Ampify Groovebox - do you still use this app?

The title has it. Once in a while I come back to it and get a beat going quite easily and quickly. But I never made more out of these beats. There are still some features missing and a pm was has not been answered for more than a year. So it seems to have lost momentum, doesn‘t it?

I just double checked: @AmpifyxNovation did not respond for 15 months to be precise. Obviously they are fine with selling sound packs…

  • I've basically stopped using any app that isn't native AUv3.

  • It was free just to sell IAP this is the Amplify model in pricing for it.

Yes I still use it , it is not bad at all , funny. It isn’t a pro app and I never create something to use in a track with it .

It’s easy to use and relaxing this is why I use it as a relaxing app.

What was about your PM to the dev ?

  • spent so much on that app... haven't touched it in years.

This is a rather different take on Groovebox - this never occured to me but surely has some weight and substance!

  • What about their other app, Blocs Wave?

I love that little app. Still lots of fun.

  • I use Blocs Wave very good sound but you can spend a lot of Monney on IAP. To my opinion it is far better than Groovebox to boost your ideas. Very good app and GUI and fun but useful too.

I switch between it and Koala according to what I wan to do. I prefer Koala to go on the town or nature to sample on my IPhone sounds. Groovebox more on my IPad but I need to install it now on my iPhone SE to see how it is efficient on the IPhone.

    Yes.

But you can also import your own samples. Much cheaper.

  • Yes but I do that in Koala rather than Bloc Waves. I bought only some IAP some vocal particularly that fit my music.

I like importing a sample into Blocs and then using the slicing and random feature to come up with interesting grooves.

I always seem to use Blocs on the phone and Koala on the iPad.

record from my iPhone in Koala the noises of busy streets and I should perhaps import them in bloc wave in my Ipad .

Yeah - stick a drum beat behind them and import a synth lead and use "random slice" to see what you get.

    Good idea

  • I still use it but not as much since Ableton Note came out. Groovebox has some great sounding synths and presets imo and it exports projects as Ableton projects which I mainly use it for.

  • I use them all. Groove box drums are quick and easy. I put the synths through effects and record them as loops. I got the subscription for Launchpad but I won’t be renewing. Blocs Wave is great… apart from the age old gripe that everyone gave up on - filing for your own loops.

Same than you I have stop subscription for Launchpad as it is more for DJ to my opinion.

+1 to what @robosardine said—I still use and enjoy all 3 Ampify apps although I find Launchpad to be the least useful in the sense that I always feel like I’m just remixing someone else’s creation and find it hard to build up something that feels sufficiently original. The fx are the best thing about that and I really wish they were available in the other apps or even better as a separate AUv3. IMHO Groovebox is hands down the easiest way to build up a quick and great-sounding foundation for a track—and I can even do it while on an exercise bike, for example. I love the drums in particular and the synths have a unique sound that fits well with my style and it is easy to customize patterns and dial in just what I want. Blocs Wave is a fantastic source for high quality loops that add interesting flourishes and complement whatever else I’m working on, it’s easy to get things timed correctly and do some basic editing. Again, I really wish I could apply effects directly in there. However, I am an avid Endlesss user so bringing all of these parts into that offers plenty of opportunity to warp and mangle things before layering vocals, guitar, more synths, whatever—and I can easily export those stems into Ableton for track-building and refinement. I would love to see updates to the Ampify apps to add more features, consolidate things, make them even more integrated…but like someone else said, I guess the soundpack selling model is their profit center.

  • Every once in awhile you can something interesting from throwing a sample into auto remix (rdm splice player), take that and play somewhere else. But mostly just use it to check out their samples and use elsewhere

  • Groovebox is one of the few music apps still on my iPhone, though as someone else mentioned Ableton Note tends to get more use for me. Similar workflows, but Note is newer so the new shiny is my go to.

  • I have not seen anything new added to Groovebox for some time and they skipped the Black Friday sale last year for that app, which was unusual for them. I do like the app as it is so easy to pick up and start something. I have spent far too much on preset packs so their business model worked on me. I hope that the lack of activity is because Ampify are working on something new, or some big updates.

I hope so too, but I will not bet any money on that.

  • I had higher hopes, I treat it as a toy, and I am OK with that.

  • I’ve started more Projects with Groovebox than any other iOS app. I’ve even finished some too but have a hundred + in progress.

I love the balance of simplicity and expressiveness - the Automation for example: total joy. It’s also rock solid reliable. The continuous flow of new Drumbox IAPs has been addictive fun though those seem to have stalled for a bit.

  • Echoing everyone else here. I own and use all 3 a decent amount. Mostly just for fun but I’ve occasionally made some worthwhile loops that I ended up using elsewhere. Fun factor and ease of use are the main reasons I keep coming back to them. And the synths in Groovebox sound fantastic.

  • For some reason Groovebox always sounds much better to me through external speakers. More so than most other apps.

    Weird. In what way "better"?

  • Anyone know if you can actually get at the individual Groovebox projects and therefore transfer them from this old iPad to the new one etc? I'm exporting stems/waves which is fine, but would love to transfer the good old stuff to the fresh new place etc and then keep tweaking as required...

  • yep, love the drum kits you can purchase
in this app. I just with it would go AU so i can use it in Aum.

  • Not very often but when I do it’s fun. I am all in on auv3 but this is one I probably would actually never use if it was an auv3. I use it to jam and have fun more like a toy or game than for making music.

But sometimes I will come up with an idea with it and then I’ll export the project to BlocsWave to use at a later date. Bits of Groovebox have inspired finished songs before so it’s all good.

I like that it’s standalone. It’s something to play with on my phone instead of angry birds (or whatever people are playing on their phones these days).
