@Fear2Stop FWIW, I think BA-1 is maybe the best sounding VA on iOS and comes very close to nailing that analog sound. It’s a thing of beauty honestly. Every patch I make just sounds good and hits that sweet spot.

I agree with you though, VA is not my favorite form of synthesis either. I prefer FM, Wavetable, and Granular over it.

The videos made me want it BAD, and that battery feature is lowkey one of the reasons. I do love the sound of the app... I just feel limited with subtractive. For some reason it's harder for me, with the exception of Mood, Lorentz, and VCS3. Yeah, it's MUCH easier for me to make patches with the iVCS3 than DRC...I might be the only human being in the world that's true for. Does Ripplemaker count? If so, add that to the good list LMFAO

I haven't gotten into Wavetable yet...I have Animoog Z but I never got the chance to really dig deep. I want Agonizer pretty damn badly. FM though is by far my favorite (KQ Dixie and my beloved Omega), esp when mixed with Additive (looking at YOU, Synclavier)

Man Synclavier is amazing too. I don’t use it as much as I should and every time I do I think “why don’t I use this more” lol.

If you’re worried about limitations, BA-1 has them lol. It’s far from the most feature rich synth, so you’re basically buying for the sound. And the battery effect which yeah, I agree, is really cool lol.

Buttersynth is a great Wavetable synth if you don’t have it. It also mixes in VA and FM as well so kinda ticks many boxes at once.

I like Agonizer a lot, and I use it fairly often but it does one thing that a lot of Kai apps do that I hate: it doesn’t resize correctly. You have to have the window fully open to see everything and when you resize it starts cutting stuff off.

Yeah Buttersynth is one that's on my shortlist too, just concerned about all the reports of crashing I read here.

I love Synclavier because it doesn't sound like anything else on IOS...I've made some patches that bring back memories of 1980s arcade games like Gauntlet, Paperboy, and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. That certain sound you'd mainly here in Atari/Midway arcade games that uses the Yamaha YM2151 chip, also known as OPM

I wouldn’t spend 30 bucks on BA-1 knowing Black Friday is on the horizon. Just a thought..

Yeah I can wait another month or so, because I'm gonna be getting Phase Monkey and SNEsynth for sure soon anyway, and now thinking about what I said about games OPL looks like it might be next lol

Man Gauntlet. Played that a lot growing up and I can definitely hear those same similarities. I hope Synclavier doesn’t get abandoned because it’s certainly unique on iOS. Now just need the Fairlight app to get some love and attention lol

Synclavier I had no qualms about spending the full price on it because that (along with the Prophet 5) was a bucketlist dream synth I'd never be able to afford IRL so I had to get the app. Jay wanted me to use it on her album because she plays a lot of the old Atari Games arcade stuff on her Raspberry Pi and wanted me to make patches that sounded like that particular chip

Hmm...I guess I AM getting OPL next after all then lol

For sure. I could never afford the vintage or the new one honestly. They seem amazing though and I’d love to at least play a real one some day but not sure how I’d get my hands on one lol but from what I’ve heard from people who HAVE played the real thing, the app gets pretty damn close so I’m glad to have that.

I’ve heard OPL gets quite close too. Another great one in a similar vein is Phosphor 3. Not to add more to your list lol

Yeah, that one is iPad only though, so no dice for me

As for the BA-1, knowing how close this is to the Yamaha CS-01 is a big one for me; anything based on actual hardware is a must buy. I will be getting it eventually

Hopefully I'll have a good Bandcamp Friday this coming weekend!

Oh apologies, didn’t realize you were iPhone only! In that case, nevermind haha

I’m finishing up my album right now. I may end up aiming for Friday as release day. Forgot all about Bandcamp Friday!

Yeah, I do want to get an iPad eventually but that'll be next year lol

    What's your Bandcamp page?

Everything is just on SoundCloud right now

    But this is my bandcamp

    https://hotstrange1.bandcamp.com/

Ahh Soundcloud is blocked on this computer -_- but I can access Bandcamp...followed you there

    It's perfect for synthwave.

Oh I can only imagine! I'll get it in about a month or two for sure

Thanks! I’ll give you a follow back :)

  • There is a new update v1.5 for the desktop edition, an FX strip, and the new preset navigation system. 🤩 I hope they will update the iOS version too.

