Thing is though, that really everyone is different - it’s really that simple. I can’t be bothered with modular cables generally but some people love it. I don’t feel much need for physical knobs, some people do. Some love generative midi, some hate it. Some find timelines constricting, some find the lack of them constricting, Different strokes for different folks!
I understand all that.
I don’t mean I don’t understand why people don’t like Logic, that’s obviously down to personal preference. I don’t need my biases confirming. I’m not bothered by what apps somebody else uses or how crap they think my chosen apps are. I know what I like and I’m confident in my choices.
But there’s been a ton of general negativity, whinging ad nauseam and pessimism. I’m not saying people shouldn’t have a whinge either. If people feel the need to tell us all how bad Logic is, that’s their prerogative. I’m not asking for them to stop.
Im just surprised at how much negativity there is. Is all.
It seems some people on ABF have taken the release of Logic as a personal insult
Haha, I get you. Well, once I realized today I can send midi and audio from Logic to AUM and vice versa, I did renew my sub after all 🤓😁
My annual sub went active today. The commitment has refocused how I use iDevices for music. My focus is now on universal apps (with a few notable exceptions on both the iPad and desktop sides). I'm not bothered that there hasn't been an update yet, though I'm eager to see an update drop; I think it will say a lot about where Apple's focus will be. There are some sizable gaps/bugs/issues with the 1.0 product, but even in its current state it is a very strong product.
If we get to a year from now and all they've shipped are "bug fixed and improvements" releases I might re-think a renewal. But my expectation is that we'll see some compelling updates in the next 12 months. They probably won't ship new features at the rate @Michael does, but it's only Apple, after all
Yeah, you’re totally right with everything you’re saying here.
It’s clear that the lacking features in Logic overshadows the amount of great things that Logic does on iPad…
I can only complain on one thing, and that’s the need of an update of Logic to handle the most important details…
I have subs for a year…
I guess we all view things differently but I was actually pleasantly surprised about the lack of ongoing drama. The first few weeks people were deciding whether it was for them or not and of course there was a lot of discussion around where reality had not met expectation for some, but since then I see people moving on to other things or posting in threads like this which invite opinion on the subject.
The release of Logic has, if nothing else, made me quite proud of the people of the forum for keeping things reasonable as this could have been quite a divisive topic, whether for or against. Opinion is going to be pretty fluid though - new updates will bring people on board who were initially against the idea of getting it, and some who were hanging on for bug fixes etc might drop away for a while.
Edit: Wrong post, sry.
You described the situation perfectly, your experience is almost the same as mine. Was really fun to be part of this event, and always will be remembered as a time well spent. 😎
There’s been pessimism…but this forum has anti-apple revenge in its DNA…audiobus is certainly not an Apple protocol
So I’m guessing the new KQ app works for this after all? If that’s the case I will renew as well
ALRIGHT FINE. I’m renewing my subscription lol. I’ve spent the better part of the day, until I ran some errands, going into C3, Zenbeats, and Logic and making quick projects and I actually may like Logic the most after all. I’m still undecided but I need another month to make a final choice.
I still may like Zenbeats more for clip launching but I haven’t dove into LP4i’s clip launcher enough yet. But the bigger squares for your loops in ZB make it a bit easier to visualize.
Ha ha! It wasn't ... until Apple introduced IAA and forced Michael to replace his protocol with IAA as the underlying mechanism. It took him one hell of a lot of time to do it too. True fact.
I have a piles of CB3, GB, a few ZB starter projects on my iPad 97percent Make me cringe…they need to be burned alive.
I have 20 or so Logic projects since May 23rd and each one still sounds worth finishing. 100 percent of them. Definitely happy about this
Chasing that state of flow again:
Over the last few weeks been toying with Logic Pro
I am mainly using it for the timeline
I have just moved on, wasting so much time trying to get a work flow, this app can’t do this, oh this app is IAA only.
Just decided if the app can save the loop or midi file, or works in AUM where I can save the loop, I am happy with that. Just drag it on to logic time line
Don’t care anymore what people might think of my music, not gonna get rich from this hobby
And I have been so much more productive, it’s almost like a weight has been removed. And I think most of the burden was created by myself
So strangely logic has made this happen, so I will be paying monthly for my subscription and will continue to make rubbish music which gives me hours of fun and making music that perhaps only I will ever appreciate
But if AUM time line enters the arena…..
I’ve been on and off the fence like a lot of us, decided to pay for one more month at the last minute - and I agree with you that the smartest approach may well be to let AUM do all the stuff that AUM Is good at - midi routing, IAA hosting etc, and just drag that into logics timeline. Pretty easy with sample crate slide over.
