Suggestions for a Specific iPadOS Plate Reverb Sound?

I’m looking for a specific plate reverb sound. In the movie clips of The Beatles in Abbey Road studio, I can really hear that plate reverb when they’re sitting talking, but it’s amazing how it blends right in when they start singing. The sound is always up close, almost transparent, and never distant like they’re in a valley or an echo chamber.

That’s the plate reverb sound I’m looking for. Any suggestions, please? Thanks!

  • I never heard a plate as perfect as the Wendy Carlos EMT Plate in Altiverb, I wonder if the impulse response for that EMT plate would sound as good or good enough in Thafknar or Altispace - for me it's the perfect plate. Otherwise perhaps one of the 2 Mixbox Sunset Sound plates?
I never got on well with Logic's Space Designer plate, too big and bright but you could always audition for yourself, and perhaps it just needs tweaking.

I'll wait to see what anyone else suggests as far as if any of the algorithmic verbs (Fabfilter, Toneboosters, FAC etc) are up to the task of a convincing and usable plate. But for me it's the Wendy Carlos, and possibly the Mixbox Sunset Sound.

  • You’re looking for an EMT 140. There are certainly IR’s of that one floating around on the Internet.

Impulsation has an EMT 244 that may be close? Another one to look into would be AltiSpace 2, although in my short search I can’t find a list of included reverb IR’s.

  • Time is just around 6 minutes, or right before

If one has an IR, it will sound identical in THAFKNAR as in Altiverb...probably true for any convolution app. Altiverb IRs use a proprietary format. So, if one has Altiverb, you have to re-sample IRs you want to use on the iPad.

with the caveat that it's only identical up until you then tweak any controls in your particular convolution app. so in altiverb having damping of separate low mid and high, which given it is damping is a very separate thing to bass and treble controls, and the bright control, and the further EQ and the reverb time and further shaping of the room size which can make the IR actually behave as smaller, which is all quite different to say the convolution plugin in reaper which is pretty much whatever that space sounded like is how you get to use it, no tweaks.

  • Here you can buy some good ETM plate reverbs irs https://pasttofuturereverbs.gumroad.com/?query=emt

Sure. And I believe if you re-sample with the settings you want, you will get a good facsimile of the altered behavior.

  • Audio Damage ADverb2 … best Plate reverb on iOS.

After all the suggestions here and the ones I read from past forum posts on here,
    I took a chance on these 3:

    ADverb2
Eos 2 (complete copy of the desktop version says the Developer)
    ToneBoosters Reverb

ADverb2 presets sound amazing without any tweaking
Eos 2 presets also sound amazing, which includes an EMT style plate preset
TB Reverb presets sound mild, but there are lots of ways to tweak this reverb’s sound

I was going to get the BLEASS Reverb, too, but no one recommended it for a plate reverb sound.

No, I wouldn’t recommend BLEASS for a plate reverb sound.

Bleass Reverb is amazing but not for Plate sounds.TB Reverb is definitely more mild at first but can get very crazy if you want it to.

As @dendy said, Adverb is THE plate reverb on iOS. It’s one of my favorite reverbs in general honestly.

One more suggestion would be MagicVerb. Most of the models are chamber reverbs but it does include a plate reverb that’s also fantastic.

  • MiRack has the Valley plate reverb, I have seen some amazing demos from it.

  • Have someone here bought Altispace v2?

Earlier, years ago, I loved Altispace v1, but it was not AUv3, but it sounds great!

The problem with Altispace - isn’t the developer from Russia?
There are a known boycott against Russia for their war against Ukraine…

Igor, the dev, also made Sound Saw, Glitchscaper, Soundscaper, Spacefields, etc etc. A LOT of really great apps. Also just because he’s based in Russia doesn’t mean he supports the war or Putin or anything the government does. Doesn’t mean he shouldn’t make money from his work or great apps. Unless of course something comes out on the contrary or says explicitly that he’s in support. Let’s hope not.

  • I'm pretty sure Igor doesn't live in Russia.

Seriously, we are all chess pieces of our governments. Stop that 24/7 media narrative. Sanctions always hit the wrong people.

  • MixBox has the sunset sound plates and the older CSR Plates too.

The Plates reverb is kind of like the Lexicon PCM91 plate. Ish. It's an old fx now but sounds cool if you like the old 80s/90s lexicon plate sound. Kinda. ;-) I quite like the CSR reverbs -- not state of the art but kind of familiar sounding.

    Sunset sound is very good.

Aren’t those IAPs within Mixbox that aren’t included in the full unlock?

The standard CSR Plates module is included. Sunset modules are extra.

Yeah, Igor does not deserve to be boycotted for the actions of his country's government. If we were going to do that, there would be few countries we could buy apps from, frankly. Certainly Apple, with its connections to both the US and China would be deserving of boycott.

  • There's a few AUv3 impulse response apps like Impulsation by Gospel Musicians, AltiVerb 2 and even Nembrini has one. When I want a character reverb, which is what I'd call the Abbey Road EMT plate or the Abbey Road chamber, I'll use IR files usually with Impulsation. It seems to give me the least rejection of IR files than the others.

Like drum samples, if you want free IR files they're out there online you just have to dig a bit. It's worth the time to Google for awhile, there's good stuff out there.

But, AltiVerb newest edition are 800 dollar, pretty much for a reverb…

Are there any reverb apps to iPad that loads external IR-files?

PREFACE: As I’m writing this, my city government (Dallas, Texas) is being held hostage by Russian hackers, as are many other places in the U.S., right now.

Let the Russian developers speak for themselves. I’ve no doubt, there are plenty of decent Russian developers here.

For dead Ukrainians it’s not a government chess game or media narrative.

Lucky for me my parents weren’t killed.
Yes, Hitler’s war civilian terrorism, like Putin’s, hit the wrong people.
    On that, we agree.

No more politics, please. We don’t know each others experiences in this world..

Impulsation, AltiSpace 2, and Thafknar all load external IR’s. The award goes to Thafknar because it can load quad wav files (but it also has the worst GUI).

My Yamaha piano sounded fantastic through ADverb2.

Between the recommendations here and the ones mentioned by Logan Wilson in his AUM Basic Tutorial, I’ve been feeding the App Store and a lot of developers this week. And it all started from buying Audiobus. 😆