    What’s new in BA-1 v1.5

BA-1 v1. 5 is a free update for all owners of BA-1. Download it by following the links in your order email.

✱ New Effect Plugin - BA-1 FX Strip:
BA-1 isn’t just an analog modeled synthesizer. It also offers a meticulously modeled FX section, based on budget 1980s rack effects. Users have been asking for a standalone edition of BA-1’s effects chain since the early days and here it is! Use the FX Strip to run any audio through BA-1’s virtual circuits and add 80s-flavored drive, filtering, delay, reverb, chorus – and even BA-1’s speaker simulator.

    ✱ Arpeggiator:
Arpeggiators were an essential ingredient in the synth sounds of the 80s. For BA-1 v1.5, we’ve added a hands-on, hardware-style arpeggiator with three modes (up, down, up/down) and a three octave range. The arp allows for un-syncing from the host tempo for more authentic (i.e. slightly out of time!) effects.

    ✱ Flexible Chorus parameter:
The original BA-1 offered a simple on/off chorus effect, reminiscent of the Junos and other classic 80s synths. In v1.5, the chorus can now be set anywhere between 0% and 100% for more creative flexibility.

    ✱ Easter eggs:
The colored dots between BA-1’s segments reveal some new additional synth parameters when clicked. LFO fade adds ramp time to the modulation wave that gradually (or abruptly) fades up to its set frequency for a more unpredictable LFO effect. Chaos introduces nonlinear behavior in the reverb and chorus algorithms for dissonance and unpredictable pitch glides.

    ✱ Improved preset browser:
BA-1’s preset manager has a vastly improved workflow in v1.5. Search presets by name, filter by pack, or mark patches with color-coded tags to remember them. You can easily import packs, create your own or browse the available BA-1 Expansions to add more sounds to your synth.

    ✱ New UI theme:
See BA-1 from a fresh perspective with the new black and red UI theme.

  • I want that black and red theme… those are our band colors and this along with Tera Pro have been the synths we’ve used the most the past few months

Yeah, the black-red theme is looking cool! 😎 The FX strip is phenomenal news!

That's amazing news! Can't wait to buy Atoms. Will Atoms be ported to iPhone like BA-1 is? Me and @Fear2Stop and a couple others are iPhone-only users. 😅

@tristan Great news and what a lovely gesture to make the strip available standalone!
Will the improved preset browser also include being able to scroll the preset list without selecting the touched preset like Taip?

  • The fx strip is not included on the ipad version?

As far as I can tell they're exactly the same except for some details handling presets.

I can’t find FX strip anywhere, I even reinstalled the app.

Are you able to load the fx strip as a separate AUv3?

  • I think we are cut off from the FX strip. 😳

  • Oh bummer :s

  • New UI theme and preset handling are great! Less squinting!

  • I like the Chaos slider. It adds some nice unstable analog character to the sound.

It's definitely on the right track but we can't do packs and thus not share to desktop, hopefully it's just an oversight. You can share from desktop but they will all end up in the User folder which can't even be renamed as of now i.e there can be only one(1) user folder. Again, hopefully this will be fixed.

I had totally missed you could do that on desktop so I was mistaken earlier, apologies ..

I've downloaded packs which I assume were made for desktop and they have their own folders. Can't go the other way though right now though it seems.

They sell them at their website but hopefully there will be free ones once we can create them, I will release free presets as I usually do (when I do) when abled to. I've been really hoping (and nagging) for Transit(iOS) to get this functionality, as it is now you can't even save one preset of your own in Transit(iOS). It's really strange in my opinion that this issue keeps popin up in various formats.

Yeah, I meant your own desktop created presets, if you do a pack of them and name them they will still end up in the user folder on iOS.

I was wrong - everything I’ve found and installed is in the User folder. That is a bit annoying.

Oh, yeah that's definitely not right @tristan

  • I keep wanting to buy this but i have so many synths that are sitting around collecting dust already 🤣 torn!
Maybe I’ll settle my aas by grabbing taip or crystalline…

If you rename a xx.baby bank to xx.zip you can unzip the bank. This should also work the other way round, zip to baby.
Nevertheless: all presets end up in the user folder. I also hope for an update soon.
