I'm lucky to have received Abyss as a gift. Novum is on my wishlist, and I'm running the 90 day trial. Lovely plugins, both.
Ah, I didn't realise that I had to pay to use it as a plugin. I have the free standalone version. I also have miRack, but I haven't explored it for more than a few hours, a couple of years back.
Most of the time now, I'm wishing I had Apple Silicon. I bought my MacBook Pro just as the M1 was released. But it's my work machine, and my old one had completely failed, and I wasn't in a position to wait out the order period for the M1 version, so bought the Intel.
But next time, Apple Silicon it will be.
This Spacefields thing is frustrating though, I would love to have it on my laptop.
I'm sticking with it so far. A friend gave me an 8 track license for BitWig, but I haven't clicked with it in general. I love Ableton, but I'm having some major bugginess with it. However, support are hanging in there with me, and trying to get to the root of the issues. It's something Intel Mac specific, and they have only a handful of reports of it, but they're now working on a solution, trying to get a test machine setup. It's a little frustrating, but I'm happy with the support.
In what ways would you/I be using Ableton to address this question of replacing Spacefields?
Something I didn't say at the start of this thread, was that I have been inspired by the sounds of the Soma Laboratories Cosmos, and so started looking to how I could get something similar in software. I read somewhere that SpaceFields would fill that slot on my laptop, as well as iPad. I already had the iPad version, so came here to ask for ideas about using SpaceFields or alternatives, on the MacOS.
So to broaden my question, what software plugins might be a suitable replacement for a Soma Laboratories Cosmos?
Yeah I bought an Intel 16" MBP when my work PC died a shortly before the silicon laptops turned up. Never mind - still a great machine!
Definitely recommend the Mini's if you're in the market for a desktop, the prices are pretty reasonable considering.
Hmmm, that's interesting, haven't installed the new version on my Intel laptop, but notice the copy on my M1 desktop is occasionally buggy.
Apart from various options using built-in devices, I'd recommend to start here:
https://maxforlive.com
You'll find a huge amount of free M4L devices on various subjects like loopers, granular, synths, effects, rhythmic tricks, generative and classic sequencers etc etc.
Just search for "looper" there and your evening will be gone
Ah yes, Max for Live. I currently only have Live 11 Intro, so I would need to upgrade to Live 11 Standard, and buy Max for Live to add to it.
@andowrites not to spur on your apparently full blow GAS (gear acquisition syndrome) - or knowledge seeking, but I bought Novum and KULT (both Tracktion products by the Dawsome dev). They are awesome! Tracktion has frequent enough sales - to wit I got KULT for 70ish dollars on saint patricks day.
To the OG point of this thread - while Novum is ambient in nature it is NOT like Spacefeilds. Not much is. Spacefields can take any noise and generate continuously evolving atmospheres (mostly through modulation and reverbs). It is unique.
My GAS is actually BAS. Birthday acquisition syndrome.
My partner is buying me an OP-Z (or, if the third one is a dud, the black box of my choice). Software and app purchases are with birthday money from friends and family. This year's birthday is devoted to music making. I feel very lucky, as generally, I don't have two pennies to rub together.
I love Abyss, which was an NFR gift that I received, and I would dearly love Novum, when I can get it at a better price. At least I have the 90 day free trial (I like it so much, I've been using the demo, holding off on starting the 90 day trial, but next week, I will trigger it). I have the demo of Kult, but haven't clicked with it so much so far. But your comment leaves me feeling inspired to dig back into it.
Re: the original point, which was to find some kind of soundscape generator, it's a real shame that there's so far, nothing to take the place of SpaceFields, unless I had an M1 Mac. I won't give up hope, and have begun to look at how I can create some kind of soundscape generator, with a chain of tools in Ableton. I need to pop my thinking cap on. And keep asking questions here, because I'm learning so much from the kind hearted forum members here. I'm ever grateful for you all.
Ah, I nearly bought one of those two in the recent sale. Perhaps they will come back on sale again.
You might just be better off capturing scapes you make with Spacefields on iOS, than search for an almost-ran. If I'm correct, you just bought Tal-Sampler, and you already have access to 'Simpler' via Ableton. So either you can record scapes the entire length of what you're writing, then export and pate into the project as audio, ooorrrr just make shorter clips, bung 'em into a sampler and choose some point at which to set up a loop. Or you could just print the shorter audio loops, cross-faded, across the entire track and use track automation within Ableton to keep things evolving.
It might be harder to find a time when they aren't on sale
Also, Novum goes on sale a few times a year, with best prices normally via jrrshop (Often they have a price similar to other shops, and sometimes have a little extra in-cart discount).
I was wondering that just now. In fact, I dropped back to ask if there's a way I can feed audio into Ableton from SpaceFields on my iPad?
And yes, I absolutely love TAL Sampler, and have been thinking I could do something along the lines of what you're suggesting. TAL really works like my brain works.
Thanks for your suggestions. My next steps are to dive deeper into Ableton… I need to up my knowledge and skillz. Best done in my case by hands on exploration and experimentation (I've never been much of a manual reader, unfortunately, although I'm learning!).
Sorry, I thought you were using Live Suite already.
No worries though, I think something like SpaceFields could be done in an Ableton rack using Simpler, Looper, Reverb, Grain Delay and maybe Beat Repeat - all part of Live Intro.
Well that's good news.
I was thinking more along the lines of rendering out files, then using Airdrop or Drobbox to transfer them over to the Mac. But streaming via audio is another option, ad will allow you to perform your audio. Just connect via IDAM:
I think digging yourself deep int Ableton will help tremendously. Not only do i think you could do with a hub where all these disparate ideas can converge and be arranged. But I think you'll come to realise that so much of what you want to achieve, stylistically-speaking,(save for very specific niche workflows) can be done in Ableton. From there, you can use all these iPad trinkets as ways of generating ideas and 'fodder' for your main 'squeeze'
Also, have you considered a full-video course? Groove 3, macProVideo/AskVideo/ADSR etc. and many other places have courses that you can follow from start-to-finish. The structure might help.
Try this for a start.

Add Simpler, an Audio Effect Rack and a Reverb.
Add a few Grain Delays to the Audio Effect Rack and dial in different pitches and 100% wet setting in each, then hit Freeze in the Reverb.
You can have multiple tracks like this and fade them in/out as needed.
Wonderful, thank you!
Thank you. I will take a look.
Caveat: I haven’t done this and so don’t know the details, but is there any mileage in connecting the iPad to the Mac using a USB cable and using IDAM (i thunk that’s the name of it) to pipe audio in and out, so you could use SpaceFields in conjunction with your DAW? Or is IDAM only one-way?
What did I tell ya
Big sale started today. Byome and Triad, both at $39
https://www.plugin-alliance.com/en/products.html
I just spotted it, I'm on there now. I also have a $25 loyalty voucher. One question, I thought that Triad was Byome's big brother, and does all that Byome does, and more. Is that not correct?
That's what I was wondering, but I think IDAM is only one way. But surely there must be a way to run SpaceFields from the iPad into Ableton? There must be some interface/routing option to do this?
Alternatively, I need to create soundscapes on my iPad, then import in as audio files into my DAW.
