The age of it not being OK to say what you really think. 😐
I think it started about the time disagreeing with someone became "hating on" them.
When did stating an opinion begin to be assumed to be pushing your opinion on others? It'd be great if stating an opinion could instead seen as an opportunity for a lively discussion.

I think society is pushing out more and more useful dialog as it becomes less and less acceptable to have a strong opinion. I'm vastly guilty of that myself, but trying to train myself not to be.

+1. Related to this, I’m getting tired of the default position of “all art is subjective” which is really just a way to shut down any critical discussion. It may be ultimately true, but it’s also a bit lazy and unrevealing. I personally see Beato’s position as someone who values the niceties of songwriting craft and critiques music from that standpoint. While I find that POV can be limiting, I understand where he’s coming from.

  • Rick Beato got famous because of the Apple rant? I thought he was in Goodfellas!!

That’s why The internet is so fascinating. I see it as a circus ring. Folks putting out stuff, others responding, reacting, whatever. Almost no objectivity, an old good pie fight over absolutely anything.

Ricky boy made a video about top 10 songs on Spotify expecting to be blown away by artistry? Nah, he knew it’s going to be pulp and he knew he’d generate a lot of clicks with it, it’s called entertainment. While folks in the 80’s would get high watching one way tv stuff, now we get to react, respond, express opinions.

I expect you need to be ultra cynical, analytical, emotionless to see through this. I’m just astounded that so many peeps get so emotionally involved in this? I guess it’s fun…

That will suffice for an explanation.

Rick Beato included Afternoon Delight and Seasons In The Sun in his "one hit wonders of the seventies" video. Then he sat there listening to both songs and pointing his finger to the beats like he was enjoying it. I watched a grown man with headphones on listen to Afternoon Delight. That is some low bar entertainment right there.

He failed to include some songs that popped right into my head, even though it's an era before my time. Like Patti Smith Because The Night. He rocked out to "but the stars that we reach are just starfish on the beach" instead.

I don't share his taste. Mostly I find his old guy opinion predictable, and so pretty boring. That's why I only watch if I'm working out and can't think of anything else to YouTube.

Everyone’s entitled their own opinion of course, but I appreciate his analysis and (more recently) his interviews. He never dumbs down his content and treats the music he features and the guests he has on with respect.

Frankly, I’m shocked to see such negative comments about him here. The guy has done more for music education over the past ten years or so than anyone else I can think of.

    I’ve never heard of him.

Almost 3.5 million subscribers on his YouTube account and he's visited by the top musicians in the world to discuss their craft. Why do you think you haven't you heard of him?

I really don’t know. He hasn’t been suggested in my YouTube feed. Maybe he doesn’t make the music I do.
Edit: just looked him up and his content seems rock based. Now I know why!

The older I get, the more the discussion on "objective musical quality" gets lost on me. Music enjoyment is inherently subjective. There are no objective variables on quality when it comes to personal taste and enjoyment. There are quantitative, objective elements that might matter to different people but how

You should check out the book that @ExAsperis99 (and myself) recommend. It brings some solid theory about this, a very good read.

A really interesting take on the subject of "terrible music" is a book by Carl Wilson (not that one) for the 33 1/3 series. He wrote about Celine Dion's "Let's Talk About Love."

It's been expanded to include other essays. "Let's Talk About Love: Why Other People Have Such Bad Taste."

His background is jazz guitar improv, then a long teaching career.

He also does a lot of videos related to jazz and music theory. Recently, he did an extensive interview with Keith Jarrett and last year a a great one with Pat Metheny. There are some great videos breaking down certain soloists styles or analyzing particular solos.

Well, once again it's a number of pop songs measured against Rick's personal preferences.

    Is it though?

He loves a guitar solo. I (generally) hate guitar solos.

The point being it’s him pontificating with his own preferences as his reference point - like all of his videos.

As it happens, I don’t necessarily disagree with his conclusions in this particular video. But in the end I don’t feel we should think this video is anything other than it is. The same with all of his content really (even the track breakdowns to a point).

Seems to be more about the way music is made. Maybe he is spot on, maybe he just can't connect with it. I really think his evaluation of the current state of the art is worth more than my tone deaf friends who love music (in the background of their lives).

I'm not saying he is right or wrong, just that, given what he does and has done for a living and the experiences he has had, his opinion might carry more weight then some.

I don't think of it so much as his preference, more his analysis. The same as a political analyst, financial analyst, sports journalist etc, etc, might speak on their topic of experience.

  • I saw some of his videos, he know about music for sure. Of course is talking more from his opinion on what he like or don’t like accord To its taste , it is human nature.

At least he don’t try to give an opinion electro, house style music.

His content is interesting sometimes less. I don’t agree with some of the title of his videos like « Horrible.. » but it must be a marketing clicbait

He probably could never understand the craft of EDM. 🤣
