Prep [Logic Pro]

edited May 2023 in Logic Pro

So I’m clearing space for Tuesday. Most of my DAW projects can save in the cloud or wherever, same for most of my Effects tweaks that I like and Synth tweaks. But I kept a couple apps that are top class like the FabFilter family and I kept Harmonizr because I’m not aware of anything in LPro that can even get close. (I suspect LPro will be in the neighborhood of 50-60gb fully loaded but I suspect it’ll get bigger as I fill it up with projects.) could be wrong.
Anyway, what are those of you who’ll give it a try keeping/loosing?

  • Keeping all apps as logic might not be ideal.

It’s compatible with the iPad 8th gen which starts at 32gb of storage so I don’t think it’ll be anywhere close to 50-60gb. Under 20gb is more likely for the App + all content. You’ll probably be able to pick and choose what sound packs you actually want to install like in GarageBand too.

You keep Harmonizer Cristal from Eventide ? Or is it an other app ?

  • I’ll likely want the lot. I’ve listened to several from the Mac version and haven’t heard any losers yet. We’ll likely be able to import GarageBand packs if it’s similar to Mac version. I think mine’s going to bloat up pretty easily.
I’ve got 256gb on my Air4 so I know I’m going to be ok space wise. I guess I’m also removing distractions so I can learn iOSLpro hot&heavy. My plan is one DAW for all and my brain would rather redownload as I see a need. It’s mostly a superstitious music brain thing. I was feeling stale on my existing iOS-Verse so it’s overdue for me.

Harmonizr is a Midi Vocal app that is incredible:

It’s compatible with the iPad 8th gen which starts at 32gb of storage so I don’t think it’ll be anywhere close to 50-60gb. Under 20gb is more likely for the App + all content. You’ll probably be able to pick and choose what sound packs you actually want to install like in GarageBand too.

Compatibility with the 8th Gen doesn’t mean it’ll necessarily all fit on the base iPad. They’ve said it requires that processor- not that every iPad with that processor will be able to accommodate all the content. I wouldn’t put it past them to disappoint quite a few people in this way.

However, the important stuff will certainly fit. And who knows - maybe it all will.

Nothing will change for the foreseeable future for me. :) I still have approx 256gb left of 512gb.

    I’ve only used 430GB of my 1TB iPad Pro’s storage, and 817GB of my 2TB iCloud .

In other words, pleeeeenty of space for some Logic Pro action!

[edit] Sorry, re-reading the post above, I think I assumed you meant something that you didn't. Oh well, I'll leave the post in case anyone else is confused on that point.

Processor type doesn't determine what will fit on an iPad. Available storage is the only factor for an iPad that is listed as compatible by Apple. A 128gb M2 iPad Pro so loaded with other apps and files that only 2gb remains will most likely not be able to accommodate it. Whereas a 64gb A12 iPad with 40gb free certainly could.

Performance is the differentiator. An A12 iPad will be able to run everything that Logic Pro has, just like the M2 Pro. But the M2 Pro will be able to run more tracks and plugins at the same time before bogging down.

  • I wonder what the situation with universal AU plug-ins might be in the future? Would be v difficult to round-trip anything that used plugins exclusive to either platform.

I think that's why everyone is getting so excited about the built in plug ins. Whatever Apple provides on iPad should work the same on desktop (and hopefully vice versa). Otherwise pressure will be on for iOS specific plug ins to update to Universal and to a lesser extent desktop plugins to update to Universal too.
Many external plug ins won't be updated so folks need to think carefully about what they do with Logic. Apple will keep upping the minimum reqs and if you're committed to lots of 3rd party plug ins then some will fail to keep up. This already happens of course but you can choose not to update iOS... but Apple won't give you that luxury to stay up to date with Logic I'm sure.

  • I’m not really deleting anything until it gets here and I see the storage space needed. I’m not solely gonna be working in Logic (I’m never leaving AUM) so I’ll still need/want all of my favorite synth/drum/sampler/effect apps.

Same. Logic Pro will most likely become my main DAW, but you can't top the fun of live performing in AUM!

That said, I wonder if my AUM workflow will change slightly from recording to a master track to just recording stems to mix down in Logic Pro. 🤔 Remains to be seen.

That’s exactly what I’ve been wondering. I’m sure some tracks will be “finished” in AUM just by virtue of being a simpler track. But with all the stock plugins in LPx I’m sure it’ll be great for mixing down those stems or cutting them up and arranging them. Definitely gonna be an exciting time.

  • edited May 2023

If garagebandios gets a major update would it even be worth paying for logic? Just like on the Mac one is free and the other you had to pay for. Logic is hands down the winner but for space reasons I can see still doing work in GB then transferring to logic. Is backwards compatibility worth 5$ a month? Guess we will see after the 30 day trial is over :)

The picture on the site shows gb on iPhone handing off to logic on iPad

Do we have a release time? Just be anxious all day waiting for the first YouTube videos to pop out while I’m at work

Do any daws or xequence scroll timeline across devices via link?

Or how does logic clip launcher work compared to Drambo.

    Number of patterns etc.

  • @sigma79 said:

Link doesn't have any song position information. It's just a metronome that gets shared by all the apps and devices that are running and use it.

If you start Link compatible DAWS on two devices, they'll advance in sync and should always be on the same bar and beat. But scrolling? That's up to the device width, zoom level, etc. They're going to scroll at different times, but should always keep the current bar visible.

Link has nothing to do with it though. It's only because they should stay in sync with each other. Each DAW is going to handle its own scrolling.

Thanks for all your great videos, we will need the same for Logic ios from you , as you explain very well good tutorials very focus on 1 apps is not so common.

  • I'm really looking forward trying Logic. :) As I'm a big fan of BM3s Pad Layout, is there any Midi effect that has those Pads where you can choose the scale you play in? This was my Flaws with all the other DAWs i've tested, as its the easiest way to be productive on a touchscreen for me.

Logic Pro is not the right tool to jamming. Like any traditional daw are not for jamming. So AUM, Loopy Pro and other apps still are more fit for Jam and live music.

I found out with cubasis what you are saying.

I guess im hoping logic isnt the place to make music from start to finish.

Will see how it is for mixing.

Even if I could just record the output of a song.

Seems a bit weird relying on multiple ipads, ever needing to recall a song.

The LiveLoop grid is actually pretty nice once one gets used to it...
...this is also a good excuse to learn using the busses to route audio to the tracks where loops are recorded :sunglasses:
(ie. to record the output of a midi-track to any of the 'loops' in the live-loop grid, just sett all loop tracks to use the same bus as the input, not as immediate as say LoopyPro but it can be done).

Yes you can do jam but you don’t get the jam free feeling with LP. If you are a pro in front of 20 000 people you will use more Ableton Live , some harware too and controlers. If you are just a hobbyist, like I am, IPad and some specific jaming apps are pretty good with a novation controler.
