Some of you probably know that insta has started a rival to twitter.

Apparently:

Threads will become part of the decentralised social web by using the same protocol as Mastodon

You can sign in using your Insta account (or make a separate account, you can but if you sign in via Insta you can quickly follow the same ppl you were following on insta and get them to follow you

It will not be available in the EU - wtf? Anyone know why?

It does collect your data, unlike Mastodon

Mastodon, overall, thinks it is good that big platforms are adopting the ActivityHub decentralised protocol.

It feels good to give Elon a kick up the arse (though it doesn't feel good to be thinking of the gratification Zuckerberg may get from that)

Anyway, here's my profile on Threads:

Since I haven't used Twitter in forever and likely won't ever again, this might be better. We'll see.

  • Haven’t gone back to Instagram since getting an email some years ago that my account had been irrevocably deleted due to not complying with terms of service.

Barely even use Facebook as once in a while I get banned for comments I make that their AI interprets as hate posts or violence because it doesn’t understand irony or sarcasm. For example, the last one was because I made a joke about technophobes wanting to see inventors of new technologies burned at the stake.

Not sure I need another one…

I don’t even download music apps if they contain suspicious tracking. Having seen the list of data that Threads wants to get its hands on then I am steering well away. I might install it on a burner phone (after wiping it and using it for nothing else) if most of the interesting Twitter traffic ends up there.

  • I’m looking forward to seeing Elon Musk pummel and crush Zuckerberg… in their rumored MMA-style exhibition match. There’s no way I’d ever join a Zuck social media app. At least Musk is into exposing corrupt political actors, whereas Zuck is actively selling out his customers.

  • I don't like either of those guys, but my money would definitely be on Zuckerberg if that match goes ahead, he's some kind of Capoeira expert apparently

I watched a series of training videos with him and various sparring partners and I was not impressed.

Yeah, pretty bloody excessive lol. ‘Sensitive info’…wtf is that? Is that the Eye of Sauron I see?

  • This fresh hell might be just the push I need to dump all my social media, maybe keep Instagram, or return to tumblr, at least there’s some focus to be found there…too many platforms and choice

    Such a nice list

  • If you want really censorship resistant social network you need to use someone which is runing on parallel infeastructure and it is not dependent on services like Amazon AWS and other .. otheewise it always ends in some form of regultion/censorship by gov. In reality iťs no different from twitter.

Try Nostr. This is protocol / social nerwork running on Bitcoin network which is most decentralized existing network on planet.

There are multiple clients and new are still developed, for iOS devices currently this:
    https://apps.apple.com/sk/app/plebstr-nostr-client/id1666230916

    for android:
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plebstr.client&hl=en&gl=US&pli=1

Another advantage is that it allows users ro sent wach other micro oaymenrs, like “tips” (it’s called “zaps” there) as sign of appreciation of post .. it uses Lightning nerwork (super dast near to zero micro payments transfer layer on Bitcoin network)

  • Privacy is toast anyway so I yoloed and signed up

  • This forum, SoundCloud, and Bandcamp are my social media. Anything else? A big Gallic shrug. @Gavinski , the EU ban is because they won’t undertake to prevent user data being handled illegally under EU privacy law:

“The release of Threads in the European Union was postponed amid regulatory uncertainty about how the app will use personal data. This is because of the E.U.’s Digital Markets Act, which includes provisions for sharing user data across multiple platforms. Meta must await approval from the European Commission, the E.U.’s executive arm, before it can launch Threads in E.U. countries.

According to the app’s own data privacy disclosure, Threads can collect information about a user’s health, finance, contacts, search history, location, and other sensitive information via their digital activity. The app can also forward data to third parties about a user’s sexual orientation, religious and political beliefs, race and ethnicity, body, and employment status.” - https://time.com/6292586/privacy-concerns-threads-meta/

Obviously in the Land Of The Free* ( *free for corporations, free from legal protections for everyone else), this trivial little detail is of no interest.

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain, peeps!

For what dies Musk deserve this?
Be bought that shit-hole and opened the Twitter Files, which was the best thing in the last 10 or 20 years!
This brought lots of cases to court and finally resulted in laws like this:

    https://www.theepochtimes.com/judge-delivers-major-blow-to-biden-admin-in-social-media-censorship-case_5373891.html

In Reader View of Safari, you can read the article, otherwise I could upload a PDF of it.

So, I never liked Musk before, but that changed after what he did with Twitter.

Well, I’m going to put this here in response to that Epoch Times article, but I am not going to respond to any more politics-oriented comments on this thread, as these topics are no longer allowed here

Let me explain one thing, becuse i see it is wrongly understood here.

The GDPR law in EU is HUGE pain in ass. I work for company which makes application used by personal agencies - so they literally use data of users to finds jobs for them and on other side are searching candidates for companies who hav free work positions.

I am system architect/main dev there. The amount of developement we needed to do to fully comply with GDPR law was horrible. It make some parts of our app unnecessary complex and it even caused complications with data backup which causes sometimes significant peoblems for our clients.

Worst thing - our clients wanted some set of festures which would be benefitial for both people who are searchinh jobs and companies who are sesrchinh employees. For those features we need use GPT API from OpenAI

But because of this dumb EU GDPR legislative, we can’t do that - even when users gives GDPR permission, there is no way to use his data for services hosted by servers outside of EU. So now, our clients can’t use festures which would give them advantage on market .

This law is overcomplicated and pain and i can see why Threads decided just to bypass EU to avoid to deall with another mess created by EU burraucrats

  • I’m only on Twitter in order to see how long it takes me to get kicked off.
I thought my observation last week that “Elmo Musk has had more gender-affirming surgery than most trans people”
would do the trick, but alas, I still must run rampant a while longer.

It's wildly accepted that Zuckerberg is either an Alien or an Android. 😅😉

My vote is android. That’s the human/robotics hybrid?

Yes, some "good idea" implemented totally wrong and by the wrong people without required knowledge.
    Same with "hate speech" ...

    this exactly

  • The problem with Threads is that it will be ok until it becomes monetised then it become a terrible experience just like Twitter and Instagram and the others, the pattern is truly tiring. I'd prefer more public services and truly open source alternatives which become popular.

Not a fan of either of them, but Musk is more of a narcissist so it is good to see him sweating, anyone who does that will increase their popularity so Zuckerberg has more to gain as they go head to head.

i have great experience with instsgram and had very good experience wirh twitter until recently musk completely fucked it up .. somi believe Threads will not be that bsd cause there is no Musk involved 😂

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, which is very different. He’s trained with some guys who know their stuff, so if he can take Musk down the the ground he’s highly likely to win on submission.

My money would be on Zuckerberg, as BJJ is all about smaller guys taking bigger guys down.
