Song Of The Month Club - April 2023

What is the Song of the Month Club?

It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.

The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.

The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow and improve and correct their mistakes.

All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. We like all kinds of music and we are particularly fond of vocals (but of course we still love a great instrumental). If you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.

We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material

And finally, iOS is not a requirement for posting here. If you've recorded your song using nothing but a ukulele and a Fostex 4 track, that's fine.

  • My entry for the month, lyrics in the spoiler:

    Hold me, help me
Spend some time alone with me
    You don’t know I’m fading
    You can’t see me waiting

    But you know
    You know where we are
    And you say
We can’t get to go all that far

    But I
I can’t see the stars in the sky
I’m half blind and I don’t know why

    What, and how?
    Can you help me now?
We can’t relive the pain we tasted
We can’t live those days again

Show me, so I can see
    Something hopeful something sweet
    You can keep me waiting
    Although I’m hesitating

    But you know
    You know what we say
    And you pray
We can’t get to go all that way

You can wish the pain away
But it will come back anyway
    Accept that you are grieving
With hope you can start healing

But in the end, in disarray
We'll try to meet our fate halfway
As long as we keep breathing
    We have to keep believing

I actually have something nearly finished so I'll chime in this month. Not happy with the mix, yet again, but it's getting close to "can't be bothered tweaking any more".

  • @richardyot I don't know how people do this but it seems so many people make a full sound without much in the arrangement. This sounds full and clear. Some U2 guitar vibes in the intro. Very sweet (as in pleasant and easy to listen to) sounding song.

  • @richardyot good solid track again - I am also getting the U2 guitar vibe which is very effective. I suspect you know exactly the sound you are going for, but I was wanting the drums to be punching more on this one - as I say, I think that’s personal preference. I played the song through twice and by the end of the second play it’s well and truly sticking - another catchy number!

Nice! A really heavy track that doesn't overwhelm the senses and still has a great sense of melody.

The vocal is really good, excellent performance, and the guitar playing is really tight. I love the guitar solo at the end, it's exciting and very enjoyable. Great job.

  • @Ailerom woah - the mix sounds great to me. Everything is crystal clear and where it should be. From personal experience I know it’s difficult to know when to stop tweaking, but I honestly can’t see where it’s lacking. Good to hear some rock music, I loved it. The wah wah guitar solo was great - could have been longer for me! The vocals are delivered with attitude - great performance.

Thanks! In all honestly with guitars I find you have to be very careful to not add too many other instruments into the arrangement, because the guitar (especially if it's distorted) already takes up so much of the frequency spectrum. The problem I usually have is to get the vocal and the reverb (which I always use quite heavily) to not add too much mud in the lower-mids. I filter the reverb and also do a bit of EQ ducking on the guitars to help fix this problem.

Thanks! I'll have another listen to the mix to check the drums, but of course there is always a problem with balancing the guitars, drums, and vocals depending on which element is more important stylistically. I'm always grateful for unbiased opinions from fresh ears though.

With no obvious candidate this month, I hope it’s ok to share a track from my 2019 album Golden Years called The More I Learn. This song was significant for me in that I started to use my DAW beyond simply recording voice, guitars, drums and conventional keyboards - a year or so before discovering iOS and extending those possibilities greatly.

Fed up with being an angry old man shouting at politicians on the telly, I thought I’d write a song about it 😂

I'm interested to know track counts. I will update but from memory my track has about 35, although vocals for chorus/verse are on separate tracks.

32 tracks going into 6 groups (drums, bass, music verse vox, chorus vox, outro vox), and 2 reverb sends (tracks 33 and 34)

  • @richardyot Well maybe that explains the full sound. Plenty going on there.

  • This is a music track that I improvised on two MIDI keyboards connected to an iPad.

I used Bome Network software to send the iPad's MIDI notes to Bitwig Studio running on a desktop PC. There the MIDI was routed to Omnisphere, ZebraHZ, and Alchemy for the musical instruments.

After bringing the audio recording into Vegas Pro, I applied the Lurssen Mastering Console plug-in to the audio mix.

    It's titled Reentry.

I found the plucked thingamabob a bit over the top. Apart from that, what a mix! So well done. Perfect guitar tone for this song. Has a great optimistic vibe to the music without even listening to the lyrics. Not sure if that was intentional but if it was, that's a great talent. I usually have to write vocals in response to the music/mood I accidentally created.

    Alchemy? Huh, what hey how!?!

I can never make music like this. I don't have the patience. Beautiful layering. I love it when there is a full sound but I can hear everything. I think that gets harder when dealing with atmospheric creations. I really enjoyed the lower tones so more of those would have been pleasing to my ears. I feel a bit like I just floated through space for 6 minutes, although it felt longer. I reckon this would be superb listening in one of those relaxation chamber things.

That’s kind of you to listen and comment, thank you. This track (and album) was mixed and mastered by Paul Boyd so I can’t take credit for the mix, but having said that, I learnt so much from Paul sharing his methods with me that I was able to mix and master my subsequent albums myself and get results I was pleased with.

Good song with a strong arrangement, some nice musical hooks and a great vocal melody and lyrics. The mix is a bit clean for my (subjective) taste, I would rather hear less separation in all the instruments and some more aggressive compression and more distortion on the guitars to help convey the anger and emotion - for me a super-detailed and well-separated mix can sound a bit sterile and lacking in excitement - but again this is subjective and probably more to do with my taste than anything.

Mix preferences aside this is a very well-written song backed by excellent performances.

  • @richardyot good perspective. I don’t really do grungy (probably not the right word) - you are 100% correct, it’s personal preference but my aim is always to have a mix that is super clean so you can hear everything. Thanks for listening and your comments!

  • @DavidEnglish this one is chilled out even by your own standards! And your standards are always top drawer - beautifully created and produced , professional soundscapes

  • Three great tracks @richardyot , @Ailerom and @BillS .
As somebody who can’t hold a note to save my life I’m in awe of all of you 🙏 Production values are tremendous as well.
Also enjoyed the brief Wah guitar solo, could have been longer 🎸
I’m not ignoring David, I commented on his (as usual) sublime track on his original post 😊

  • @GeoTony aw thank you kind sir. Don’t put yourself down, what I’ve heard from you is fantastic!

  • Ha, you haven’t heard me sing @BillS 😢

Thanks for listening. It's hard to know how to find the right solo length these days. Somewhere between guitar fill and guitar wankery seems tough to find. I love long solos but it seems most people don't. I tend to stop when I think I am soloing for the sake of it or the ideas are running out. Seems I could have extended thins one though.

  • @Ailerom I’m up for listening to long guitar solos! There are a million to choose from of course but something like the last 3 minutes of Best of Times by Dream Theater is up there with the best music ever written in my book 😀

  • edited April 2023

@BillS That was awesome. Almost as awesome as the last three minutes of this: ;) from 3.36

  • @Ailerom that was entertaining 😂

  • I must listen to more Dream Theatre @BillS , not sure why I don’t. It was all done by Jordan Rudess on an iPad with GeoShred you know 🤨
To be honest @Ailerom I couldn’t concentrate on the music , the video was far too distracting 😊
Anyway here is my attempt this month, far fewer notes than last month !

  • @BillS @GeoTony To be honest I only realised there was a film clip when I search the song for this thread. I've only ever listened to the audio so my eyes were closed listening to it. Yes, it is a bit distracting now I look at it.
