Thor Sale -- convince me
Thor is on sale $5 US thru end of August, lowest price ever. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id660195946?mt=8
I could peruse the forum and youtube to see if I'll like it, but if anyone wants something to discuss today, how about posting a two line synopsis of Thor's pros and cons? how's the MIDI? CPU performance with multiple apps going in Audiobus? etc..
I really might jump on this at that price.
Comments
Taxing on an ipad2, other than that, a no brainer at five bucks. MIDI has improved and is OK.
Great interface, very easy to use in spite of all the features. Covers a large spectrum of synthesis types.
Just get it already...
CPU is very ok on the iPad Air at least.
I the UI is also very nice. You have all the knobs on sight.
And it's Thor man. It sounds as smooth as the Reason version (presets are also compatible)
as far as I can tell MIDI out is non-existent, which is a shame since the keyboard layouts/keyboard performance interface is great.
sound-wise, I think it's great. Mod matrix is really awesome.
you'll notice from the amount of time in between updates, however, that Thor is not high on Propellerheads' list of things to do or improve. So you'll have to accept it for what it does and not assume, or hope, anything will be added, etc.
For $5, it's kind of a no-brainer if you're itching to buy a new synth for your iPad.
"MS2011 Rezo Lead" is the only reason I need to blow 5 bucks on the app.
Other apps can see "Thor Keyboard" as a source, but I've been unable to actually get it to work...
It's on sale for $5? Don't even think one and a half times, thor will do just about anything you could ever want to do with a synth. Every time I am tempted to buy a new synth app, I open up thor or sunrizer and remind myself that if I can't make the sound I want on either, then I need to figure out why and make it happen. Plus, lots of great thor tutorials on propellerheads website.
Here are some of the many things you can do with Thor: https://www.propellerheads.se/substance/discovering-reason/index.cfm?article=part19&fuseaction=get_article
Yea, at $4.99 it's a no brainer. Very, very versatile synth. And a brilliantly designed touch screen UI, both for the keyboard/blades and how it handles tweaking knobs etc. it's worth the 5 bucks just to check that out, and have some fun with it
OK, then: its a "no-brainer". ...rather than risk the reputation of my mental capacities, I think I'll go for it. ;-b

this is actually a big factor for me, thanks for mentioning. Would others agree?
Also, it would be interesting to see if IAA support opens up MIDI out capabilities... anyone want to update and run a test for us?

Others have implemented similar solutions since, but none have come close to the functionality the Props have with this one. Basically you get a line under your finger, the further away from the knob you drag the finger, the finer the movement of the parameter will be (and the line will clearly show what you're changing, no fuzz or irritating unintentional movements etc).
Holy crap, it's $5? Thor was one of the popular ones I was actually proud of myself for holding out on. I figured with an iPad2 that would probably be one I should pass on. But I also never thought it would go that low.
I see a lot of people annoyed that they don't work on it more often, but a lot of people also mention it along with Animoog and a few others on the short list of best sounding iOS synths.
EDIT: I see from the other thread that it was also updated, which is as encouraging as the sale.
@ChrisG, that sounds great. MIDI Designer has a similar feature for fine tuning and displaying the value while you change it.
I think Thor is a synth that isn't a " just do it because it exists and is cheap" synth, but can be a total workhorse with some effort in programming. And if you just want to use presets, lots of those too. But it basically does any type of synthesis you'd want to do. Maybe the bad part about it is that it will fight an Appaholic nature with the reminder that "you already have a tool that does this!" Not that other synths aren't worth it, but this can cover so many bases well and is really well designed and implemented.
Tons of presets and it just sounds great! Enough "reason" to buy it.
imo this synth is easily worth it for $5 alone for the power of the oscillators (imo, this is a "thick" synth), but it's doubly worth it because the layout is very good as an educational tool (it does a good job of making synth routing explanatory)
There was a thread not too long ago about desert islands and what synth would you want. There were many votes for Thor. Myself, I'd buy it again for $5.
At that price, you'd be daft not to!
There are (nice) noises I have got out of Thor that I can't imagine anywhere else or from anything else.
Don't get it. If you're too lazy to look at youtube videos, you'll never learn how to use Thor if you do get it...
Is it worth it alone just for the patches?
@PaulB said:
about that... yup, too lazy to come up with a witty reply.
however, I've been convinced. downloading now.
It ain't all that hard...
I kinda agree with @PaulB whether he's being tongue in cheek that's another story. I could pretty much say that without a doubt I have all of the power that ipad can offer in terms of synthesis as it is. Animoog, isem, sunrizer, Cassini, ims20, tc11 etc, etc. So the question is:
Why on earth do I need another synth. Am I trying to fool myself into believing that all of a sudden the £2.99 is gonna get me a ticket to a new sonic place I haven't been too lazy to explore in the past. Anyway that's just my meanderings. I recon if you have the itch @Hmtx then go for it. It is truly cheap.
It's also very refreshing and reassuring to see no negative comments in this thread.
So @Hmtx now that you've got it, are you blown away?
@Paulyboy69 Yes. It's a great synth from a great company, and the Desktop Thor presets work on the iOS version. It comes with a lot of great sounding presets to begin with too. :-) $5 is a steal! :-)
Awesome thanks!

Does the desktop version come with presets that the iPad version doesn't have?
@Hmtx said:
Lol. I thought that might do it...
Just downloaded it...WOW. I had not idea it had the depth of content out-of-the-box that it has (and apparently more available. If anyone recently bought microTERA, we're talking at least as many presets as that synth had. They sound good too. I expect some recording difficulties on my iPad2, but for 5 bucks and the hope that I'll upgrade my iPad in the future, it loads up more quickly and runs better than some other synths I have.
