New forum categories

Hey everyone!

Doug (@thesoundtestroom) and I have decided that those of you who made arguments for the reinstatement of a "miscellaneous" forum category have a reasonable point, and there are now two new (old?) categories:

  • Other, for discussion of other, non-musical topics (as long as they're not of a controversial nature – the point here is to keep the peace), and
  • Introduce Yourself, for saying hi!

Hopefully we can have our cake and eat it too, here: Maintain the lovely peace that has held since the change, while also getting to have interesting side conversations here.

Cheers,
Michael

  • That’s exciting news for me.

  • A good decision. :)

    and
    https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/46654/where-are-you

Would be right at home in "Introduce Yourself" if you feel like moving them.

  • @wim Good call, I’ve moved them to Introduce Yourself 😊

  • I've already banned myself from going to Other.

  • I've put myself on ignore as a preventative measure.

  • Just for sake of science, would be curious to know how many users are enough to keep a forum to stand still/descend
I guess the next is simply wait it out...

  • Excellent!

  • I think this is a positive change, thank you. 👍

Genuine question for the admins: is taking a stand against the invasion of, and genocide perpetrated in, Ukraine considered "a topic of controversial nature" according to these new rules?

That is very nice and thoughtful of you guys. Could you please move the thread about studio setups into the the Other thread and sort of revive it, really inspired me looking at people’s creative caves?

    I think, yes.

There are different opinions about this topic and it's history.

Are you an admin? I'm asking because my goal with this question is explicitly to get an "official response" to then keep to.

(BTW I respect your take either way, although I do hope the actual arguments you listed will never justify the banning of anything. I mean, there are different opinions about literally everything, and Mozart is also history. You could clear the whole forum based on these two tenets. 👌)

  • Thank you guys for allowing sane thoughtfulness to prevail. I would like the rules to be more specific…

No Politics, No controversial current events, No diety based religion and NO hateful comments. Let’s be totally clear if we can for a fresh start. My dog thanks you as he is a narcissist and demands pictures of him be posted.

    +1

  • Can we make it a rule for there to be no political discussions at all? For me these are the ones that stir up the most venom.

Any political discussion is a controverse one.
    This should be clear, or?

And so, not part of this forum from what Michael posted.

The more specific the better, IMO.

  • On the fediverse most of us use content warnings about political stuff

Also, such subject matter is often localised or regionalised to specific countries, and most countries aren’t the one you’re in (by definition – there’s more than one country)

This accepted use of content warnings enables a nice relaxed experience of being able to ignore stuff – lots of stuff

And those that don’t use CWs I just block anyway (same as I do to people who post those jangly annoying little grids of green squares which are in themselves massive accessibility violations) (and people who post things related to violence) (and people who post things to do with… well, I have a gigantic and ever-growing block list and filter list for hiding things that would make my very pleasant and contented day not so content – that’s why I like content warnings, I want to be warned that my contentedness is potentially under threat)

Here, though, I wouldn’t want to see content warnings, if it needs a CW, I just don’t want to see the stuff in the first place, there’s probably somewhere better to post it that isn’t here

  • I think this is just cracking the door open again, but I hope it still stays peaceful. Good luck! @thesoundtestroom @Michael

  • Honestly I agree with @LinearLineman and his post about the forum losing its appeal with the reduction of content types.

Perhaps the best thing to do would be to allow users to filter which categories they can see. All off topic content can be removed with the click of a button.

Of course this also relies on people to have self control and discipline in what they view but also in keeping discussion on topic. But such is life!

I’m glad these topics are back. We aren’t automatons that access only parts of our being when we engage in community, as much as we may want to be.

  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • IMO this won’t work and peace won’t be kept. What did work is this:

And Michael want's this to be a music forum.
He really was clear about this.

But, well…I hope everyone will…err…please be…err…well, I’ll just say good luck again :)

  • More pictures of dogs would be good.

We could vote on it, but that be politickish

I’ll try and make this a little clearer.
The forum is mainly for music related content.
Having said that, the two new categories should give you all enough leeway to discuss almost anything you like.
It would be preferable if there were no political or religious discussions, these will always cause problems because we all have strong beliefs in these particular areas, and that in itself tends to cause arguments that can’t really be rectified or resolved, so it tends to descend into chaos, nobody really wants that.

Whatever you choose to discuss here please do it with courtesy and respect, don’t be aggressive, nasty or dismissive of someone else’s personal opinions, it won’t be tolerated.

If you read something that you feel is wrong please flag that comment or post, or you can DM me.

Over the last few weeks, since the new changes were put in place you have all been amazing, seriously, we have had around 10 flagged comments and some them were spam.

    Carry on and be cool😊👍
    Doug

Thanks for allowing some small few off topic conversations. Totally understand wanting to keep it music only given some of the drama, but there’s been a few off topic threads here in the past that were interesting and people mostly behaved.
