Which app for Techno iOS novice?

Hi Forum

I’m going to a birthday for an old friend who is into techno and house ( and ambient)

I used to make tracks with him long before iOS was invented. He was a great producer with great taste, but is now busy with another career and has no time for his hardware. I know his heart is still into music.

I’m considering giving him a few apps for his iPhone ( don’t now if he has an iPad). They should be easy and fun to use, but more than toys.

I can’t afford more than around 30$/€

It would be ideal with an app that could export tracks to his Mac but I think AUM is too complicated.
The same with “Groove Rider”

He would love the sound of “Hilda”
Maybe the simplicity of “Koala”
Combined with a generator like Cykle or Polybeat. But then he still need a host?

Another idea could be a copy of Futuredrummer.

Any suggestions of great combinations? Ideally 1-2 apps so he doesn’t have to spend too much time learning the apps.

Thanks

  • I would say Ampify Groovebox, Pure Acid and Koala together would fit the bill. Any combination of two or all three. They all have their own sequencer and have Ableton Link to keep them all in time.

  • Ableton Note?
Note: I am not iPhone user and don’t own Ableton Note. (Why am I here…)

Korg Gadget ? Or Nanostudio should work perfectly cause in techno you don't need record long audio tracks of guitars or vocals :))) but you need lot of synthesis and heavy FX processing including grouping, paralellel processing and stuff like that ...

But if Groove Rider is too complicated for him i am afraid there is not much choices to to get sufficient enough quality result... I wiyld say Groove Rider is almost on the edge, to make proper modern sounding techno innit can be pretty tough job.

Some suggestions mentioned above like Koala are imho not good - that's just sampler and quite limited in terms of processing, not ideal choice for modern techno - like yeah it's doable when you want just glue together premade samples but that's not how modern techno is made.

Also things like Ampify Groovebox are too limited in terms of FX processing and Pure acid is good just in case you want to do oldschool detroit acid-like techno.

It really depends on what exactly kind of techno he wants to do .. People often think "techno" is just 4/4 909 kick and some repetitive drums and bassline and that's it but that can't be more far from reality :)))

  • Thank You for all the suggestions.
He really likes unique sound design, so I guess Ambify Groovebox is too “presetpack” dependent…

Ableton Note is for Ableton users only?

I’ll check Groove Rider once again.

    He would love Hilda!
    Which companion app would fit?

He won’t make finished tracks…but building blocks/sounds/beats for export to Mac

well, in that case maybe Ampify Groovebox may be useable - it's simple, straigforward, it can export in Ableton Live format or just as wav stems so definitely useable for this .. it has actually pretty decent sounding synths inside ..

you may buy few packs with presets / drums sounds relatad for techno which increases usability but in general it's not needed - it has actual synths so you can tweak your own sounds

but also Korg Gadget .. even Gadget Lite which is completely free .. again, it has Live export or wav stems export and it's sequencer is loop based - so for making raw material for techno for later processing in mac is very good choice too

    You mean Drambo + Hilda?
    Drambo is 😎 but 🤯

  • Bram Bos Noir is what you are looking for, maybe coupled with Drambo.

Drambo jeez.. that is definitely not simple app for this purpose :-)) If AUM/GR16 is too complicated for guy, then Drambo will kill him in second ... It's overcomplicated even for me, and i make music on iPad for 13 years :)))))

Dude needs something which looks and feelis like actual HW .. simple, with all (or most of) controls immediately on the screen) .. Hilda, Noir, Troublemaker, Ripplemaker as simple one purpose grooveboxes, Novation Groovebox, Gadget for more complex stuff ..

Also IMPAKTOR may be nice source of interesting grooves ! Old app but still very useable for this purpose.

I do wonder what people find complicated about Drambo?

It can go deep sure but is pretty basic/user friendly on the surface to me.

  • Also old Tabletop may work, try show it to him ..

    Yeah ! great choice

It's like Octatrack in HW world .. very powerful but you must spend a LOT of time in "preparation" phase to set up and connect all things like you want before you can start do actual music .. And if you leave it for some time and then return back to it, you need re-learn many things again from scratch.

