  • Man I guess I missed whatever happened. I had some not so pleasant exchanges with him but also some really pleasant ones and was a fan of the music he was making. Hope whatever he has going on is resolved and he’s okay in the long run. There were (I think) obviously some issues going on underneath. Don’t think he was a bad person at all though.

@thesoundtestroom probably made the call. Often the member asks to be deleted when they think everyone is an against them.

If you should join a discussion forum like this, international forum with people from lots of countries, lots of different temperaments, and, lots of different experiences, you should not be too sensitive and mentally weak…

Otherwise, seek another type of communication channel for your hobby…

I like how you conflate sensitivity with mental weakness. Bravo.

Ok, excuse me, but, the word “and” should have been an “or”…

    Yeah, it's peak troll behavior.

  • Some kind of mute function or temporary ban might be a good idea, what do you think @thesoundtestroom?

That said, being banned is hardly the end of the world. It's generally easy enough to come back under a different name and make a fresh start (some have a writing voice that is too recognisable for this to be feasible, but even then, I think the vast majority of people would be willing to let a banned person come back as long as they behave themselves). We should be willing to forgive people and give them a second, third or however many chances, unless they've really done something beyond the pale.

At the same time being banned is a clear signal to someone that they have overstepped the line and it usually doesn't happen unless someone has repeatedly crossed the line. If that person does come back under a new name, they're likely to exercise a bit more self control. It is also a reminder to others in the group to behave unless they want to face similar consequences.

Sometimes banning or muting someone is the kindest thing to do, for example in situations when it is clear that the poster is not only spitefully attempting to inflict pain on others but also basically self-harming in their posting strategies. Both those criteria were met in this case. As already mentioned though, some people could have been kinder in their words.

Worth remembering that people who have been banned or who have deleted themselves can, and probably still do, regularly visit the forum, so it's also wise not to be too careless with your words after the fact.

When someone is pushing your buttons too much and it seems that resolution is not possible, the best thing is either to take a break from the forum, ignore them (by using the ignore button or - more realistically - just deciding not to engage). Or, if someone is regularly dealing unskillfully with people, it doesn't really matter what their backstory is or how sorry you feel for them, they are perhaps forfeiting their right to keep their seat at the table and you are fully within your rights to alert the admin to the offending posts and let them make the call as to whether a ban is deserved or not. Every historical community everywhere in the world has had their version of expulsion from the tribe. Historically that would often lead to disastrous consequences for the individual. The physical and psychological effects of expulsion from a forum, while not a pleasant or convenient thing to experience, pale in significance to the results of real world expulsion from your hunter-gatherer tribe.

  • Maybe you should clarify your statement? Are you equating temperaments with nationality? What’s the correct amount of sensitivity someone should have? What does “mentally weak” mean?
What you’ve expressed so far sounds like tedious macho bullshit whenever you’re from.

It’s not a secret that people from example Italy acting more emotionell than people from northern europe (in general)…

Fascinating. You’re clearly very educated. Could you keep listing countries and their relevant temperaments? Thanks

i can't believe there are still people saying stuff like that.

  • I am Italian and I find Erika’s comment (about Italians) very funny. First of all Italy is a “long” country with many different cultures. So generalizing is not possible and it shows a lack of knowledge. Are the ragged and strong people from the Alps not Italians?
Or the brave Sicilians that fight silently against the mafia not Italians?
I spent most of my life working as a Research engineer in the Netherlands and I was exposed to this sort of theories many times. I remember being told that this happens because our blood viscosity is lower 😂😂
In the end I can only ascribe a comment like Ezra’s to a sad combination of ignorance and racism.
Luckily I see the new generations growing free from these horrid stereotypes.

  • Regarding temporary bans, I would actually feel less restraint knowing that I’d only be thrown into the drunk tank for the night, or however long 😂.
I’d feel more inclined to pull a, “fck you, fck you, fck you, YOUR COOL, fck you. I’m out!”

"Still"? How is this stuff less relevant today than it was before? As someone who has lived and worked for many years in 3 different countries, I can tell you (if you haven't done the same) that most people's mind would be completely blown if they had even a glimpse of the huge differences in culture even inside the EU.

'saying stuff like that' can ruffle feathers though particularly in casual internet chat.

  • What is the over/under on someone saying unironically “there is a kernel of truth to stereotypes” in this thread?

  • Hey man, there were good truths and bad truths on both sides.

    Do you mean the opinion?

    Oh right.

It probably is here too - I'm not a betting man so I have no idea.

    +1

  • First of all congratulations on your statistics: 2 people sure make for a solid statistics base. BTW we are Italians not Italiens (those are hybrid aliens but we keep them secret).

Secondly you are right. Sometimes stereotypes are true and useful. During my years in Holland too many women expressed the wish to verify a certain Italian stereotype and I was happy to indulge. 😉

Seriously now. racism is horrid because it creeps into the simpler and weaker minds

Lol, I was recently accused of being racist because I confused The Office with Parks and Rec. True story!
