It's so great to see your answers my friends.

Before May 6th, I made music for myself in hopes of getting a little praise. It's why I loved getting comments. Money was secondary, and only the cherry on the sundae.

From May 6th onwards, I make music to honour God. I got back into my Faith (not religion but personal belief). It's still an inner desire to express myself through my music, but the motivation is different. Making joyful noises and all that.

I don't want fame or fortune from music. Just a comfortable enough living. My main source of income musicwise is from playing piano live. I also plan to teach beginner piano as well. But creating music is my passion, and honestly I don't want to make it big lest my musical output is controlled by others (such as a record label).

Good for you and good luck in your new direction with purpose.

  • Awesome thread.

    Walk hard my friends.

I haven’t watched the video yet, but it’s all so juicy. An artists struggle for why. I make very little, and berate myself with a mixture of being time-poor, learning being hard when tired, easy distracted by either fighting the wish to be what I am not (you-tube gas daydreams), or frozen, terrified by imagining that I am here to conquer death with a legacy. I’m privileged enough to have this middle aged angst. My conceit (and digital commodification) stops me recording anything, occasionally I document, but mostly I solve engineering puzzles, be a librarian, research/learn and practice a little daily, I sometimes feel the joy of jamming a riff that resonates, and that’s charming when facing the awe of unlimited knowledge, while myself being finite. Repeatedly failing, just to taste the entrails of occasional joy is not enough for me. I need other people to share this journey with.

So why for the last 5 years have I put myself through this nightmare? We humans are all different, yet equal. Our current needs are individual, yet we all recognise the suffering of being lacking, this slack shared humanity. The great leveller.

For me it’s about that 3am moment, like love fleeting, rare and mostly faked. My need for connection is strong, and my strategy is to enable a performance that can channel a force that breaks down the barriers between people, so we can sense each other’s moment, banked to memory, till we fade. I’m unlikely to be touched by such a gift I know, yet I need to try, just in case. As a hero of mine said to me after playing a concert, anyone can do this, you just need to want to.

In between low expectations and high hopes is that sweet spot where I am neither mourning what I do not have, nor pretending not to miss it.

Good luck with your dreams of possibility comrades, they will keep you going.

  • @Svetlovska Thank you for such a thoughtful post. Einstein believed there is no past present or future. It is one continuous whole. I used to perform radio shows. Every radio wave still travels the universe and will do so long after I have gone. Our creations are all a part of whatever this universe is. You bring them to life they have existence and that’s good enough for me…

  • YouTube algo suggested this after watching the above... pretty intense...

  • That was bloody brilliant.

My brother sent this to me a few weeks ago, insane but great stuff. And the subject matter of the song is quite fitting for this topic.

  • Yeah... each time I listen to it a new bit cracks me up :)

  • I’ve only just watched the VT video and then read this thread through. Was going to write something pithy, but @Svetlovska has pretty much nailed it, and much more eloquently than I could have put it.

It does make a huge difference if somebody likes your work, particularly if it’s someone whose work you like.

I dont make music for others, its just for me, its just a hobby for the winter months that keeps me entertained. I make SFX for movie/film/documentary of real weapons, real explosions etc. No marketing involved as its such a niche market, everybody knows everyone else.

Yep, this is me too. I'm just passing the time, entertaining myself. No unrealistic desire to be noticed, let alone have someone actually listen to what I do. Don't let social media get you down. Just do the work.

Best journey across chapel perilous I’ve heard in a while.

  • The funny thing is, Cameron has so much talent for both audio and video that I fully expect him to land some major mainstream work in the next decade or so. The road trip video he just put out with Benn Jordan is just one stunning shot after another. There’s no reason he won’t be doing cinematography or scoring for serious films down the line.

He’s also just a great thoughtful guy who is coming into his own, so I really hope he finds that level of success.

I can go for years off of one more or less good enough for me semi-genuine compliment from someone I respect, so I have a few in the can.

That sounds cool, is there an online place they congregate or is it an actual meat space thing?

“Meat Space Explosion” sounds like a good band or song name…

  • No not at all, its a group of acquaintances that have virtually met up over the years and have become friends
