what problem ?
I had to change it to make it work for Logic’s labyrinthine mechanisms it is broken everywhere else too.
Just put somewhere in config switch in configuration like
"Normal mode for properly implemented hosts"
"Special mode for broken Logic implementation"
Eventually adjust text if you want to be less confrontative but still clear that Logic devs are who screwed things.
I swear i being iOS dev this is what i would do. F**k Apple.
Then why not completely dump the iPad while you're at it
Cursing at Apple will not change anything it's just waste of energy...
I may not like Apple yet i may still use their HW cause there is simply no other option, no alternative. I do not see anything wrong about that. I am not classic Apple fanboy, that is something i had to admit. I don't like a LOT of things thy do (or they don't), but i am also pragmatic and there is just no other option for mobile music making.
I have enormous respect to all devs who are making all that amazing apps for us even through apple is throwing all kinds of obstacles on them all the time.
Ditto! It's an amazing platform with a few minor niggles and works amazingly well over all.
It's just way too easy (at least for me) to get stuck in the few issues that do NOT work.
As for music creation related apps, considering it's a real minority user-group (I would guess <0.01% of total iOS/iPad user base) I have at least a little understanding why some areas of the developer documentation might be a bit lacking and I guess no one has really demanded anything and the documentation remains a 'wish'. The way LogicPro uses private API's to configure audio-devices could be a case to bring up and demand documentation on how it is implemented as it gives Apple an unfair advantage.
The obstacles thrown in the way are quite often 'side effects' of security related additions and since iOS/iPadOS is after all a 'mobile' operating system overall security is way more important than 'breaking a few apps', sad but true.
Sure I would not mind an 'advanced user' switch in iOS/iPadOS to unlock certain features but that will likely never happen.
(If the end-user would do something 'stupid' they would rather just blame Apple instead of looking in the mirror).
Cheers!
I may be wrong from from my brief understanding they are just using this API for that (i think)
https://developer.apple.com/documentation/audiodriverkit
can somebody with non M1 cpu confirm if is possible to choose different sound devices for inout and output ? In case it is bit that my confirm my theory cause that API is available just for M1 devices
Comments on ABF:
"Logic iPad is great even if you don't like it or use it because it breathes new life into the platform, motivating other devs to do more and better, etc-etc"
Reality check:
Exactly. Logic isn’t a blessing - at all. We were doing much better off without it
Precisely this. A jerk of a company with mostly mediocre software but often great hardware (there are exceptions to both parts of that definition 🙂) - and, unfortunately, the only realistic option for mobile music making.
As Logic runs on any iPad A12 and up with the option to disable disable automatic audio device configuration it's more than likely a private API. Don't know which device @j_liljedahl is using for AUM development and testing but it's a no-can-do on those devices but works in Logic...
That "we" is doing some heavy lifting in that sentence 🙂 as we clearly have quite a few very happy customers on this forum alone
why you think it is not possible ? Just because other app doesn’t allow that it doesn’t mean it’s not possible..
I still feel like i already saw in some obscure app same thing (possibility to select different hw devices for input and output) just can’t remember which one it was ..
This forum revels in misery.
Are you kidding? I just joined and I LOVE it here. I wouldn’t know half of what I do without it
You can easily do that with devices that offer either input only or output only, the problem pops up when you have devices that offer both input and output.
On devices with a physical headphone jack you can temporarily override the USB output by connecting the headphones to the 3.5mm jack. (I used this extensively with BM3 when I was still using the UR-242 with iPad Air 2).
There might be a way to 'hack around' this but it'll likely break with an os update if there are changes to the private apis.
We'll have to wait and see if more apps implement device selection in the future.
I suspect this audio device thing will be part of iOS/iPadOS17 APIs when they are finalized and ship later on this year.
Cheers!
There is an API to list and select between available inputs, but not outputs. For outputs we can only show the system “AirDrop” view which allows to switch between internal speaker, Bluetooth headphones, AirPlay etc. but when the user selects another device there, it also switches the input to the same device, if it has one. So for example you can already have the internal mic as input, and a Bluetooth speaker as output, in AUM.
oh, ok understand ..
