Drambo jeez.. that is definitely not simple app for this purpose :-)) If AUM/GR16 is too complicated for guy, then Drambo will kill him in second ... It's overcomplicated even for me, and i make music on iPad for 13 years :)))))

Dude needs something which looks and feelis like actual HW .. simple, with all (or most of) controls immediately on the screen) .. Hilda, Noir, Troublemaker, Ripplemaker as simple one purpose grooveboxes, Novation Groovebox, Gadget for more complex stuff ..

I do wonder what people find complicated about Drambo?

It can go deep sure but is pretty basic/user friendly on the surface to me.

Agreed. Just watch a couple short youtube tutorials focusing on the sequencer and a basic overview. It can be very quick to grasp if you don’t try to dive into the modular toolkit right away.

I started out only using it as an AUV3 instrument host , with the occasional insert effect or two—very basic stuff. I think the Drambo sequencer is one of the most intuitive and fun to use on iOS. Was easier to understand and edit than GR-16 or even Pure Acid sequencers were at first.

  • Ampify Groovebox for sure…Very easy to understand and quickly get amazing sounding results.

Drambo if they have the patience to read/watch a few tutorials and challenge themselves. It’ll be more capable & rewarding in the long run and something to grow into.

I started with Drambo last Monday. I watched a few YouTube videos, asked a few questions here and there from this great forum community and now I am working with Drambo quite easily. It’s an awesome app. You can do most anything with it. Some apps need a little learning but it’s part of the creative process. I think some apps that are too easy,, can get boring fast. It sounds great, AUV3 with 8 individual outs, not expensive for what it offers, has audio export, powerful step sequencer and it has many great tools for music production. It can be as simple as you want or as deep and advanced as you want, Just my thoughts..

  • Wow, thanks to those that mentioned it for bringing my attention to Hilda. Looks amazing.

Not 100% but yes they use Garageband for some things. Cross just destroyed everything else at the time, what an album.

I think Cross was all in Garageband, but later albums incorporated GB for some things but were compiled in Cubase. I could be wrong though, but any further info I search for on Google I can't seem to find, so all I can do right now is speculate.

Gaspard’s album Escapades is also brilliant.

    Facts!

Trying to do microsampling like Justice in iOS Garageband would make me have a stroke. 😂

Hahaha, same here! 😂 Would be a right pain, that. Would be easier to microsample in Logic iPad, Cubasis 3, or easiest of all...Beatmaker 3.

Yep I think people underestimate how many people have used iPads and GarageBand for projects. Steve Lacy made all of his early work in GB and I think still uses it to this day. Madlib, one of the best producers ever, has been all iOS since 2017/18 and made multiple Grammy nominated albums and singles with it. Gorillaz made most of an album with an iPad. Bon Iver, Dua Lipas producer, the list goes on. It’s nice to see and I think that list is gonna grow and grow.

Absolutely fascinating. I wonder if Gaspard or Xavier would ever experiment with an iPad in Garageband or gave it a go in the past. I mean, Koala would be the perfect app (both standalone and AUv3) for all that microsampling they do, and Hilda for those sick electro basses they'd come up with.

That Gorillaz album "The Fall" produced on iOS back in...I think it was 2010/2011...wasn't as good as everything else they've made, but at least they made a go of it back in the days before Audiobus came about, and it has Bobby Womack (aka "Across 110th Street") on it! And who doesn't love Bobby Womack?!

And yeah, Madlib did go all iOS (I forgot what his main DAW app is, probably Cubasis). Bon Iver is also a legend as well. :)

Bon Iver had the classic op-1/iPad workflow that I had for a while and now sorely miss. Of course it was just used occasionally but I know the OP-1 is all over that 22 a Million album. Hence I’m saving up for the Field 😂

Oh stop! You're gonna give me GAS for that blasted OP-1 Field again, and I honestly don't want that. 🤣 Lol.

The Gorillaz is one of my all time favorite bands. The Fall isn’t their best but I really really appreciate the effort.

I feel the same way about the Gorillaz! Just an amazing band, amazing musical output. I often played "Demon Days" when making digital art, although these days I listen to a bunch of Lofi HipHop playlists on Spotify when making digital art. But ah, Danger Mouse. 😎 One incredible producer.

As for Madlib I’m not 100%. I know the song he produced for Kanye, No More Parties in LA was gone in GarageBand. I think he uses it often. I feel like I also read Koala but I could be wrong. BM3 would make sense too.

BM3 would definitely make sense, and I could see Justice using that for their microsampling. And Garageband is such fun to work in on my iPhone and my Mini 6. Logic Pro is where I create some ideas, Garageband for other ideas, but all finished in Logic Pro these days.

If you haven’t yet, check out their most recent 2 albums. Song Machine and Cracker Island. They’re among the best of their discography, imo. Really really good.

I was super into BM2/3 when they first came out then stopped using it but I’ve been diving back in lately and I forgot just how powerful it is. I mostly use it as an MPC type thing rather than a DAW like some do, and it’s must less frustrating that way 😂

Freddie Gibbs talked about it a good bit in an interview. He said he was expecting to see a big hardware rig and instead Madlib walked in with an iPad mini and had everything for the album on it and worked on the rest in front of him. I’ll see if I can find that interview. I’m sure it was all mastered professionally but still cool, imo.

I did a quick search when I heard about this, and someone else spotted an iMaschine sample. Also, MSXII spotted him using Chomplr.

Of course, this was years ago, and it probably doesn't matter much what you chop up samples with. Chomplr does have some great old-school, soulful sample packs that are Madlib's style, but I'd have to guess that Koala w/ Samurai IAP and Samplr are better choices for sample chopping. There are plenty of alternatives, too.

