  • Talking about the Yamaha SY series, the SY85 was "The king of PCM" for me until I discovered the Roland JV series in the form of the JV-1080. I wish someone would make an iOS version of the SY85 😊 (lots of work there, hundreds and hundreds of very complex patches and "performances" (multi-instrument patches))

  • The SY22 was my first synth when I was 18 - all I could afford, so got to learn how to programme the hell out of it. Now too many synths….

Gospel Musicians has a SY85 expansion for Pure Synth Platinum on the way...
...sure it will not be a 100% replica but pretty darn close as the pure synth engine has 4 oscillators per voice so you could easily replicate a 'performance' (4 voices) and there's more filter-types to choose from than on the real SY85.

From what I know it will include all the factory presets and also all the raw waveforms including drums.

No clue when it drops though...

The SY22 was my very first synths as well!

    Small world.

That sounds great. Yeah it'll be hard to reproduce as the SY85 also has those 8 sliders which, from what I can remember, all are custom-mapped to parameters in each "Voice"? And maybe even "Performance" (or did they just adjust the relative volumes of the individual voices in each performance? 🤔 My SY85 is in storage in another country 😢)

Most of them are more or less 'hard mapped' (Attack, Release, CutOff, Resonance, Send to FX1& 2 etc.).

CS3 & CS4 could be assigned to a fixed set of parameters in voice or performance mode.
They all send Midi CC which was handy for automating other stuff.

Mine is still in working condition but the floppy drive has died so I can't access my old (50+) floppies where I've stored quite a bunch of stuff, samples, sounds, songs, sequences from mid 90s to mid 2000s...

Considering King of FM will be 100% free I will be getting it for the sounds :)

I’m premiering King Of FM in a few hours if you are interested in hearing great this sounds😊

    good lord this sounds good

  • Congrats with sobriety! I’m more than 2 yrs in. I still love what you do for the iOS community! You are an asset sir!

  • Came here to say ditto on the sobriety. Substances are weird. I've had employees who can take acid on Sunday, and write code on Monday, and other employees who can't handle their decaf coffee.

You've touched a lot of people's lives, and I hope we can all support you through your ongoing journey.

  • Great to see you back @AnalogMatthew and back in action.

    Stay healthy m’man!

Whoa. Some impressive sounding demo there.

  • My first and only synth for about 5 years at the beginning of my synth-life was a DX7. I was proud of some patches I crafted for that. Alas, I sold it before I had any notion there would be future interest or software emulations of it. All my patches were stored on floppies,
Thanks for this - a labor of love it sounds like.

  • It may be free, but I refuse to use it until @Spidericemidas creates a patch bank for it! 😊

    Spider makes everything more awesome!!!

  • It’s wonderful. Thanks so much for this. My plans for the day are ruined!

  • Sounds really good so far, albeit I’ve had a few glitches in standalone with notes sticking, and clicking while changing presets. No biggie as I know these things happen and they’ll get fixed ; about to test it as an au

  • Thank you @AnalogMatthew. Sounds great and always good to hear about renewed motivation, go for it!

  • Thank you @AnalogMatthew and best wishes!

Ohh thanks for posting that photo, that brings up memories 😊 I do remember now.

Anyway enough thread derailing, the SY85 didn't even do FM so...

  • Yep a real joy to play. Itopia is there…a little low-fi compared to the SY77, but still fun.

  • Many thanks! This sounds amazing! Oddly I had an SY-77 when it first was a new synth but never liked it. It definitely had a unique sound.

  • thanks Matt, fab stuff :)

  • @AnalogMatthew , any plans or thoughts on bringing AudioKit to macOS in the future as standalone and Audio Unit plug-ins?

Well, if you have a Silicon Mac, open this link on your Mac:
    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/king-of-fm-dx-synth-e-piano/id1672644102

While I'm not officially supporting AUv3 in Logic/GarageBand, the beta testers have been using it pretty well. Most of the sound demos in my intro video were made with the free King of FM AUv3 that's included w/ the Mac version

Also, thanks everyone! You make development damn worth it.
Real excited to hear all your jams!

FYI, I did install the KoFM app and tested it on my M1 iMac and it did not work with Logic or GarageBand as an Audio Unit. iOS only… for now… I guess. :)

Also, thanks for the new patches (updated today). 👍
