Good points.
Should be an interesting few years ahead.
It is remenber me when the big recording studio had only a big 32 tracks Tascam tape recorder, and only the top studios for other studios had 16 tracks only . You can do a lot with 32 tracks.
The way I see it, it's the opposite.
Ever since the the iPod + iTunes, Apple has been in the services & content delivery business, and their hardware are just expensive dongles to lock you into the Apple content ecosystem. I'm sure that's also how their shareholders see them.
Sure, they make a lot of money on the hardware too, but without the magic dough of their seamless integration of software, OS, stores, cloud services etc they would be just another Samsung and you don't want to be a competitor to big Asian electronics OEMs if your value proposition is just based on hardware specs. That's bringing a knife to a gunfight.
Sure. But the trade off was “overdubbing” and bouncing down (pre-mixing). Now producers keep tracks of takes to pick at mixdown. Anyway, we will have more choices with LP4IOS. and it will mark the gold rush to make IOS versions (ports) and raise prices or selling subscriptions to generate maintenance revenue.
IOS becomes Pro when someone can make money from it. Lord knows we haven’t.
Software and services are a growing part of their pie, but hardware sales (especially iPhone) eclipse all of their other income streams.

"People who are really serious about software should make their own hardware"
I think the folks working on the Apple silicon SoCs might quibble with your “knife to a gunfight” characterization. But I also think you’re right that Apple is paying more and more attention to recurring revenue streams, and that means services and (as of now) software.
It would be cool if you could plug in a computer but use ipad screen to tweak.
When a bigger ipad is made.
Without computer. Enough for some or mixing.
With computer. It overides ipad cpu. Or ipad cpu is allocated to other tasks.
As of today, the following plugins still don't work or won't validate on Logic Pro for macOS.
Any others that people would like to mention?
In time I do believe modular computing will become the norm, it’s slowly heading in that direction.
