Yeah the synths sound fantastic. Some of the patches in the ES2 and retro synth legitimately sound analog. Sculpture is the real winner for me. Can’t get over how good it is.
For the most part. I still love my RX950, Pitch Drift, and lo-fi-af. 😂 But I love Logic's opto compressor and limiter and LuFS meter.
The mastering effects in logic are the only ones I haven’t tried yet. I’ve got 3 projects in there im working on now 😂 I’ll have to give them a go. Im a sucker for effects so I doubt il lever be full logic
And honestly you don't have to be full Logic mate. Tools are tools, whether you use the ones in Logic or external AUv3 or a combination therein. I know Logic has a bitcrusher already, but honestly I can't live without Beef on the drums nor RX950 on the master. Well done @CaelumAudio !
ChromaVerb is great for bread-and-butter reverbs as well as Ambient reverbs, but it will never replace FAC Alteza for those 3-minute-long shimmer reverb tails. 🤪 Well done @FredAntonCorvest !
And of course most of Logic's internal synths are just okay (except for the exceptional physical modelling one which I've yet to really deep dive into), but I can't live without Buttersynth, Bleass' synths, Zeeon, Hilda, etc. And Logic's "acoustic" instruments are fantastic, but I can't live without Pure Synth Platinum 2, Beathawk, and Module Pro as my romplers.
Most of the time when I EQ, I just use a highpass filter to scoop out the low end. In Logic Pro's single band EQ, the highpass is called the lowcut. Potato po-tah-to. I rarely ever have to dip out other frequencies than the low end on instruments that aren't the (sub, 808, whatever) bass and kick. Sidechain compression with Logic Pro's compressor is a breeze, and once I was helped with my hand held on how to group tracks into their busses, now I'm unstoppable.
My only gripe with Logic Pro is a lack of external sample browsing within the app itself, but luckily that's why I have Sample Crate in slideover mode. Best $2.99 I spent in recent times. It's like a pimped out version of the Files app. 😂
So what was I rambling on about? Right. Not every plugin you use has to be Logic's internal plugins.
Oh I definitely agree. As much as I like logic, outside of Sculpture, a couple effects like the beat cutter, and maybe Sample Alchemy, it’ll mostly just be a host for AUs and a tool to master stems and occasional jams. AUM will still probably get well over half of my attention. I do see the studio horns and strings becoming my main source for those 2 instruments though. They sound fantastic 😯
Seconded with Beef and Alteza. 2 of my favorite effects apps for sure. I’m actually thinking of picking up sample crate right now. I hope apple will update the sample browsing functionality but the app seems useful either way.
I got the idea once I finish a project (using only stock plugin) to duplicate the project and use my own selection of FX like Alteza. So I got 2 version I’df a project in a safe way and can make comparisons.
That’s actually a really good idea! I might do something similar myself. Would be nice to do a direct head to head comparison
Thank you! I pulled in a vocal track that I’d recorded last year and tried some of the patches. Incredibly useful, especially (in my case) compression and pitch correction.
Thank you! Really appreciated 😀✨
Agree Alteza and other great Eventide reverb like BlackHole or Cascade are far better than Chromaverb.
Nothing new as Chromaverb was as it was on Logic Pro Mac. Apple get a chance to other dev companies to do far better FX tools the the stock plugin FX and it is good.
Thank you for your great support 🙏✨
I'm getting great results with Chromaverb using Synth Reverbs - Clean Ambient tails as a starter. Worth a try folks. Getting very similar results to Blackhole reverb.
Chromaverb is great at bread and butter reverbs.
Play with the early/late slider to make it fit your track better. For my taste the presets have too much early in them and it can make it sound metallic. Cut the early reflections a bit and you can get lovely smooth results. EQing out some bass or the 300-400Hz mud can help too. It’s useful having EQ as part of the verb.
Alteza is a different beast and isn’t under threat from chromaverb! But if you just want a room verb for your drums, chromaverb is good.
I love Alteza so I bought it for Mac as soon as it was available.
Chromaverb is Definitely worth exploring — I use it a lot and never use the presets. Is’s dead quick to get good results.
The Chromaverb and the space designer are both really good. Won’t replace all my other verbs but still worth using on occasions. Like you said, it’s great to add some room verb to your tracks.
I am definitely in the “meh” group with regard to Logic’s synths. The sample libraries are good (nice bass), some of the modeling is interesting (cool clav), but this is definitely not a synth production system out of the box, and the stock synth UIs are abysmal. They really want you to use canned grooves and sounds, to the point where - unless I’ve missed something - you can’t even set up a blank MIDI track, but have to go through the multistep rigmarole of inserting the track, deleting the default instrument, getting into the AU menu, etc.
Interesting track building/mixing environment, I guess, but hardly a killer app so far.
Not knocking any of the 3 'verbs you mentioned. However, I don’t think it’s fair to compare Chromaverb to these 'special-sauce' plugins. They aren’t meant for the same uses.
I never said Chromaverb is bad at all but it lack a bit of the spices I like.
Nobody should wait to have all what he want from a stock plugin in a daw I am realistic.
The point is not to compare Chromaverb to other more specific reverb. I prefer for my sauce Alteza that’s a personal taste.
After clicking the plus for a new track, click the 3 dots on the (in your example) midi track dialog, and that will let you create the track with the synth you want and no preset loaded. After you’ve done it once it defaults to the same next time you do it.
You can load empty instruments, instrument presets, or track presets with presets and channel strip configs saved. It’s a really flexible system that I’ve come to really like the more I use it.
The real wow-synth in Logic Pro for me is Alchemy.
BUT, I’ve got problem with Alchemy - when I use the grid and moving around that eight-grid play surface when playing, Logic crash after a while…
Can someone else here test Alchemy with some patches and draw around the grid for some time - interesting if it’s my iPad who’s the problem…
More about Alchemy Synth in Logic Pro for iPad - on my Mac in Logic I have approximately around 3000 patches to Alchemy, but, on the iPad I have only 62 patches?/
Can someone else here check the amount of patches into iPad Alchemy Synth?
Have I an missed installations of Logic?
Some of he packs also contain Alchemy presets, these are 'track presets' using Alchemy so you won't find them when you use the 'plug-in' presets when opening Alchemy...
Look at instrument patches and filter by Alchemy.
Ok, thanks for that!
Do you have any crashes when using Alchemy and in the same time flipping around with your finger in the grid (this 8 thing - forgotten what the real name is)?
Only crashes I've had with Logic Pro for iPad are when using 3rd party AUv3's and editing/removing audio in a Take Folder.
Other than that it's been stable. (I'm pushing the AUv3's hard as my intention is to throughly test all the AUv3's I current have installed).
Ok…
Alchemy is crashing Logic with certain patches when I use the X-Y-grid, but, if I automate the same movement in the piano roll, Logic running well…
I’m on iPadOS 17 beta 1 so perhaps that can be the reason of the Logic crashing…
Would not be at all surprised since the Core UI Frameworks, Graphics Drivers etc. are being updated...
OS Beta Software should never be seen as 'stable' and for 'every day use'. That is why I never do OS betas...
...I've been burnt way too many times with bricked devices forcing a total re-install to get back to a 'stable' state.