What were we talking about? Oh yeah...techno.

He is the type that would rather pay someone to setup everything - ready for making Music - than spending valuable time on setup.

Remixlive might be a good fit - https://apps.apple.com/app/id1058801458

The same developer also makes a DJ apps such as Cross DJ Pro.

As for Madlib I’m not 100%. I know the song he produced for Kanye, No More Parties in LA was gone in GarageBand. I think he uses it often. I feel like I also read Koala but I could be wrong. BM3 would make sense too.

Besides Madlib’s Tweet about creating Bandana on iPad I haven’t seen much info about it. Would be interesting to see what/how he uses.

I did spot a stock vocal sample from Korg Gadget in one of his tracks:
    https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/comment/1179128/#Comment_1179128

I did a quick search when I heard about this, and someone else spotted an iMaschine sample. Also, MSXII spotted him using Chomplr.

Of course, this was years ago, and it probably doesn't matter much what you chop up samples with. Chomplr does have some great old-school, soulful sample packs that are Madlib's style, but I'd have to guess that Koala w/ Samurai IAP and Samplr are better choices for sample chopping. There are plenty of alternatives, too.

What were we talking about? Oh yeah...techno.

Let me explain: He is a very very good DJ (local legend) and 15 years ago, he owned a record shop selling club vinyls. I made several tracks with him in my studio. He had exceptionally good ideas and taste but never touched the machinery,
and he was more like an Old School producer than a (app) nerd.
He is the type that would rather pay someone to setup everything - ready for making Music - than spending valuable time on setup.

Remixlive might be a good fit - https://apps.apple.com/app/id1058801458

The same developer also makes a DJ apps such as Cross DJ Pro.

I do love Chomplr but it would require some extra midi connections to really make the most of it as it has no real pads, but the chopping is cool and it’s kinda unique. Koala is way better for sure.

Also regarding the techno stuff, Launchpad and Groovebox are cool too. All of Ampifys apps really. Remixlive is cool but I gotta say from my time using it, it was a bit glitchy and less polished than Launchpad. Some of the effects just didn’t work.

I hadn't heard that about Remixlive, but I'll take your word for it. I believe it is more feature-rich with its drum grid, step sequencer, timeline, etc. They're all freemium apps, so easy enough to check out to see if there is any interest.

For sure more feature rich. And it’s not a bad app. There were just a decent bit of effects that when used, would just cut the sound off completely and glitch out. Tried to contact the dev but it either got dodged or I never heard back. They seem active though so maybe it’s fixed now 🤷🏻‍♂️

Now he works in a totally other business, but it could be fun to reconnect through Music again.

In that case I think Endlesss.fm would be perfect, really easy to use, and the FX are very live /remix oriented so you can start by just remixing what the other person/people do while you get a handle on it, and you can jam together over the internet. He could start off recording in some of his records and you could work together on a remix. And it's free! It hosts plugins too, so you could get some synths/drum machines as well. On iPad/iPhone touch screen the auto-quantise creates a kind of illusion of being able to 'feel' the beat, so it kind of guides you to the beat without needing a metronome. The stock factory sounds aren't too bad either, especially drums and bass. I pretty much hate most of the melody sounds though. ;-)

Pure Acid is probably a good companion for classic 303/808/909 sounds with the same kind of interface, with some cool FX too

Monolit by Bleass is a good free synth too, I love all the Bleass stuff, some great audio FX

I really like Drum Computer and the other Sugar Bytes stuff, but they are comparatively pricey. Elastic Drums is very cool and made for techno.

I think Logic is worth considering too, he could just stick to the Live loops and step sequencer to start with, and the tutorial content walks you through everything, and the factory sound content is more than enough to get going, and Apple Loops make it pretty easy. The new plugins Beat Breaker and Sample Alchemy are very cool and really make the most of the touch screen. You get a free 1 month trial to check it out. You'd never need anything else.

But if nothing else, I think Endlesss is your best bet, then you can jam together and remix the old records.

I think it's really that it can look a bit overwhelming at first. I keep finding I load it up and then think nah, I'm gonna have to spend too long figuring it all out. It's not really immediate.

  • @robosardine said:
I would say Ampify Groovebox, Pure Acid and Koala together would fit the bill. Any combination of two or all three. They all have their own sequencer and have Ableton Link to keep them all in time.

This is a really good list!

FYI: GrooveRider as apps go is not complicated, anything half decent will require some learning investment, pureAcid is a good gateway app to GR.

AUM i think is a must (or audiobus/loopy). Gadget is cool but it's a walled garden. Drambo or logic too complicated (but the best!) As for cost.. wait for sales (see sales thread), ios app are Great for those on limited budgets during sales.

  • I just saw this on Instagram.
Drambo and Grooverider are used for this techno live set it seems. Not sure if it helps with the decision but I find it interesting to see the apps in action.

Fwiw I started with Drambo and knew pretty much nothing about working with modular synths but after a short time I was able to create patches (nothing fancy) and start jamming even faster than in Gr-16 ( but that might just me not getting along with the workflow). But as others already said I would also suggest Gadget, Grooverider GR-16 and NS2 for an easy, fast and stable workflow.

Endless is a good recommendation. Download endless, search the App Store for free AUV3s, and you’re set.

  • Sunrizer is a GREAT choice, as is Poison 202, Pure Acid, and (surprisingly) Redshrike, which with a little mild tweaking can sound like the great lost 80s synth you never knew you needed.