And now with the casual drop of the new KQ loopback app, out of nowhere seemingly, we can record AUM into Logic with ableton link sync! And Alchemy sampler and the beat chopper app are pretty great. And sculpture even with the UI in its current state
I’m definitely in for the time being and feeling pretty good about it right now
Yep I renewed mine today as well, partly due to this. Also being able to use Sculpture, Drum Synth, and Studio Horns/Strings in my AUM jams is exciting.
My main use for DAWs is to dump the stems I record from AUM in them for mastering and adding small flourishes. As well as clip launching. And Logics clip launcher and great built in effects are perfect for that.
My process sees me finish everything in Logic on desktop. I use the iPad to generate ideas, flesh them out a little and then export them over to desktop. I was hopeful when Logic on iPad was announced as I thought this process (with Roundtrip) would make this whole process easier and also allow a little back and forth to what is mostly a one way process at the moment. So far though I’m not really seeing that and am not really sure if I’m offered anything more than Cubasis gives me for this style of working. The wonderful Iceworks plugins certainly help being cross device but sadly auv3’s that I have the desktop equivalent for do not translate when opening an LP iPad project on desktop (I understand the difficulty). I think I also find Cubasis a little more “straightforward” in terms of UI for quickly wanting ideas out.
Just my initial thoughts. Anyone else in a similar situation?
If I want to get down ideas quickly I’m finding Logic to be my first choice lately. I’m more familiar with C3, but I’m liking Logic more and more. I don’t have desktop tho
Biggest friction I have with Cubasis is getting into a rhythm inserting a new AUv3 instrument. The whole detour to delete the default piano never grew on me.
The most interesting with Logic for iPad is that it takes time to discover things - a lot of goodies that “show up” after weeks of use…
Although I have Logic on my Mac (since 2013), I have never really digged deep into Logic even there…
Just the amount of stock plugins are great, both incredible instruments and then both fabulous Audio & MIDI FX in high quality…
To getting into Logic for iPad takes time, and, to read the manual doesn’t hurt, even though try & error seems to be the common way for average user…
All the functionality that lacks, but, in the end already was there, into Logic for iPad, it’s hilarious (I’m also one of those users missed features and had this forum to get answers on my stupid questions)…
Appreciate everyone’s response here. I do think I need to give it more time and may just spring for a year to start with and see how it goes. I really would like to see Roundtrip experience improved somewhat though. I’m also amazed there’s no midi export, not that it affects me as I’m using Logic on desktop (maybe why they have not included it?).
Oh wow I’ve never even noticed that.
For now we can export MIDI the clunky way (but it works well) - I put MIDI Tape Recorder in the MIDI FX slot…
Or you can use Helium Sequencer or other similar apps, but they are much more expensive than MIDI Tape Recorder…
Yeah, already having Logic on the desktop and the practical non-benefit of the theoretically great-sounding roundtrip function definitely played a part in my decision not to continue for now.
BTW I agree about giving them time to optimise these things and come out with some currently missing functions that I need. I just prefer them taking their time on someone else’s money 🙂
You’ve summed up exactly how I feel at the moment!
But, in the same time, if everyone out the cancelled their subscriptions, Apple would freeze the further development of Logic for iPad…
I’ve said it before, even if Apple is a giant corporation, they have shareholder that demands Apples top leader hold their budgets - if not, Apple could employ 1000 software engineers/developers and be no 1 in several others area of software…
I and probably many others buys apps to iPad/iPhone just to support the development, even if we just now and then don’t use that app…
I think apple will clearly have people keeping an eye on the social media response. If they see that people are not subscribing because they are unhappy with the state of Logic 1.0, you can guarantee they will push out improvements quickly. Subbing to fund apple's development is a ridiculous idea. They're a massive corporation with huge amounts of money set aside for R&D, and what they will be spending developing Logic is guaranteed to be almost a laughably small part of their budget. This is Apple lol, the richest corporation ever in the history of humanity, not some indie dev one man shop!
In all honestly the cost for the entire Logic team is likely not even noticeable (<0.00001% of the total operating budget) and is most likely more or less covered by the product marketing budget as it adds value to the brand just like the free GarageBand has done for year, same deal with Keynote, Numbers, Pages etc. etc.
I see iPad Logic and FinalCut more or less as a 'experiments' to see if the market is ready for subscription software, next step is baking in Keynote, Pages, Numbers, iMovie etc. into Apple+ as they are not 'essential' for the function of the operating system.
Time will tell but it's highly like the Apple doesn't give a sh*t if people un-subscribe
Apple+ could that be an subscription to get in all, iCloud 2TB. Logic Mac/iPad. iWorks Mac/iPad, Final Cut Pro, Garageband, xCode, full access to all of beta programs..
We pay $99 per month for this…
