Blackhole or Cascade?

I need a cosmic, big reverb for ambient and emulation of large spaces. I choose from these two. Would like to know your opinion?

  • Cascade hands down.

Cascade could use more presets, but it's easy to use and can be used to create some sophisticated reverb effects.

  • I always found Blackhole to be too heavy 'sounding'. Too Thicc! Need to spend more time with Cascade, but it's definitely more flexible.

  • I couldn't resist and bought both) I'm now comparing them head-to-head for about an hour. in my opinion, blackhole is about sound, and cascade is about modulation. bh sounds more natural and richer, more 3d. cascade is noisier, resulting in more pronounced tails, with greater modulation capabilities.

I use more Cascade for ambient , BlackHole for electro house or EDM , personal taste. Cascade is exactly what you say it is more for modulation.

  • Cake or pie? Both, please!

  • (…with Alteza sauce on top…)

    No wonder I’m chonky.

  • Yeah I would have suggested Alteza given the “need”

Blackhole and Cascade are both great also, but if you don’t have Alteza you’re missing out!

Both are really good, get both if you have the means

  • I’m interested in the consensus with this question as well. Woulda been cool to add a poll.

    Alteza is sweet.
I’m flush with reverb options and I’m not in a rush, but I’ve been thinking about getting one of these two apps. Blackhole forever, but cascade since release. Since they’ve been compared on some level I’m curious, if you could only get one of the two?

  • Both are great … they both have their uniqueness and tricks up their sleeve, and I’m yet to use Cascade as much as I’ve used Blackhole, but they are both highly capable of creating the large spaces you’re after.

  • Both, I always use Blackhole but Cascade a lot more since it's came out. It's so good!

I think Blackhole has a richer sound imo. Cascade has a ton more modulation options and tricks to design all kinds of crazy effects.

If I had to choose only one of these two, I’d pick Blackhole because I know I can rely on it in its initialized state, without having to really tweak anything. Just load it up with the initial preset and you’ve got lush space.

Very different beasts. Yeah Cascade can at some extend substitute BlackHole but if you want that classic huge space with just few tweaks BlackHole is simpler to use.

Cascade on other side is very deep tool and reverb are jus tone of things it can do - also various delays and phaserish-flangerish-chorus alike sounds are possible

So Cascade is for more elaborate sound design, BlackHole just for quick “gimme that huge intergalactic space”

    Both great plugins.

  • For a straight ahead reverb I prefer Blackhole but as an overall effect, Cascade is brilliant. It can do so much more. Both are great for swallowing your sound though.

I would agree with this. For just a big, lovely reverb, I tend to load Blackhole default patch and turn the mix down. Job done! Alteza is great for more creamy sounding big spaces with a bit of shimmer. Again I often just use the default patch but tweak the wet and dry values to make it a bit drier. Cascade I see more for sound design or getting special effects, especially interesting little delay/reverb combo effects or some of that flangy phasey goodness that Dendy was talking about. Don't forget to pick up Slush's excellent, free preset pack for Cascade posted elsewhere on the forum. I'm sure a Google search will turn it up

BlackHole is for preset guys indeed. My go to BH, Cascade , Alteza and Crystalline.

I’ll have to grab that preset pack up! I agree though. That’s why I never got the only having 1-2 reverbs and that’s it kind of thinking. I have so many and they all have their own use cases and unique abilities. Blackhole, MangledVerb, Crystalling, MagicVerb, EOS, Alteza, etc etc. Love them all

  • Here are the 35 Cascade presets I created, if you like: https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/55645/cascade-35-presets#latest

I have both but hardly use Blackhole. It’s a great reverb but a little too studio perfect for my taste sometimes. I am extremely difficult with reverbs, I like something vintage, hard to put a finger on. Before Cascade I used Altispace a lot, but Cascade is my goto now. It can do so much and has that kind of vintage flavor.

What about Noise Audio’s Adverb 2? For me, it sounds sweet.

Cascade replaced Velvet for me, and mostly used them before gate sequencers. Eventide Blackhole and ShimmerVerb is pure magic of space reverbs. As everyone else suggested, buy them all! ;) Eventide having sales as we speak.

    Cascade replaced Velvet for me/

It took me a long time to finally get to 'Velvet'. 'And within days, 'Cascade' was released. I did momentarily regret laying out for V, until I started placing it in the chain, before C. Shaping the signal (especially the attack) before sending it into the 'tail' makes for a great little combo ;)

  • Anyone remember... Lunar Lander? That was a real opportunity missed by the developer.

Yes, they are after all different FX. I am still using Velvet, love to stretch bass before starting to mangle with FF Vulcan or SugarBytes WoW.

Yeah it was cool while it lasted!

    I think I still have it installed…

Wow, it still works, and so far, works fine in Logic!