Which is completely ok if you enjoy it, nothing agains that (even through honestly if i want to go complex/modular, i pick rather miRack) - but it's definitely not for everybody and definitely not for beginner. Especially not for guy for who AUM/GR16 is too complicated

Some people just prefer straightforward approach, like you run app (or HW) and you can immediately make music ... That's why some people prefer Digitakt before Octatrack, even through it's rather limited.

  • Not sure if it’s on the iOS but this is pretty simple.

I think genuinely you could get him Hilda, aum, Rozeta suite and maybe ruismaker noir? Might take u over 30 euros though.

My aum tutorial would give him the basics in an hour!

  • Guess you could leave Rozeta suite out as both noir and Hilda have their own sequencers anyway?

What's the cheapest sidechain app? Pumphouse can hack a kind of sidechain, right? He'll want to sidechain if he's making techno probably

AD Roughrider 3 if I'm not mistaken, it's free and does side-chain.

  • Maybe get together with your friend and have a GarageBand session before spending any money or worrying about what to choose?

BeatHawk also covers a lot of territory. The sound packs are very reasonable and it exports to Ableton Live - https://apps.apple.com/app/id839563064

AudioKit has some cheap and cheerful apps like their 909 drum machine and 808 bass synth - https://apps.apple.com/developer/id1307785645

The AudioKit AR909 timing is a mess. I’d wait for the promised update to see if the problems are finally fixed before purchasing.

For sidechaining, Bleass Compressor and Bleass Sidekick should both be contenders.

I’d stick with AUv3 apps, rather than IAA (which is on its way out the back door)

AUM is a cool host, and if he has any experience with a hardware mixer, the concept is the same, so should pick it up in no time. Watch @Gavinski tutorials, it’s easy. Inputs at the top, outputs at the bottom, fx, and/or sends in between, and buss channels are straight forward
AudioShare goes hand in hand with AUM, for recorded files

  • Koala with all the IAPs if the person has any kind of interest in using samples...
...that's one of the few app I've seen people buy on the spot once they see it in action :sunglasses:

  • This guy is looking for something simple to jam on and that’s it. We would make different choices based on our needs and experience.

Wow - impressed with your help 👍

Lots of good suggestions. I’ll look into each. I’m afraid I might give him a gift he will never use. Maybe it is better to give him a gift card for a day in my real hardware studio ( though giftcards are “meeeh”). It could be a mix of a track, or a coach session in AUM / searching for the right apps for him.

He has a lot of samples and custom sound design/ field recordings already ( Mac/logic user) so maybe Koala is the most immediate for him ( as a gift). Bonus is easy transfer to Mac. Then - if he enjoys it, I could guide him into AUM, iOS synths etc.

    How about:
I create a couple of building blocks in my copy of Koala. Beats, stabs, etc

I gift him Koala + my sounds

I dare him to remix it in Koala.

We transfer the files to my hardware and mix it together in one fun livesession

Negative: we will never find the time 🤨

Exactly. It is a big bonus

  • Endless is free and you would be able to collaborate together remotely

    https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/endlesss-multiplayer-music/id1439811325

  • Ampify Groovebox is free.

Also Blocs Wave (it has IAP for audio import for $6).

  • Figure is free…

FL Studio Mobile is an all in one solution but doesn’t load external effects /instruments

Logic is $5 a month and has everything you need, but I can’t get to be creative with it.

GrooveRider is super easy! It’s a great little groovebox.

Ableton note is very hands on.

It’s hard to know what will he like.

  • Audiomodern Playbeat 3 has some excellent Techno sounds packs, with just the right techno rumble, for example, and it can generate variations to keep things interesting.

  • A $30 appstore giftcard and a nice sit-down session with him. Maybe talk with him about the apps already mentioned here and see what he thinks.

My recommendation would be to try Logic Pro for a month. It really does have everything one needs to make Techno.

By the way, happy birthday to your friend. :)

  • I make techno as well. Honestly, Hilda, Ruismaker Noir and Hammerhead are such an awesome trio. They all have sequencers. Can be hosted in free GarageBand. Add some free FX. You’re rolling!
